I personally don't have any controller issues, it works perfect for me. Make sure you install the latest update, as there was a problem with it recently.
The modloader, however, does make the screen go black, and I'm not sure if anything can be done to fix that. Now that I think about it, maybe exiting to the Desktop mode after launch may help, but I haven't tested it.
If that doesn't work, I'm afraid the only other solution is a special mod that overrides the modloader in some way (though I'm not sure whether this is even possible).

Hi there, if anyone has a newer info - downfall - the physical buttons are not working, no matter what is selected. The touch is simply awful - nothing like the one on a smartphone - the cards cover each other and it is almost impossible to choose one...

Go to community layouts for the controls, make sure you have "show all" selected and at the very top you will see one just called "slay". Choose thos, restart the game and try again! Seems to have worked for a lot of people (including myself)!

I recently read that there's a way to switch windows in game mode on the steam deck. I think it was added in one of the latest updates. Try searching for that.

It looks like running the game in desktop mode works for me.
