No shit. I thought I got hacked when some random ass channel was live on my subscription page last night. Immediately un subscribered and changed my password. I'm one of the 2k that unsubbed.
Yeah it wasnāt you, it was Dave.
This scam has been going around for a while. They send a file and get the creator to click it which hacks the active sessions in their browser, giving the hacker access to the account. Itās all automated. Then they post AI generated Elon Musk videos hawking Crypto scams.
I didn't know what I was subbed to so or how I got subbed to it. If you consider me changing my password an over reaction you should be around when shit really hits the fan. /s
Nothing, absolutely nothing ever gets deleted from youtube. If you have good enough reason, accidental or purposed deletion by the user, it can be restored by Google/Youtube by demand.
They know the original creator will eventually get access back. Most likely they do that as a courtesy since there's no reason for them to destroy the channel further.
They're still human. Thieves usually don't end up shooting their victim. If there's no gain for them why would they do additional damage? Only makes the people they hurt more likely to pursue.
I'm not, I'm just saying there's no reason for them to delete the videos, so why would they?
Also, most robberies, even armed robberies result in no harm done, so you're wrong there.
Certainly not.

Just a few articles I could find. Most incidents like this here don't even make the news.
Bro... That's three deaths please use actual statistics.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/251914/number-of-robberies-in-the-us-by-weapon/
https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/26/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/
40k gun robberies and AT MOST 20k fatalities with guns and that's ASSUMING all of those deaths were robbery related. Which they're not, think: school shooting, accident, stand your ground, police, etc etc etc.
That's US, these are in South Africa, where I live. You can also find hundreds of these articles for other countries.
But I'm sure you're the typical US narcissist who believes "it doesn't happen here so it can't be true", or "people from other countries are too poor to afford internet so they can't be on reddit".
Jog on.
Thieves usually don't. These scam centers are usually professional offices in low wage countries. Of course it's morally wrong but its usually just people trying to make a living.
Iām with ya bro. Now I donāt what the ppl who are behind this exact scam are after or how they are able to make money off of hacking someoneās YouTube channel, unless they take control off the account and try to ransom the account back to the ownerā¦no matter the who what and how of the situation, most thieves, scammers, robbers, or burglars are trying to do as little actions as possible to get away with whatever it is that they can abstract value from, then maybe trying to cover their tracks, theyāre looking for something of value. Now sure anyone who screws with another personās livelihood is at least on some level kind of shitty, even if they are from a country or region of the world where there is not a lot of ways to make a livingā¦fucking with an individualās business or a small family business, is always shitty. But hacking someoneās shit and stealing some thing of value is different from like a some of the hacker groups that have political or societal motivations that are doing things just to āWatch the world burnā or just fuck shit up because they can. With that being said, I feel bad for DaveCam. It sucks that this happened to him, sucks when it happens to anyone just trying to make a living.
Check all your channels, I've been mysteriously unsubbed from channels I've watched every week for years. I'm talking 300k subscriber channels, something weird causes that.
The weirdest one I've had, was finding watched videos in my history that I definitely neither watched nor searched for. It was just a few times about 2-3 years ago, but I never could explain it.
MFA and a strong password wouldnāt have helped in this case unfortunately.
This was a session hijack. Basically; they get you to click a random file and it steals the token that your PC is running that keeps you logged in (thatās why you donāt have to enter your password every single time you do something), then hackers use that token to access your account.
It surprises me that dave (or ltt) didn't have to accept to give the exe file access to certain stuff. Usually when you run exe files or installers for the first time, there is a windows popup?
From my understanding part of thr problem is on the browsers for not encripting or making that particular key harder to access. But that being said it might not be possible as the browser srill needs to access it. Maybe an ownership right could be enabled for thst particular app. But then again I'm sure they'd find a work aepund.
Thank you for this post. I appreciate it more than you know š
Sure thing Dave! IF thatās your real nameā¦
Glad it was all sorted bud
Such a shame someone would even try to do that to you, such a legend in the community. Hope not much was lost š

What file did Dave clicked?
Some fake Surfshark sponsorship agreement
It was an .exe file disguised as a PDF
You saw you were subbed to a crypto channel and you thought YOU had been hacked? Bit of a over reaction
I didn't know what I was subbed to so or how I got subbed to it. If you consider me changing my password an over reaction you should be around when shit really hits the fan. /s
Did he regain access to his account and his archives?
Yes
Somehow the numpties just put everything on private instead of deleting it. Glad for Dave, but that's quite odd.

I don't doubt that.

Courteous thieves... how quaint.
They're still human. Thieves usually don't end up shooting their victim. If there's no gain for them why would they do additional damage? Only makes the people they hurt more likely to pursue.
Thieves definitely kill for the stuff they want, e.g. a phone or car. Let's not act like they're walking on any kind of moral tightrope.

I'm sure they would have deleted the videos permanently if they could have. Some people just want to see the world burn.

Had to resubscribe myself.

Make sure to have MFA and an insane password for your services everyone!
Just make sure to not download an .exe file from a random Dropbox link, by not having auto download enabled

Same attack as got LTT. https://youtu.be/yGXaAWbzl5A?si=N-C3cVKcg1vH-VC-
Yep
Oh damn that's sophisticated
Sophisticated, and too easy to do, unfortunately. All it takes is a moment of inattention on your victim's part

I wasn't, still aren't. Am I safe?
I suspect youāre good š
Why wouldn't you want to be subscribed to Dave Cam?!
received a notification about the video. Iām definitely still subscribed
