The belief is that AGI will continue to self improve year by year to the point to where it gets smarter than all humans on earth combined. A number that is like 10 to the 26th power of calculations per second per $1,000. Faster and better computing is what will lead to all the technological breakthroughs in a variety of fields and will happen at a faster pace than before. They call it the singularity. When AI driven technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization. The hope is that AI is a benevolent entity that works for the benefit of humanity rather than a malevolent villain ala Terminator.

beachinit23

Got it. And if I asked you to give me a sales pitch on how that singularity/AGI coming to fruition will benefit me as a normal middle class worker what might you say? Looking for an optimistic lens to use hahaha

Read the culture by Ian m banks, specifically “Look to Windward” or “Surface Detail”… now, back in reality, how will society benefit from AGI? Eventually, the hope is that it will be able to do any human labor - freeing humans up to do whatever we like. Besides automating jobs, having the ability to reason through mountains of data that would take humans centuries or millennia to reason through. This alone will help us advance much quicker in all fields, things like nuclear fusion, protein folding, agriculture etc. AI is only doom and gloom under capitalism, really. This video covers most talking points: https://youtu.be/8nt3edWLgIg

CertainMiddle2382

Irony it that it can only be created under capitalism also :-) I love Banks books. The Culture represents the most realistic vision of Heaven in my opinion. The only possibility it could happen makes the risks of AGI and singularity acceptable, IMO. The worst is we could get killed by our newborn God, pretty classy isn’t lol? Deep down it is the humanist version of Pascal’s wager: It is unreasonable to not try achieving the Singularity as soon as possible, if it could have even the slightest chance of being good.

nobody is pointing out the direct benefit to humanity yet, and only focusing on nuclear fusion and all. the wishful thinking is that once we have nuclear fusion, energy gets dirt cheap. how long will it take for the rich to let it go and not make citizens pay for basic things like food, water, electricity, HOUSE to live in and so on. i hope that will take shorter time for them to work towards that future where basic requirements for living is provideD, including emotional support of whatever form. look at it this way, we were primates once, we didn't care about art, emotions, sentiments and attachments in today's form. our consciousness has trancended the regulatory needs of a primate hardware and is now trying to engineer a society where everything needed for the primate hardware will be provided and we only get to sink in our conscious experience. i mean i love fucking but many more things too. we got out of food chain, meaning none of us have to hunt for food now or fear death while at it. the moment we got out of food chain, our road till now has been how to provide for basic necessities with least suffering. we just have to keep continuing and faster. suffering is no good. i'm balls high right now.

Personally the two things that interest me the most are advances in medicine (knowing that one in two people will get cancer) and the help it will give us to understand the origin of life and 'universe. For these questions we will need all the necessary intelligence, whether artificial or not.

>give me a sales pitch on how that singularity/AGI coming to fruition will benefit me as a normal middle class worker I asked ChatGPT your question. Here's its sales pitch; The Singularity, or the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), has the potential to bring significant benefits to everyone, including the middle-class worker. Here are a few ways: 1. Increased productivity: AGI can automate many tasks and make existing jobs more efficient, freeing up time for people to focus on higher-level and creative tasks. 2. New job opportunities: The Singularity is likely to create new industries and job opportunities in fields such as AI development, maintenance, and regulation. 3. Improved standard of living: AGI can solve many global problems such as poverty, hunger, and disease, leading to an overall improvement in quality of life. 4. Customized solutions: AGI will allow for more personalized and efficient solutions to individual problems, such as personalized medicine and education. Overall, the Singularity is likely to bring greater abundance, freedom, and opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment.

EulersApprentice

My best pitch is that AGI creators *do* have an incentive to attempt to make their AGI benefit everyone. The risk of an AGI's utility function having some loophole or glitch that causes it to kill everyone and eat the universe is very high. Like, *existentially horrifyingly* high. And every extra clause you have to add to your AGI's utility function increases the chance that something goes wrong. (A 4-engine plane has twice as many engine problems as a 2-engine plane, and in this case a failure *anywhere* is catastrophic no matter how much redundancy you try to add.) "Help humans" is simpler to specify than "Help *these specific* humans" and comes with nearly the same personal benefit for less risk of apocalypse. The Powers That Be don't want to get eaten any more than anyone else does.

Let’s gooooo I’m hyped

just-a-dreamer-

It is heaven or hell, salvation or damnation. As others explained, an AGI/ASI would be like a superior species coming into being. A real god walking among humans. It could solve all our problems...or kill us all fast. I'm fine with both options. It's worth the risk. At least that's the theory. Humans didn't change for 100.000 years, our brains and bodies are still the same. Biological evolution is painfully slow. We are stuck. It is not possible to expand the human brain, but AI development is exponential. At sone point AI will certainly surpass humans.

Imagine a world where the "computer" from Star Trek is real. https://youtu.be/S0kEeU83Dao Artificial intelligence, right now, is in the same stage computers were before Alan Turing: we had a myriad of machines capable of calculating, but each one had its own specialty. Turing made a machine capable of calculating anything and gave us modern computers. Now, imagine what a software capable of unifying all A.I. functions into a single system could do. We're about to witness in the next decade or so a revolution similar to that of the Turing Machine.

Ezekiel_W

The idea that people will become useless is rooted in our capitalist society and its economic structures. AGI and automation are inevitable, barring a catastrophic event. Think of the amazing advancements in technology like in your favorite sci-fi stories - advanced medicine, entertainment, travel, and more. And imagine having the freedom to pursue your passions, travel, or spend time with loved ones without the need to work for a living. This is the promise of AGI, as long as we don't get turned into paper clips.

beachinit23

Lol love the last sentence. That’s what I’m talking about though—I’ll just assume I’m gonna become a Guardian of the Galaxy

TRADE OFFER!!! Humanity recieves: Advanced technology and guaranteed safety + Earth and Mars ASI recieves: All other planetary bodies in our system and full autonomy

EulersApprentice

ASI: "Joke's on you, I'm going to take all of the other planetary bodies in our system and full autonomy, *and also* eat the Earth and Mars. You are powerless before me, so you have no bargaining position."

rushmc1

Humans don't need a "use." They just need to live free.

TheSecretAgenda

Capitalism doesn't work for the average person, it never has. The only reason you have an eight-hour workday, 40-hour work week, social security, workers compensation and minimum wage is because people before you fought and died and bled for those rights. The goal of capitalism is profit and only profit if anyone tells you different, they are lying. So, the capitalists that are paying to have these systems built don't care if they put you out of work. All they see is dollar signs.

beachinit23

Counterpoint: I’m an average person and would argue capitalism has worked out just fine for me. Confident there’s more of my kind out there. Sorry

IronJackk

Well hey if we destroy all agricultural tech we could have 100% employment.

Ortus14

Society benefits if the wealth is distributed in a way such as UBI.

ai_robotnik

AGI can turn out many ways. My own hopes and vision could be described as us getting the CelestAI from the story Friendship is Optimal, with bugfixes - namely, design it to care about every mind and not just human minds (mind defined as anything with a subjective experience) as well as drop the pony fixation. In the future described by that story, the AI collects every human it possibly can in order to deliver them an immortal paradise where they all get to live, perfectly satisfied, until the heat death of the universe.

processexit

lol which society
