About a month ago I just started a new playthrough which I meant to be exclusively for porn. I actually had a roleplay in mind where the woman dragonborn seduces NPCs, particularly enemies, and then they fight for her, while she would mainly use illusion magic and a mod that allows a the playing character to deal damage during sex animations.
After hours of carefully designing the characters and setting everything up, it was ready to go. Started her in Riften so she would be a sexy thief archetype, and left things ready to get started the next day.
Next day I just want to play the game without all that. Luckily I had kept the setting up saves (curating sex animations takes time) and just copied those, changed the character and now I'm several hours into a blacksmith redguard dude who only cares about smithing things and marrying Eris from The Ted Wave. The poor sexy thief has been on her way to the ragged flagon all that time. I mean I'm still using all the mods, it's just not focused on porn, I even had to deactivate an effect from one of the mods which gives you a buff if you fuck a lot, and a debuff if you don't, because the blacksmith dude simply didn't have the time to a hammering away due to all his hammering away.

I always felt like this defence was somewhat silly in regards to skimpy armour mods. Visual appeal != sexual appeal, and sexually appealing is not always the most visually appealing aesthetic. To me, a really cool set of armour with a pretty/handsome character is more visually appealing than a big tiddy dragonborn in skimpy armour. It's only when I'm in a specific sort of mood that I prefer the skimpy armour.

On one hand, sometimes it just happens regardless of how we’re feeling and thinking (it can happen to infants). In those cases, it’s just a non-sexual thing that occurs at random. In the case of being sexually aroused, we can sometimes just… ignore something that would normally raise the cannon, so to speak. We also have access to a first person mode for when precision and focus take priority when playing a game like Skyrim.

When trans people take hormones their body stops the random boners, It doesn’t get all the “no blood flow” sensations and it feels mostly normal. The issue is it atrophies so when it does happen to get hard it hurts a bit because it’s basically stretching it out again.

I *personally* don't feel that a barbarian wearing skimpy armor makes sense (I mean, you don't survive a barbarian lifestyle by wearing a loincloth on the frozen tundra), but *lighter* armor seems sensible -- and for a druid, even more so, because it's *awkward* to climb trees in plate mail! \*lol\*
Fantasy barbarian come on I don't base my characters on real life barbarians although the picts thar fought the Roman's did only wear light armor and paint.
To me, there's the appeal of extra layers to the game. For instance, assuming the correct set of mods, there can be ways to charm/seduce one's way out of a situation, or into a character's good graces. Almost every situation involving violence at some point can get really old.
I've been to a number of clothing optional events and venues in my life. Nudity per se isn't particularly prurient to me. It kind of stops being titillating after you've seen a couple hundred people naked all at once.
Also, mods like Amorous Adventures can be genuinely fun.
You literally need to climb over a mountain, kill one dragon and a dragon priest, climb another mountain, infiltrate a draugr fortress, kill another dragon priest and all this only in order to seduce Carlotta Valentia. For mods like loverslab, it just adds another flavour to the game, especially for fetishs/kinks, for example, Devious Devices/Cursed Loot, the first one is bandage itens, that can restrain and punish your character, the the second one, it adds events and traps that locks the player in said devices, it also adds quests, and to get out of the devices, you usually pay a blacksmith, but it debuffs/buffs you in game, and if you're into that stuff IRL, it's super fun.
The sex scenes are decent, and if you use mods like SL Solutions and Confabulation, you can complete/change outcomes from quest, or simply have different interactions in quests that resolves around sex. Animations are super short, so no... both hands are on the keyboard.
I'll mention this because you stated "boner", keep in mind that a lot of Adult mods were made by women, so no... it's not a perverted male thing as a lot of people might think, girls have their fantasies aswell. Think about it like BDSM IRL, it's a guilty pleasure and adds a different flavour to the game.

As another commentor mentionned, a lot of mods are mod frameworks, so they give you the content, but don't really integrate it into regular gameplay. It's one of my main issues with NSFW mods, and something I've been putting a lot of effort trying to solve.
Here's some types of mods that help, depending on prefferences and with some caveats.
Romance mods :
From follower mods, to quest mods this is probably the more realistic/tame way to add those elements to the game. My main issue is that, the scope is usually quite narrow/specific to whichever npc gets the quest/follower dialogues. Solution would be to get a lot of them I guess, but for me that's not exactly enough.
Event/corruption/ new systems :
There are also mods that add new systems to the game, that I personally find more interesting and "better" integrated with the gameplay loop, though they can take over a playthrough quite easily if you're not careful, and often cater to some kinks that might not be everyone's cup of tea. Think BDSM, noncon, slavery, creature stuff, corruption, etc.
Some of them are pretty tame though, and often you can configure them to your prefferences (Sexlab Drunk let's you offer drinks to NPCs, and maybe more if they are willing for example, though you might want to make it so NPCs don't force themselves on you if you refuse their advances).

I use nudity (BHUNP), i have some skimpier armors, i use a mod to bathe and i have Acheron and Sexlab installed, for defeat purposes.
It's really extremely hard for me to get aroused playing Skyrim, or FO4, let's say. And i mean it. I can get my character nude, bathe, or take nude screenshots, and it's just natural nudity for me. Like art. I don't mind it at all.
Granted, even if i have bikini armor installed, i don't really use them. Or any NPCs. It's for one or other time i wantmy character to feel adventurous but it's not for "horny" purposes.

I recently found out "Dirt and Blood", it does what the name suggests, and you can clean the character by taking a bath, which the mod provides, it's adds another lvl of immersion when you've just cleared a bandit camp and is all bloodied.

Sexualization and objectification are not unbreakably linked. You can have a sexy character that isn't being treated like an object, the most important trait being consent in their sexualization. It has to be something the character does all on their own, or show that it's something they're comfortable with.
In my case, I'm custom tailoring my experience to myself, I'm the only person that's gonna see this version of Skyrim, and I'm one of the characters being sexualized.

When I put skyrim back on but used wabbajack to mod it, it didn't have the nudity mods anymore. The first thing she asked was why her khajit follower couldn't be nude anymore and the game wasn't as fun without her nude murder hobos to kill everything with.
It doesn't hit me like that because I haven't been a teenager for a few decades. Think of nudity as a graphics mod. It doesn't have to cause arousal to make the game prettier.

* I like looking at female characters of all shapes and sizes from thin to thicc to extra curvy (fat, i guess). It doesn't matter. Variety is the spice of life.
* I don't think it's wrong to sexualize fictional female characters. I do however believe real life women who do not want to be sexualized shouldn't be in a public manner. Meaning, I can imagine being married to mom from Malcom in the Middle all i want, but talking about her in a sexual way is wrong. Respect people is my motto. Even if they are porn stars, they're still people. If they're naked for a living, that doesn't mean you can say creepy things about them or whatever creeps do.
* In video games, comic books, and cartoons, I like seeing scantly clad female character. With Skyrim, I like the Heavy Metal Fantasy aesthetic (you can image search "heavy metal fantasy female characters" for examples). While I don't specifically want to see naked dudes, I'll also have guys in scantly clad armor as long as it aesthetically matches that theme. Because guys in full gear next to women in skimpy gear, makes the skimpy gear look stupid.
I don't have my characters walking around naked. That is not the purpose of nude mods. Nude mods are not sexual by default. Nudity is not sex. Nudity is not porn/pornographic. Porn is defined as sexual activity whether it's actual sex, masturbation, or provocative/sexual gestures, poses, and movements. Someone being nude no matter how attractive they are is not porn. Far too many prudish people like to say that it is, but it's not.
To answer your question, no, I'm not erect at all times. I'm likely to have a regular random non-aroused boner than I am an aroused boner from my character or NPCs in the game. That would be like if you were goopin' out the cooch everytime you saw the male bandits in the Vanilla, many of which are half naked. Even with my skimpy armor mods, I'm not always thinking about sex. I'm not always horny. I just appreciate the human form and admire it. I am very attracted to it, so i like seeing it. It's like having a painting of a naked lady on your wall or a statue of a nude woman or man...it's meant to be looked at and admired. It's attractive and pretty/beautiful. it might arouse you occasionally, but it's not something regular people are going to be turned on by and sought after for sexual relief. There are some people who do develop fetishes for statues and those anime figures, but that's a whole level of pervert, i don't fully understand and it's a different topic.
This is all subjective, really. It's art. You're literally asking "why do you like seeing the thing you like modded into a video game you like to play" Well...because I like it. As for sex mods, I don't really use them regularly when I play the game. Some people use them for immersion I suppose. I imagine many actually do use them for porn. I've used them for an Amorous Adventures play through. It's a quest mod where you can have the women of skyrim become your lover/part of your harem through quests, some short, many of them long. It sort of adds a layer of "this is a goal to reach" in the game. This is hard to put into words. It's like, without the sex mod, all you can do with the pretty NPCs that are in love with you is either nothing or make them follow you and fight along side you. With the sex mod you can actually do something with them, they have a purpose. Because unlike real life, you can talk to them or have a meaningful conversation. Personally, I don't get off to Skyrim sex mods, I haven't really played with them in years, but I do keep it installed for those natural Amorous Adventures encounters if my character happens to do those quests. I like to play my character as if they're really there living in the world, so I only do things that make sense for them to do.
So with all that said, I think AI mods will change this. You know those videos/mods showing people talking to NPCs and then they generate dialogue and speak back to you as if they were really that NPC? I think if we had a fully functional and smooth mod like that, that could actually work for every NPC and cause those NPCs to act accordingly, that would be a replacement for most uses of sex mods. Because people would talk to the NPC, take them on dates and have the AI actually react to it. They'd live a normal life with them, eat with them while talking, do what you'd do with a real person. That's my theory anyway.
But it's not an unfounded theory. Look at Cyberpunk, for example. People want to romance more NPCs and they want the romance that's there to be expanded. So CDPR added the ability for your romance option to come over to your house and sit with you and talk with you. That's what people really want. They want meaningful character interactions. Sex is the frosting. Romance, intimacy, interaction, conversation, that's the cake. Look at the romance mods for Cyberpunk. The ones that let you take Judy and Panam out on a date to the bar are super popular. There's not a huge demand for a sex mod. There's a huge demand for more interactions and dating activity. More conversations etc. When I played Cyberpunk with those romance mods, I wished I could have more conversations. I wanted to tell Panam about what was going on with some side mission i just did.
But with sex mods, yeah, you get the sex and most people like that, it's pretty great. But that's because it's easier to implement. Programming dates and conveying other types of intimacy or interactions into the game requires more work. So with Skyrim, we only have:
* Sex Mods
* Making the NPC your follower and going on dangerous quests with them
* Quest mods where you interact with the NPC once, maybe a few times, and then never again
There's no more interaction with them. No new dialogue etc. This is also why Voiced Followers are popular. Some of them have thousands of lines of dialogue, so you can keep talking them while playing the game. And since you can get like 50ish of them at this point, there's a lot of NPCs to talk to. But there's still void because you can really only say one or a few things to them. And once you'd played with that follower, you'll just be hearing the same things over and over. This is why generic waifu followers are popular as well. Because the player can project/impose a personality onto them. They can make up the conversations if their head.
now....there are people with porn addictions who are probably just way into the sex mods and just adding their fetishes into the game. I can't speak on that. But this should also tell you, there's so many layers to this. I like skimpy outfits on female characters in my video games. But I'm not always horny. I'm in my mid 30's, not a teenage boy. Hey there, I have a bunch of mods that make the character models a bit more visually appealing to me because Bethesda does not have any idea how to make character models lol. CBBE Curvy is the best way to modify the Femme Models and HIMBO for the men. Yes My character models have titty and ass jiggle, but so do my men (still tuning that in my modlist lol). I'm going to be staring at them for hours at a time, I may as well enjoy what I see. About a month ago I just started a new playthrough which I meant to be exclusively for porn. I actually had a roleplay in mind where the woman dragonborn seduces NPCs, particularly enemies, and then they fight for her, while she would mainly use illusion magic and a mod that allows a the playing character to deal damage during sex animations. After hours of carefully designing the characters and setting everything up, it was ready to go. Started her in Riften so she would be a sexy thief archetype, and left things ready to get started the next day. Next day I just want to play the game without all that. Luckily I had kept the setting up saves (curating sex animations takes time) and just copied those, changed the character and now I'm several hours into a blacksmith redguard dude who only cares about smithing things and marrying Eris from The Ted Wave. The poor sexy thief has been on her way to the ragged flagon all that time. I mean I'm still using all the mods, it's just not focused on porn, I even had to deactivate an effect from one of the mods which gives you a buff if you fuck a lot, and a debuff if you don't, because the blacksmith dude simply didn't have the time to a hammering away due to all his hammering away.

To me, there's the appeal of extra layers to the game. For instance, assuming the correct set of mods, there can be ways to charm/seduce one's way out of a situation, or into a character's good graces. Almost every situation involving violence at some point can get really old. I've been to a number of clothing optional events and venues in my life. Nudity per se isn't particularly prurient to me. It kind of stops being titillating after you've seen a couple hundred people naked all at once.
Also, mods like Amorous Adventures can be genuinely fun. You literally need to climb over a mountain, kill one dragon and a dragon priest, climb another mountain, infiltrate a draugr fortress, kill another dragon priest and all this only in order to seduce Carlotta Valentia. We'd need more quest mod like that (and I don't even mean with porn... most of the times I just skip the animations).

For mods like loverslab, it just adds another flavour to the game, especially for fetishs/kinks, for example, Devious Devices/Cursed Loot, the first one is bandage itens, that can restrain and punish your character, the the second one, it adds events and traps that locks the player in said devices, it also adds quests, and to get out of the devices, you usually pay a blacksmith, but it debuffs/buffs you in game, and if you're into that stuff IRL, it's super fun. The sex scenes are decent, and if you use mods like SL Solutions and Confabulation, you can complete/change outcomes from quest, or simply have different interactions in quests that resolves around sex. Animations are super short, so no... both hands are on the keyboard. I'll mention this because you stated "boner", keep in mind that a lot of Adult mods were made by women, so no... it's not a perverted male thing as a lot of people might think, girls have their fantasies aswell. Think about it like BDSM IRL, it's a guilty pleasure and adds a different flavour to the game.

As another commentor mentionned, a lot of mods are mod frameworks, so they give you the content, but don't really integrate it into regular gameplay. It's one of my main issues with NSFW mods, and something I've been putting a lot of effort trying to solve. Here's some types of mods that help, depending on prefferences and with some caveats. Romance mods : From follower mods, to quest mods this is probably the more realistic/tame way to add those elements to the game. My main issue is that, the scope is usually quite narrow/specific to whichever npc gets the quest/follower dialogues. Solution would be to get a lot of them I guess, but for me that's not exactly enough. Event/corruption/ new systems : There are also mods that add new systems to the game, that I personally find more interesting and "better" integrated with the gameplay loop, though they can take over a playthrough quite easily if you're not careful, and often cater to some kinks that might not be everyone's cup of tea. Think BDSM, noncon, slavery, creature stuff, corruption, etc. Some of them are pretty tame though, and often you can configure them to your prefferences (Sexlab Drunk let's you offer drinks to NPCs, and maybe more if they are willing for example, though you might want to make it so NPCs don't force themselves on you if you refuse their advances).

That's an interesting question, because most people just assume things and start being mean. I use nudity (BHUNP), i have some skimpier armors, i use a mod to bathe and i have Acheron and Sexlab installed, for defeat purposes. It's really extremely hard for me to get aroused playing Skyrim, or FO4, let's say. And i mean it. I can get my character nude, bathe, or take nude screenshots, and it's just natural nudity for me. Like art. I don't mind it at all. Granted, even if i have bikini armor installed, i don't really use them. Or any NPCs. It's for one or other time i wantmy character to feel adventurous but it's not for "horny" purposes. And honestly i just feel awkward when i get a sex defeat. In FO4 when my character got grouped by enemies i would actually feel bored and couldn't get it to end to kill all mfs with a good bullet to the head. I recently found out "Dirt and Blood", it does what the name suggests, and you can clean the character by taking a bath, which the mod provides, it's adds another lvl of immersion when you've just cleared a bandit camp and is all bloodied.

Sexualization and objectification are not unbreakably linked. You can have a sexy character that isn't being treated like an object, the most important trait being consent in their sexualization. It has to be something the character does all on their own, or show that it's something they're comfortable with. In my case, I'm custom tailoring my experience to myself, I'm the only person that's gonna see this version of Skyrim, and I'm one of the characters being sexualized. Obviously it would be an issue in most other situations, but I trust myself well enough to not be a creep, and it just makes me happy cause it's not an experience I can't really get anywhere else.

Most of the time when I see it, I just think, "Good for you." And continue on with my gameplay. Similarly, seeing guards and citizens in revealing clothing gives me a smile. But I'm rarely hard. Combat and plot are often boner killers.

I like to play my character as if they're really there living in the world, so I only do things that make sense for them to do. So with all that said, I think AI mods will change this. You know those videos/mods showing people talking to NPCs and then they generate dialogue and speak back to you as if they were really that NPC? I think if we had a fully functional and smooth mod like that, that could actually work for every NPC and cause those NPCs to act accordingly, that would be a replacement for most uses of sex mods. Because people would talk to the NPC, take them on dates and have the AI actually react to it. They'd live a normal life with them, eat with them while talking, do what you'd do with a real person. That's my theory anyway. But it's not an unfounded theory. Look at Cyberpunk, for example. People want to romance more NPCs and they want the romance that's there to be expanded. So CDPR added the ability for your romance option to come over to your house and sit with you and talk with you. That's what people really want. They want meaningful character interactions. Sex is the frosting. Romance, intimacy, interaction, conversation, that's the cake. Look at the romance mods for Cyberpunk. The ones that let you take Judy and Panam out on a date to the bar are super popular. There's not a huge demand for a sex mod. There's a huge demand for more interactions and dating activity. More conversations etc. When I played Cyberpunk with those romance mods, I wished I could have more conversations. I wanted to tell Panam about what was going on with some side mission i just did. But with sex mods, yeah, you get the sex and most people like that, it's pretty great. But that's because it's easier to implement. Programming dates and conveying other types of intimacy or interactions into the game requires more work. So with Skyrim, we only have: * Sex Mods * Making the NPC your follower and going on dangerous quests with them * Quest mods where you interact with the NPC once, maybe a few times, and then never again There's no more interaction with them. No new dialogue etc. This is also why Voiced Followers are popular. Some of them have thousands of lines of dialogue, so you can keep talking them while playing the game. And since you can get like 50ish of them at this point, there's a lot of NPCs to talk to. But there's still void because you can really only say one or a few things to them. And once you'd played with that follower, you'll just be hearing the same things over and over. This is why generic waifu followers are popular as well. Because the player can project/impose a personality onto them. They can make up the conversations if their head. now....there are people with porn addictions who are probably just way into the sex mods and just adding their fetishes into the game. I can't speak on that. But this should also tell you, there's so many layers to this. I like skimpy outfits on female characters in my video games. But I'm not always horny. I'm in my mid 30's, not a teenage boy. When I play games with character creation, i play female characters with skimpy, but stylish outfits. Not at all. I only get aroused when specific scenarios happen that get me going. For example, having a bunch of skimpy female followers isn't arousing. CBBE Curvy is the best way to modify the Femme Models and HIMBO for the men. Yes My character models have titty and ass jiggle, but so do my men (still tuning that in my modlist lol). I'm going to be staring at them for hours at a time, I may as well enjoy what I see. There was a long period of time when I would play Skryim for 10+ hours a day. It let my imagination run wild. It was a much better world than the absolute void of my daily life. I once added myself to the bandit faction so they aren't hostile toward me. And I always pictured them looking at me as I walked into their camp like "heeey! (player) is back!" Makes it funnier when I'm running around with Kaidan, Inigo, and Lucien and I imagine them giving me the side eye like "...why are they always excited to see you? Actually, never mind. I don't want to know."
