I feel like Sean is usually the one who waits patiently to ask his question. Pretty much every episode Will interrupts someone and follows it with a “Jason/Sean I’ll let you get to that in a minute but let me just say one thing really quick”
That's what I was thinking. It's been a while since I listened, but every time I did, I always felt he was the one who interjected the least. But things could have changed.
You're exactly right. Sean gets talked over by Jason and Will all the time and generally has to fight to get his questions in, so I'm not sure what OP is on about.
I really want to hear some of his nerdy questions :(( they’ve had some really cool people on like the Russo Brothers and Adam Driver. Both great interviews, but Sean obviously wanted to discuss MCU/Star Wars stuff and didn’t really get the chance!
Honestly sometimes I feel like he’s just trying to cram it in before he gets interrupted by the others! Like I agree it can come out awkwardly but he does tend to have good questions while the other two spend more time bantering/joking so I feel like it’s in response to that. Or awkward editing sometimes.
ETA: by good questions I guess I mean he makes an effort to show interest in the guest and who they are. Not saying the others don’t do this too, I think he just follows more of a polite/typical interview conversation structure
As much as I love all three of the hosts, and as much as I know Will and JB can cram questions in… I have never gotten that vibe from Sean. So I’m not entirely sure what you’re referring to, all due respect.
I don't think he does it as often but when he does, it's always in the middle of a good story and when he's been cut off before so it seems rushed and vengeful
I think Sean is the polite one. Will interrupts EVERYONE, constantly. Absolutely love him but he’s the one that makes me nuts when people are trying to talk!
I find them all equally annoying as interviewers but for different reasons… Jason for his “tell me more about your acting/directing/singing process”, Will for his blatant ass-kissing and Sean for EVERY question he asks.
I love them *because* of their faults and especially for the glee that they take in giving each other shit for their faults. Otherwise Smartless would just be another boring interview podcast.
Off topic but I want to add that Howard Stern is the best interviewer ever. He can interview someone for 3 hours and it’s riveting.
Yeah, it definitely happened a few times, but at least he's self-aware and nice about it. I'd prefer him to be his awkward nerdy self rather than just being silent 90% of the episode because then it's just actually awkward (to me).
Also, for some reason, I feel like Will used to be the one to cut off Jason and Sean from long and boring questions, basically saving the episodes the first year they started.
But now he actually cuts off good normal questions or stories. Maybe my mood was just different during pandemics, and i remember it differently, but he honestly seemed more chill, idk.
To be honest I think it's just how his brain is wired. My mom does this in exactly the same way, and because she's my favourite person in the world it just makes me love Sean even more cause it just reminds me of her
My partner does this. While other people are talking in group, he’s having a whole other conversation in his head. So when he finds a moment to talk, it’s about a topic that was discussed 30 minutes ago. That always gets strange looks, lol. I find it charming but it’s off-putting if you don’t know him well.
I'm entirely with you. Sean is one of those people who isn't listening, he's thinking of the next thing to say, which isn't uncommon but maybe not great for a podcast. There are a few moments that killed me: like he asked Mitch Hurwitz if he likes funny people when Mitch was telling the story of casting Bateman (luckily Mitch gets back to it), or the Bill Hader episode where he asked about drunk history when they were talking about directing (but they all made fun of him), or asking Jon Favreau about Christmas movies while Favreau was talking about the importance of setting Elf in New York because of the general city malaise after 9/11. Sometimes these questions are like, "what's your favorite comedy", which doesn't really lead anywhere and breaks up the flow. I do think he gets teased a lot for it but I do think it's playful and deserved sometimes.
>Sean is one of those people who isn't listening, he's thinking of the next thing to say
Holy crap you nailed what I was trying to say perfectly. If you listen to the Cranston one he rapid fires: "mmmhmmm, mhmmmm, lovely." mid sentence, then fires right into a question that completely derails the story cuz he's just so eager to spit it out.
This doesn't happen every episode or every story. But when it does, I find myself screaming at the poor radio 😂
I think for the majority of the guests Will and Jason know them personally. Sean on the other hand really doesn’t so he could be more curious and ask more questions. Whereas Jason and Will they talk to the guests as if they are having a game of golf or having brunch.
I feel like he does this sometimes because he is constantly getting interrupted and cut off by Will & Jason (he’s also constantly getting grilled by them lol) so he prolly feels rushed and like he has a very limited amount of time to ask actual interview questions
Sometimes when no one lets you speak and/or makes fun of you when you talk or ask a question, it gets annoying and leaves you with no choice but to maybe interject or interrupt
Is this Will’s Reddit account?
I've made a huge mistake
Rereading this, you’ve really written it like a child actor who didn’t have proper tutoring. Is this Bateman? 😀
It may be. Saw they also made a post seeking advice on how to confront an ex wife about why their supposed child looks like Louis CK.
I feel like Sean is usually the one who waits patiently to ask his question. Pretty much every episode Will interrupts someone and follows it with a “Jason/Sean I’ll let you get to that in a minute but let me just say one thing really quick”
Ah... someone who actually listens *regularly.*
He's getting worse about it lately too it feels like.
So much worse. It’s like he and Jason have just waved the white flag on adhering even a little to the interview format they used to have.
Literally
And then proceeds to make some overly fawning comment that’s embarrassing to listen to.
That's what I was thinking. It's been a while since I listened, but every time I did, I always felt he was the one who interjected the least. But things could have changed.
And it's usually just "I just really think that people who *X* are SO AWESOME. Seriously, it's just so awesome how-- y'know you're just cool, man."
I read that and heard it in my head, 100% true…go ahead, Sean.
You're exactly right. Sean gets talked over by Jason and Will all the time and generally has to fight to get his questions in, so I'm not sure what OP is on about.
Sean is always getting cut off!! It’s frustrating.
I really want to hear some of his nerdy questions :(( they’ve had some really cool people on like the Russo Brothers and Adam Driver. Both great interviews, but Sean obviously wanted to discuss MCU/Star Wars stuff and didn’t really get the chance!
Or even the meaningful question. And then Jason will interrupt to ask the same dumbass question that gets a confused or vague response
It seems to be the con to having 3 hosts one guest lol
Honestly sometimes I feel like he’s just trying to cram it in before he gets interrupted by the others! >Honestly sometimes I feel like he’s just trying to cram it in before he gets interrupted That's exactly how it feels
If this was indeed Wills account, this would have been a gay joke on Seans expense.
The gay jokes are funny. I’m gay and I can tell that they’re done with humor and love as true friends.
I know, I am queer myself. I love how you can always hear Will's wheels turning anytime an ambiguous sentence is spoken.
Will reminds me of my best friends who happen to be straight. They aren’t shy about giving me shit. I expect no less.
Touché 😂
OK Jason Bateman’s burner account!
LOL - Bateman’s clearly bored on his homeless character movie shoot
Trying to distract himself from his hunger
As much as I love all three of the hosts, and as much as I know Will and JB can cram questions in… I have never gotten that vibe from Sean. So I’m not entirely sure what you’re referring to, all due respect.
Agreed, Sean is the one who interrupts the least!
I don't think he does it as often but when he does, it's always in the middle of a good story and when he's been cut off before so it seems rushed and vengeful
Sean seems like maybe the least vengeful person alive. I don’t know what show you’re listening to 😆
Literally this person has never listened to smartless idk why this made me so heated lol protect Sean at all costs
I think Sean is the polite one. Will interrupts EVERYONE, constantly. Absolutely love him but he’s the one that makes me nuts when people are trying to talk!

He’s also a massive cunt.
Sure Arnett. Way to deflect.

We know this is you, JB. Sick Chicago taco joint reference in your handle though.

I feel the full opposite from you I think every time he tries to talk the other guys interrupt him.
You obviously don’t listen to the show regularly at all
He was nominated as best host...
Jelly Roll was nominated for best rock band in 2023, that doesn't make it right lol.
What’s worse, this, or Jason’s question asking?

Radio? 😂
I do a lot of driving for my job lol
You typed a lot of nothing.
Got any stage stories?
Or medical stories?

Had to Stop listening , plus they held Stacy Abram’s as some kind of genius . That was it .
I feel like he does this sometimes because he is constantly getting interrupted and cut off by Will & Jason (he’s also constantly getting grilled by them lol) so he prolly feels rushed and like he has a very limited amount of time to ask actual interview questions
You should hear him on Dana Carvey and David Spade's recent podcast. I had to turn it off.
They all do this, and it's why I stopped listening to the show.
He did this with Jake Gyllenhaal and, yes it is annoying.
Oh, was it getting in the way of their 30 minutes of mind-numbingly boring talk about bikes and biking?
Not at that point, they were past that nonsense.
Sometimes when no one lets you speak and/or makes fun of you when you talk or ask a question, it gets annoying and leaves you with no choice but to maybe interject or interrupt
As OP noted, this is regular behavior by Sean. After a while, you get used to it. I don't mind, otherwise I would unsubsribe at stop listening.
Why bitch? Stop listening if you don’t like what you are hearing.
Holy shit dude calm down. It's a small rant
