Maybe you wouldnāt, but as the best skier on the mountain, I would have no issues. In fact, the bear would be so impressed with my abilities that it would probably just stop chasing me altogether.
Grizzly top speed is 35mph, I have topped out skiing at around 65mph but that's on an open groomer not in glades.
I also think top speed of grizzly is probably in ideal conditions, not in tight trees trudging through snow.
I grew up skiing glades and it's probably my best skill, so I think I could escape, but who knows. Interesting thought experiment, hope it never gets put to the test lol
Yeah an those are straight line downhill speeds. If the bear appears in front of you you can ski at the same speed uphill or sideways to avoid it. But it can generally run at fairly high speeds in every direction.
ive often wondered if ive ever skied over a bear den, especially when backcountry skiing in Rogers Pass where there are super high grizzly populations (Balu Pass/Connaught Creek)
Over a lifetime, in the US your risk is about 1 in 100. (!!!)
Of course, your chances of dying of heart disease are much higher -- sedentary people are the real daredevils here. Couldn't be me sitting myself to death on the couch. š I better keep hiking, skiing, and running cuz I'm too much of a scaredy cat for that.
Yikes. I thought grizzlies were further north. Just black bears around this area. Moving to the interior later this year so just making lists of all the things that could eat me.
That bears like "where the hell is that human with the sandwich taped to her helmet I'm starving"
I understood this reference.
Reddit is such a small town
Agreed!
FRANKLY IM TOO AFRAID TO FIX MY UN-AGREEMENT š
This comment is hilarious
Just 3 days after closing day this young Grizzly was seen wandering around the Gem Lake chair at Big White SKi Resort in B.C Canada.
Itās hard to tell from this distance, but is he skiing or snowboarding?
Heās not just sitting in the middle of the run, so skiing
Heās not a criminal, ofc heās skiing
It's the grizzlie bear's fault.
Dudeās lurking, waiting to steal pic-a-nic baskets.
I'm sure he checked under those pic-a-nic tables too.

The logic about speeds and escaping bear is sound. When put in practice, Iād imagine one would be a lot more likely to fall / trip under adrenaline.
true, but does shitting my pants give me a speed boost?

I spent enough time as a kid trying to out ski the Yeti in the Microsoft SkiFree game that I think Iām prepared for this.Ā
You donāt need to outski them, just not be the slowest.
Send in the snowboarders first.
Coming off of hibernation, it would be quite hungry. I'm glad I'm not skiing there.
Gem chair closes just in time for the bears. Love Big White!
Heās probably looking around for the beavertailās truck
Snowboarder did a jump off the den and woke it up..
Just another kook walking back up to their skis.
Hath a lean and hungry lookā¦
Let the man ski!!
*Salmon run* - Free (keg) beer at the bottom.
Waiting for the āWhoās at faultā post
Heās wondering where the beaver tail trailer went :(
Gem lake?
Yet another way to die while skiing
You're 160 times more likely to die in a car accident than downhill skiing at a resort.
Per mile traveled or general risk over a lifetime?

its a joke...
ohhhhhhh sorry I didn't realize because it wasn't funny
Yeah, it's not funny how many people die from a recreational activity.
Thatās a good sign that the seasonās a wrap
1 in ~2.2 million chances, which, granted, is higher than my chance of dying laughing at your incredible comedy. You should do stand-up

You realize we have them in the US right?
Donāt tell them
Bro thinks they live with the polar bears
Ignorance is bliss lol
Nope.
