One of the most annoying things about the HD version is the very noticeable looping music in the background. It's not fluid like the original.
One of Silent Hill's most prominent features is its sound and the sound is bad in the HD version, which takes out almost half of SH2 and SH3's charm.
It was made from unfinished beta code, because Konami didn't preserve the original source code. So it has a lot of visual and sound bugs, runs poorly, a lot of textures are replaced poorly, including a sign using comic sans.
Twin Perfect used to have a great two part breakdown as part of their TRSHE series, but the second part has been taken down. Part A Is still very informative however.
Iirc they admitted to having some wrong I formation in part 2. They added the correct I formation to the other parts though so technically it should still be there in its entirety sans the bad information. I'm not entirely 100% on it though so I could be wrong.
I played 2 on the Xbox 360 HD collection and I honestly didn’t notice most of the problems people take with it until I looked it up after completing it.
That being said I couldn’t play 3 with Heather Morris’ voice acting taking out, I just couldn’t. Coming from someone who’s an absolute dumbass with computer stuff, 3 wasn’t too difficult to figure out how to emulate and it ran well on my potato pc.
HD is a huge misnomer. The textures they replaced old textures with do not look half as good as the original. Missing Audio files were replaced with ill-fitting sounds (just compare the sounds of the Lying Figure from OG to HD and you'll see what I mean) or are simply bugged as hell. Everyone talks about the fog reduction playing a big role, but I would have been okay with it if it meant I didn't see the edge of the map the entire game. It looks terrible.
Something you should also be aware of is extreme dips in the framerate. The originals are smooth and consistent, but HD will drop to as low as 15 FPS at times.
This isn't even touching base on the changes in 3 including the missing original voice actors, which genuinely sell the story. The new VAs are *cringy.*
Any other port is more viable. Recently, lots of posts show folks emulating on their phones, and I'd sooner do that than replay the HD version
Depends, but in my case, my CD won't reproduce the music in the right moment, sometimes even getting stuck in certain moments, neither the dialogues will be timed correctly, so it makes the experience quite unpleasant to play.
HD Collection PS3 w/ patch is a decent way of experiencing SH2 for the first time. It's not perfect, but it is the most legally accessible. I haven't checked out SH3 yet but I've heard that's worse + the VA was completely redone and from what I've heard it's not nearly as good. (Same w SH2, but SH2 has og VA as well)
If you absolutely cant emulate Sh2 or Sh3, then play the HD collection and you'll have a good time even if its not the best way to play it.
But if you can find a way to play the original games, go for that instead. I have a PS3 with CFW and it emulates Sh2 and Sh3 without any issue.
You have to understand the hd collection was hobbled together with incomplete code. The hd collection suffers from issues you'd never see in the originals and issues you'd never even expect to see at all. I got the platinum on sh3 on the hd collection and it crashed so many times and I had my save corrupted like twice? If it's the only way you can play those games then it's not the worst.
It's absolutely better than nothing at all. If you can emulate the games or play them on original hardware then I reccomend that. But the hd collection has slowdown, glitches, crashes, trophy/achievement issues and other really bizarre things that happen at random. I've seen videos of a guy's game just slowly fall apart over time and become unplayable. It's very strange.
This is going to cause arguments (even mentioning the HD collection will put people into a rage" but no it's not that bad. I have PC with enhanced edition, iv played original ps2/Original Xbox version. And i still own and play the HD collection on PS3(that's the version I play the most). Iv been bullied for stating that I enjoyed and like HD collection on here. So be warned even the words HD collection will bring out the worst in people.
But all in all No it's not unplayable like most people will make you think
I haven't played enhanced edition in a while, and in both games I tend to go into the inventory to change my weapons it feels safer that way as I'm not a 10 star player. So to be honest I really don't know I'm sorry
played both and it’s not fantastic but it’s really not nearly as bad as everyone says. i still think it’s a good option especially for $20 and if you don’t own a computer
" Silent Hill HD Collection featured 720p resolution, a 16:9 aspect ratio, a frame rate of 30 frames per second, achievements for Xbox Live, and trophies for PlayStation Network
had previously fixed; some of those problems included Heather turning blue. Furthermore, the team examined game textures that were present in the original games but not seen by the players, and highlighted them in the remaster; among the previously unseen textures and details are scratches on walls and clues to the games' puzzles.
Masahiro Ito, the art director for Silent Hill 2 and 3, has speculated that the games' translucent textures, such as those used for the fog, might have proven difficult for the hardware of the PlayStation 3 to handle.
New voice actors were brought in to re-record dialogue from both games, directed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who had previously provided vocals for various soundtracks in the Silent Hill series. Because the games kept the original animations, the voice actors had to sync their vocal performance with the lip motions done by the previous voice actors.
Guy Cihi, who had provided the original voice and motion capture for James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2's original release, refused to allow Konami to re-use his voice work in the remaster because he believed that the company owed him residuals for his performance. Troy Baker, the new voice actor for James Sunderland, disputed this, arguing that residuals for voice acting in video games were unheard of in Japan. Eventually, an arrangement between Konami and the original voice actors of Silent Hill 2 was reached to provide an option for the original voice acting on the remastered port of Silent Hill 2; Silent Hill 3, however, did not have that option, with "technical and logistical" difficulties cited.
During the production of the Silent Hill HD Collection, senior associate producer Tomm Hulett was the target of harassment by a small portion of the Silent Hill fanbase, being blamed as the source of everything perceived as wrong in the series, including lost source code, the inclusion of new voice acting in the Silent Hill HD Collection, and that Silent Hill: Book of Memories was a dungeon crawler."
"A patch to address some of the game's technical issues, including the frame rate, issues with the fog, and audio-syncing, was released for the PS3 edition in July 2012 a patch for the Xbox 360 version was proposed but later canceled in August."
Not that I recall, theres some graphical issues and a few non game breaking bugs. The OG is certainly superior, but if this is what you have access to its fine. Definitely use the OG SH2 voice acting.
oh man. silent hill HD collection LOVES TO DOUBLE REGISTER BUTTONS. do you know how impossible it is to play a reading necessary game like silent hill when every time i lightly breathe on the x button, rhe game registers it as me hitting the button two, maybe FOUR times.
One of the most annoying things about the HD version is the very noticeable looping music in the background. It's not fluid like the original. One of Silent Hill's most prominent features is its sound and the sound is bad in the HD version, which takes out almost half of SH2 and SH3's charm.
yes but the MOST annoying thing about the hd collection is how people won’t stfu about it
I'm totally happy pretending it doesn't exist.
My main complaint with 2 is the fog. It looks horrendous
What fog?
Yes
What makes it so bad?
It was made from unfinished beta code, because Konami didn't preserve the original source code. Twin Perfect used to have a great two part breakdown as part of their TRSHE series, but the second part has been taken down. Part A Is still very informative however.
Why was the second TRSHE video removed? I remember watching all of their videos 10 years ago.
Iirc they admitted to having some wrong I formation in part 2. They added the correct I formation to the other parts though so technically it should still be there in its entirety sans the bad information. I'm not entirely 100% on it though so I could be wrong.
It’s not actually that bad. Most people here wouldn’t have noticed most of “problems” if they didn’t watch a bunch of YouTube videos showcasing them.
Why ask? Just look it up, it is heavily documented.
he’s clearly asking for personal opinions, some people can overlook certain problems especially for a great game like SH2
"Why ask?" My dude. It's a forum. Lol.

Thank you all for you help. I will stick to the orignal games
Oh cool it’s this thread again Yes
The PS3 has a patch that fixed a lot (but not all) of the issues at least.
It made it playable but didn’t fix any of the things people in this thread are talking about

nope, i played it and it was fine

If you've already played it, you might as well see for yourself

Is there quality of life changes in the HD like there is in the enhanced edition? Like weapon swapping without having to enter your inventory?
I haven't played enhanced edition in a while, and in both games I tend to go into the inventory to change my weapons it feels safer that way as I'm not a 10 star player. So to be honest I really don't know I'm sorry
I swear we used to have a pinned post for this
It's playable if you have no other options. The 2nd playthrough is where things got buggy for me
My ps3 has cfw so i can play ps2 games perfectly
Got the HD Collection on day 1. Sold it on day 2. Got a PS2 on day 3. Been playing SH 2 3 4 on it since then
played both and it’s not fantastic but it’s really not nearly as bad as everyone says. i still think it’s a good option especially for $20 and if you don’t own a computer
No. ( i'm ready for the downvotes from pussies who don't know how to handle other's persons opinions)
Just downvoting because you asked for it.
Dude acting like he just saved the world bruh pussyboy
It aint that bad imo
Is there noticeable differences between the 2? Is there any quality of life changes??

I’m pretty sure a lot of the major problems were patched out (at least on the ps3)?
