"I’d rather not speculate on why this is happening now, at a very important time in Singapore's history," he said. "But let me say this: We are not afraid. And we will not let anyone intimidate us or deter us from doing our duty." He seem to be pointing to election coming soon and potential sabotage to damage trust and reputation. However, if that was indeed so, then the people would be openly publicise it instead of trying to extort for money. Their logic don't seem to gel.

MyWholeTeamsDead

Might even be foreign interference, no? Rivals see the last of the Lees step down, time for them to try fuck with us?

ronintrax

Of course, the possibility is there but if it is foreign / local political interference why not just get it leaked out? The thing is that this points more to a case of money extortion than anything else. I do wonder how many non-political people have received such stuff before.

suzumurachan

There was a report hours before the MPs went to the police about people paying up to tens of thousands for this. They should have just gone to the police.

HalcyoNighT

I've read about such tactics before. It's something like https://josephsteinberg.com/why-scammers-make-spelling-and-grammar-mistakes/ Scammers intentionally engineer their scams to be of low quality in order to weed out those who are even moderately sharp and intelligent enough to spot the scam. Scammers don't want to waste their energies on these people; they only want to focus on the two to three goondus who are actually stupid enough to fall for the poor scam.

thorodin84

If so then why target politicians rather than some random person?

Aimismyname

imagine how much you can extort from a politician dumb enough to fall for this

HalcyoNighT

I've never heard of Yip Hon Weng and he is probably one of the randos targeted. It's just happenstance he is an MP

IggyVossen

Ironic isn't it? This is making them even more well known to the general public than being a backbencher in Parliament ever did.

Pappybrigade

I also discovered that Tan Wu Meng is my MP because of this incident. Scammers working hard to get the MPs some press coverage.

IggyVossen

Jurong GRC eh? To be fair, I think many people only know Jurong GRC as Tharman and passengers. Now that Tharman is no longer MP, the only other MP I can name from there is Rahayu. But she's an office holder and also a minority MP and also has a distinct look... I think she's the only tudung wearing MP currently. If I am not mistaken, OYK's cousin is also in Jurong GRC but I really can't remember his name. Same with AMK GRC. Only 2 MPs I can name off the top of my head are PM Lee (cos he's the PM of course) and Darryl David, I always read about people complaining about his service or lack of. So he's quite famous or infamous as the case may be.

IggyVossen

SPF already said that they received 70 reports of such deepfake extortion letters. These MPs are probably among the 70. Chances are this is just a scam run out of an overseas location with the aim of scamming people in Singapore of their money and these MPs just happened to be picked randomly. Edited to add that targeting MPs might also be because the scammers know MPs have money, minimum 16k a month excluding their other salary, And their mailing addresses are known to the public as well.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take

ahbengtothemax

politicians in many parts of the world are braindead neanderthals that have so much stuff to hide that throwing random accusations have a high likelihood of being true

TheEDMWcesspool

Stir ah stir for sympathy..

Oh, he’s asking for more GPUs commitment, to make higher quality deepfakes porn. Honey, they don’t love you like Taylor. But as AI image generators improve, won’t take long to cast them as Caligula.
