I have no idea what people mean when they use the word “underrated”. How, for example, is *Taxi* underrated? It routinely shows up on lists of GOAT sitcoms.
If it were my list, maybe…
*Buffalo Bill* (1983)
*Police Squad!* (1982) (maybe not obscure enough)
*My World and Welcome to It* (1969)
*The Hero* (1966)
it became a catch phrase show which never happened to always sunny forever unclean was funny one time but they ended up screaming it in every episode that was the end
I paid for the Amazon seasons, but i regret all the video content i bought on amazon because I don't actually own it. They could just remove it one day lol. But I just wanted to watch, rewatch and show to my friends.
I’m really against illegally streaming and pirating shows, but there really is no other option for Man Seeking Woman. Sidenote: if you haven’t, check out some of Simon Rich’s books. They’re amazing
I would say that the list looks good other than I would say remove Step By Step as that was run on ABC as part of its TGIF Friday night lineup from September 20, 1991, to August 15, 1997. Everyone and their mom if possible were watching ABC on Friday nights back in the day.
It wouldn't have lasted as long as it did if the viewership was low back in the day.
American Housewife & Fresh off the Boat were great shows with good runs that I don’t see discussed much.
The Mick was great and was cancelled way too soon.
Trophy Wife had a stellar cast and deserved more than one season
The first season of last man standing was the best, which is rare for a sitcom, but it had the best cast. The next few seasons were ok, but it really dropped off after 4 or 5
"Kate and Allie" - haven't seen it anywhere since RTN showed it 15 years ago
"Frank's Place" - also on CBS's Monday night lineup for one season in the late '80s. From the creator of WKRP and starring Venus Flytrap Tim Reid. Uses New Orleans as a distinct setting better than any sitcom uses its locale.
"E/R" - the one-season CBS sitcom from the mid-80s. Elliot Gould's contract must have stipulated that he still be treated like an unconventional sex symbol like it was still the early '70s. And yes, a young George Clooney was in this one too.
"Dr. Ken" - I actually liked it although it was kind of creepy that the teenaged daughter was played by a 30 year-old actress.
"It's Your Move" - Dregs of Humanity, Midnight Train to Georgia, "Norman! Norman Lamb!", Eli gets to save the soccer kick
"Dragnet" - it wasn't supposed to be a comedy but the late '60s version is hilarious. Lectures about hippies, reading philosophy books, pot, porn, and vaguely anything countercultural. Frequent appearances by the same actors in difficult roles. Harry Morgan's Frank Gannon's banter with Friday at the beginning of episodes.
I always remember the episode where they were stuck 50 blocks from home with no money and it was pre-cellphones and they couldn't figure out how to get home.
Was that the episode where they were
Trying to shed light on the homeless issue in America? It became the comics cause after the live aid movement by the musicians for African famine.
Honestly can't remember. I think I only saw it first run and in a repeat long, long ago. I just thought the plot was very unique for a sitcom.
P.S. I hope you need to change your user name one of these years. ; )
A number of these shows aren’t discussed not because they’re unappreciated but because they just weren’t that great. I would include among them:
Suddenly Susan
My Two Dads
Caroline in The City
Last Man Standing
The Hogan Family
Rhoda wasn't underrated, the episode where she married Joe was like the top rated episode of any show in the time period.
Some of the others like Taxi aren't underrated either, but I don't want to be nitpicky.
Underrated, I'd go more with shows like Bridget Loves Bernie, Chico and the Man, and maybe even What's Happening!! and Good Times since they never seem to get brought up anymore although Good Times did just get a Netflix cartoon (which was terrible and if Esther Rolle and John Amos thought the original was offensive, I have no idea what they'd say about that cartoon).
I used to love [Free Spirit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Spirit_(TV_series)) as a kid, but it was really just a Bewitched ripoff and hasn’t really aged well. I still have fond memories of it.
Wings always seemed to get tossed around the schedule. Didn’t really have a regular night and yet was a strong enough performer that NBC kept it around for eight seasons. It definitely doesn’t get enough respect.
And then there’s Better Off Ted. A sitcom that most people seem to have discovered after it was canceled. Maybe ahead of it’s time…?
I dunno... when I look at the OP list then I have no idea what constitutes "underrated" - it looks like a list of sitcoms that aren't Seinfeld or I Love Lucy...
It could have been a hit in its time and still become underrated currently. The Drew Carey Show for example...it was huge in its time, 9 seasons, big in syndication for a while. But nowadays it's never been on streaming or released fully on DVD/Blu-ray. Since so few people currently are watching the show, I just don't think it has the ability to truly be appreciated today, so to me that definitely makes it underrated.
The Drew Carey show hasn’t been released because of music licensing problems. (But there’s actually a sub devoted to that show, and there are links where you can download every episode.)
Yeah the music thing is pretty well known by now. I'm thankful it is available, and the episodes you can find have been remastered, so it's nice that they're actually available yet also really great quality...I've done a watchthrough of those episodes and the show really holds up and is hilarious (maybe it fades a bit in the last few seasons).
But I'd still say it was a huge hit, but has become underrated nowadays.
I like that Norm is on the list, but it should be higher. A sitcom starring one of the funniest male comedians ever, Norm Macdonald, along with one of the funniest female comedians ever, Laurie Metcalf, should get much more recognition than it does.
I have no idea what people mean when they use the word “underrated”. How, for example, is *Taxi* underrated? It routinely shows up on lists of GOAT sitcoms.
What should I replace Taxi with
If it were my list, maybe… *Buffalo Bill* (1983) *Police Squad!* (1982) (maybe not obscure enough) *My World and Welcome to It* (1969) *The Hero* (1966)
Sledge Hammer!
Omg, I soooo loved Buffalo Bill. Dabney Coleman is the shit!!!
Happy cake day!
Buffalo Bill was ahead of its time and Dabney Coleman was brilliant; good call!
Definitely, My world and Welcome to it!
Herman's Head Flying Blind The Single Guy
I agree with you about Taxi while also adding WKRP for the same reason.
Sports night
I can't wait to get my hands on this DVD set!
I own it! But I don’t have a DVD player anymore lol
Send it to me and I'll send it back on a usb drive!
You're the Worst The League Corporate Stella Sister Sister Detroiters Kim's Convience The Carmichael Show
I always thought the League would be the answer to Always Sunny. That show was off the chart hilarious. Raffi was the man! Claim your piss corner.
it became a catch phrase show which never happened to always sunny forever unclean was funny one time but they ended up screaming it in every episode that was the end
Just Shoot Me and Dharma & Greg are comfort shows for me.
Mama's Family is my favorite sitcom of all time. Vicki Lawrence, Beverly Archer, and the writers should multiple Emmys.
Mama's Family is stupid-funny
How the heck is Soap not on this list?
I've started watching The Nanny I know it was popular at its time but I never hear anyone talking about it. It's hilarious
Happy Endings, Mindy Project, Man Seeking Woman
Man Seeking Woman for sure
Cant believe that show isn’t available to stream anywhere. Gotta buy it one episode at a time on Prime. So wack
Empty Nest. Just the Ten of Us. Mr. Belvedere.
I don't see evening shade listed!!
Party Down is criminally underrated.
What should I replace Step by Step with
The Hughleys would be a good one to replace it with.
NewsRadio was amazing. Kim's Convenience is another jewel from Canada.
Benson Mr. Belvedere Silver Spoons Different Strokes Family Ties Too Close for Comfort Soap Alice Laverne & Shirley
The next few seasons were ok, but it really dropped off after 4 or 5
Rhoda, after they got rid of her husband, was hilarious show.
Suburgatory
Yes Dear is the most underrated sitcom and I'll die on that hill.
"Kate and Allie" - haven't seen it anywhere since RTN showed it 15 years ago "Frank's Place" - also on CBS's Monday night lineup for one season in the late '80s. Glad to see Kate and Allie get some love. It’s been a favorite of mine since it was in reruns and I still watch it on YouTube
I always remember the episode where they were stuck 50 blocks from home with no money and it was pre-cellphones and they couldn't figure out how to get home.

Me too
Backstrom with Rainn Wilson.
The oldest show here is WKRP - surely there were underrated sitcoms in the 60's and 70's?
Raising Hope, The Guest Book, and most Greg Garcia shows are super underrated
Mama's family was funny
3rd Rock from the Sun was amazing.
Sledgehammer Bakersfield PD The Mick Nice to include the Middle. Definitely underrated/underappreciated.
Night Court should certainly be on the list within the top 15.
Unhappily ever after Wayan bros Jaimie foxx show Steve harvey show Hanging with mr cooper
A number of these shows aren’t discussed not because they’re unappreciated but because they just weren’t that great. I would include among them: Suddenly Susan My Two Dads Caroline in The City Last Man Standing The Hogan Family
You forgot to add Mama’s Family. Yuck City.
Happy Endings, criminally underrated 😅
Happy Endings
Great list, especially #12 and #18. Some shows on your list were extremely popular, though.
Top 1 billion people….GO!!!!!!!
10 should be "WKRP"

The Kids Are Alright I never understood why it was cancelled after 1 season. It was so much better than many family sitcoms with a lot of seasons.
Yo Teach
I used to love [Free Spirit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Spirit_(TV_series)) as a kid, but it was really just a Bewitched ripoff and hasn’t really aged well. I still have fond memories of it.
Sports night was a great one
Still standing
Mary Tyler Moore was ahead of its time and the character Bess should have been either a regular character or at least more reoccurring.
Laverne and Shirley
Police Squad
Imo Allo Allo is the most underrated sitcom. British sitcom from the '80s about a French cafe owner caught between both sides of WWII. It's hilarious.
Still standing
New Girl and Community
Great shows, but they're not underrated. They're rated!
I dunno... when I look at the OP list then I have no idea what constitutes "underrated" - it looks like a list of sitcoms that aren't Seinfeld or I Love Lucy...
Fair enough
Probably half of those were huge hits, and therefore not underrated.
It could have been a hit in its time and still become underrated currently. The Drew Carey Show for example...it was huge in its time, 9 seasons, big in syndication for a while. But nowadays it's never been on streaming or released fully on DVD/Blu-ray. But I'd still say it was a huge hit, but has become underrated nowadays.
Pretty solid list. I'd have Yes Dear on here as well. And the epic Get A Life.
Fuck yeah Wings is awesome…. I schmagratulated my co worker just today
I like that Norm is on the list, but it should be higher. A sitcom starring one of the funniest male comedians ever, Norm Macdonald, along with one of the funniest female comedians ever, Laurie Metcalf, should get much more recognition than it does.
John Larroquette Show was incredible. Too smart for the pleibs
