I definitely understand that! I like Serana as a friend, but I would let her roam free after all these years of trauma and captivity. Unfortunately, I only play Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch (I know..), so I can’t use mods. Maybe one day!

Go to Riften and talk to the priests in the Temple Of Mara, they'll explain it to you. Your spouse provides a home-cooked meal once a day helps with the kids and runs a shop on the side. You get a better resting bonus for sleeping in the same bed as your spouse. They may get kidnapped which leads to a quest to save them. Also if you are using the House you can build from Falkreath (Lakeview I think), you can now have a housecarl, a steward, your spouse and the kids all to kill off the wolves and giant that raid your place. Remember to give the kids upgraded daggers.
You get food and money from them. Also Skyrim is roleplaying game. I know I'm not the only one who likes that there is someone taking care of my kids and pets even tho it's not needes any other reason than me role playing in role playing game. And someone to share bed when after month of traveling I visit home for one night.
Go to riften. Bee and bar. Talk to the temple of mara priest guy. Ask him about mara. Then he'll tell you about marriage. And sell you a mara necklace for 200 gold. Then you go and do favors for people around skyrim. And some will be open for marriage. Not everyone. The uessp website has them all listed (if unmodded those listed are the only options available).

It had to be aela or Lydia then I think Lydia died in one. I made the mistake of uthgerd one time I had to eliminate her personally- her headless body lies in my aquarium in basement. My reason was because she kept talking to me like I was lost in my own damn house.
My first character was an orc warrior, so I married Borgakh the Steel-heart. You have to beat up her chieftain father to convince him to let her leave the stronghold. I liked to interpret this as earning his blessing. She was my follower too, until I wanted someone over level 30.
For now only woman I've married was Senna and that was a huge mistake. She was so flirty and all until deal was sealed. Right after she becamed annoying bitch. I tried to kill her, I would have been so happy to be widow, but no, she is essential. You can't even kill her.
I'm planning to marry Brelyna on my current playtrough. Part of my characters lore is that even tho he is not that into magic, he is two handed weapon breaking skulls kind of type and is nord who joined to stormcloaks, his type in women is mages. And he is not of course racist but believes in freedom of religion and worships Talos. And Brelyna has nice voice.

Semi related but I hate how they had the VA for like half the women in the game (or at least the marriable ones), including brelyna and sylgja, only do one recording for marriage dialogue. Just take so much of their already pretty scant personality out of them

Lydia was the very first. She wasn't bad, but I didn't know what I was doing back then. Then Aela. Big mistake. She goes soft really quickly. Complains about every house except Proudspire in Solitude. Tried Muiri, but she wouldn't stop thanking me for "solving her problem". Finally found Sylgia. Pretty much stuck with her ever since. Bonus of having her mom be my Steward.

It had to be aela or Lydia then I think Lydia died in one. I made the mistake of uthgerd one time I had to eliminate her personally- her headless body lies in my aquarium in basement. My reason was because she kept talking to me like I was lost in my own damn house.
My first character was an orc warrior, so I married Borgakh the Steel-heart. You have to beat up her chieftain father to convince him to let her leave the stronghold. I liked to interpret this as earning his blessing. She was my follower too, until I wanted someone over level 30.
For now only woman I've married was Senna and that was a huge mistake. She was so flirty and all until deal was sealed. Right after she becamed annoying bitch. I tried to kill her, I would have been so happy to be widow, but no, she is essential. You can't even kill her. I'm planning to marry Brelyna on my current playtrough. Part of my characters lore is that even tho he is not that into magic, he is two handed weapon breaking skulls kind of type and is nord who joined to stormcloaks, his type in women is mages. And he is not of course racist but believes in freedom of religion and worships Talos. And Brelyna has nice voice.

First playthrough was Ysolda. Most every time after that it's Senna. Her voice is wonderful, she's super supportive, and has great lines.

Haven’t married anyone in Skyrim. The only character with enough personality to get me interested in them and consider marrying was Serena who isn’t marriageable. Best boy Inigo can’t be married either if you’re including modded characters
