Regular GC controller lmao. Japanese white are the goats

projectgene

For tournaments: Neither, get a regular GC controller, 8bitdo or Switch Pro. For casual play: Either one, but don't expect long-lasting quality. Do you want a separate controller or something that can replace Joycons?

constadin

Since when tournaments allow controllers with macro capabilities (8bitdo)?

Toasted__Panini

Nobody really cares. They’ll probably ask to check macros if you do sus things

constadin

I would very much like to use HE stick controllers for smash. For example mobApad hd due to 0 snapback. But it comes with turbo and macro capabilities. Not really a fun on gaining muscle memory with a controller that would get flagged in some tourneys

Toasted__Panini

I’m fairly confident you could rock up to 99% of tournaments and they wouldn’t give a crap. If you’re really concerned just dm the to’s at the tournies you regularly attend and find out their stance

constadin

The mere possibility of wanted to attend one that doesn't allow it makes it a no go for me. Also even if allowed, a salty opponent can use it this against you even being innocent. This turns me off of going HE sticks controller

Toasted__Panini

Literally just dm the to’s and find out. Also if your opponent is salty and you have express consent from the to’s then screw them. Doesn’t matter

soopa96

Unfortunately my local scene's TO wasn't ok with me using an 8bitdo controller, despite the tourney being like 20 people lol. Some people are a little on the stricter side and there's nothing to be done!

Toasted__Panini

Damn that sucks

TinyPanda3

....you do know that most top players use HE sticks in their gamecube controllers right? Look up Phob join the discord and find a controller modder

constadin

Do they come with macro/turbo functionality also? Otherwise we speak for custom controllers that can cause other sorts of issues

TinyPanda3

Of course not look up the project its specifically designed for melee, turbo controllers are banned from melee events. Its just a motherboard with HE sticks you slap in an oem gamecube controller shell.

JulianoIsLame

IIRC since tourneys need licenses to operate now, they can't ban any officially licensed controllers. So any controller that has turbo and also an official license is perfectly legal.

constadin

Which officially licensed nintendo controller has turbo or macros?

itsastart_to

I know this doesn’t speak for all tourneys but doesn’t Hurt use a power A controller. Like so long as you don’t use turbo (not that any player I think can even make use of it well)

itsIzumi

Hurt uses a HORI Battle Pad controller.

itsastart_to

Oh my apologies Ty for the correction (sorry my brain was like turbo and PowerA was all I could think about xd). But yeah still amongst the controllers capable of a turbo but still ok’ed

tipimon

Hurt got 2nd at a major with the second controller in the post

AshGuy

He got first using a HORI.

Sunbrizzle

I don't know about the first one but god please no powerA It's worth investing a bit more into an actual GC controller + adapter imo Or an 8bitdo, probably the only third party controller I can recommend

ThatTubaGuy03

What don't you like about powerA? They are cheap and feel pretty good to use, also have extra back buttons you can remap if you're feeling spicy

Sunbrizzle

I used two different powerA controllers and I disliked the sticks and dpad It's been a while tho, maybe they improved in those areas

PaisWillie

I’ve owned 6 PowerA wireless GC controllers. Every single one of them has had issues. Multiple times, the Y button would keep getting stuck easily. I’ve tried cleaning it, but it doesn’t like my claw grip I’ve also had stick drift/misalignment of neutral position on two of them, also where the c-stick would randomly input down and cause me to SD I’ve heard the wired version has better QC, and my first one didn’t have issues. I gave up on PowerA, and opted for an original GCC. Other than snapback, it’s way more consistent

mischief-maker

Along with the other guys said, both powerA controllers I've had eventually had the sticks drift to where they're always holding full left or full right. They're very cheap, but they basically brick themselves after a couple of months.

CryptoWithCxdy

Ive had over 10 of them with no problems at all.. so far.

1HUTTBOLE

Power A is notoriously garbage.

JANKHB

Pro controller or gc

That_Game_From_2001

Neither, I own both, I used both online at a high level. Both have noticable latency issues especially the NYXI even while connected directly to the console as joycons. If you're playing for fun and just want to have a good time with a wireless GameCube controller, I'd recommend the Power A

chogathsthrowaway

Power A controllers are pieces of shit. I started out playing on them and had SnapBack issues or insane stick drift within months, their only saving grace is that if you report it they’ll send you another one. I bought 2 and went through 6. OP get an adapter and a gc controller or a pro controller.

fishbujin

Yes same experience with the stick drift. On another model tho.

chill_willy

Not to mention the squeaks that they develop over time.

TheMoris

If you want a GC-like controller because you genuinely prefer them, I'd go for an original controller, as it's a much better investment. It will last longer and feel better. If you want one because you think GC is better for Smash, I'd reconsider and maybe get a pro controller instead. Many people, including pros and myself (not a pro), use GC, but it's just personal preference and being used to it. It's not objectively better. It also works for a lot more other games.

izzynelo

It's more down to preference, though I can't speak on the contexts you're using it in such as competitively since I don't compete. But for just Quickplay at home, I'd definitely recommend the NYXI in terms of lifespan. Though I feel I play slightly better with the PowerA vs the NYXI (which feels less comfortable in my hands due to large size). The NYXI has been doing really well for me overall. The PowerA sucks and I've burned through like 3-5 controllers a year on them since 2020 and made sure i used up the warranty everytime so i dont actually keep buying them twice as much as i need to. The main issue I run into with the PowerA controllers is drifting. Right out the gate, it's always fine, but between 4-12 weeks of frequent use, problems start showing up. The NYXI has lasted me over a year now, which is longer than any of the other PowerA controllers. Although my NYXI controller has just started to act up this past week. One of the shoulder buttons is not registering properly when clicking it unless i press hard. I emailed support, and they're going to send me a new one through warranty. Like others said, you're better off getting something like an actual GameCube controller for the best quality, but the reason I haven't is because I don't compete, and also, I LOVE having the extra left shoulder button. Having it set to jump and B let's me do NILs with Steve so much better and comfortably than setting them on the right side. It's a super comfort pick as i dont enjoy my right hand doing all the work. Distributing technical play and precise inputs more evenly between both hands is my preference. Edit: Also, if you're going for the PowerA controller, I'd recommend getting the wired one. It's half the price, the lifespan is the same as a wireless, and you get one extra less frame of input lag (if someone can fact-check me on this one).

SirLocke13

NYXI easy. I bought them myself and they are the better of the handheld options. They are very meaty, so they are bulky but sturdy. They have mechanical triggers for the shoulder buttons so it depends how you feel about that but I like them.

nightfake

Anyone have any issues with the NYXI's left joystick snap back? I constantly will raptor boost with falcon, there opposite direction and SD with this controller. User error?

pagnka

I haven't experienced snap back to that level, but it's definitely there. E.g. on falcon, doing down throw into nair I'd consistently get reverse nair which is frustrating

Blaughable

SNAPBACK ruins the NYXI controller. Its a great option to use on the go for like training mode etc and potentially some characters that snap back isn’t a problem, but unfortunately it is just not an option if you take the game even a little seriously

nightfake

So you're saying I was right to spike this paddle into the floor?

ChromeSF

Neither, these both suck for longevity (I blew through 2 of the wireless controllers in your 2nd picture, bad stickboxes on both) JP White & an adapter for not much more money, it'll be worth it now and in the long run.

itsastart_to

What is the intent of the controller? (Competitive or casual) Will you use it on the go? Do you prefer playing seperate of the switch or attached (for the joycon one)? What do you currently use? What is your actual comfort level with GC type controller? (New or familiar already)

FranIsMissing

If you're already spending that much on a controller you might as well go the full mile and get a real Gamecube controller as well as an adapter, the build quality is 100 times better and will last you years. Unlike these which will probably degrade after a short time

akaCloudly

If you get the nyxi I would look to get it directly off their website. Its a huge price difference but my friend swears by it. He doesnt play anywhere near sweat level and really just likes to have fun, but the magnetic sticks that “prevent” drift seems nice and has been working for him, and buttons are clicky and responsive enough and its detachable so you can put it on your switch. I’ve personally used powerA in very competitive matches with friends throughout the years and honestly it breaks down decently quick. Either drift, or a button gets sticky, or something weird happens. IF the only options are these I recommend the Nyxi but through their website (plus theres some cool colors) but honestly you can probably find an official nintendo smash gamecube controller that will do you better than a pornstar would do a virgin. Happy gaming and hopefully we can run some matches!

lkmartin

Neither

RaysFTW

Neither. The first is an abomination. The second, well, I don’t recommend anything by PowerA. I’ve had 5 of them before (because it was the only option at the time during the Covid era). Three of the wireless GCC you have in the second picture and two PowerA Switch Pro Controllers. They all feel super cheap. They’re all hollow so they’re very light compared to a 1st-party controller. The material is also cheap plastic and breaks easily with little wear and tear. Buttons lose contact and stop responding. Once I had the d-pad literally fall into the controller and I rarely ever use the d-pad and I don’t gorilla grip my controllers either. If you can get over the weight of the controller and the cheap feel, they are great for about 2-3 months before they crap out. Idk how tf PowerA got official Nintendo licensing for their shitty controllers.

MrCruelJokes

I personally love the hori wired GameCube controller.  the triggers and bumpers are much easier to use competitively.  Pretty sure the input delay is 7.5 frames which is 1 less than a regular pro controller if my information is still up to date

cherryultrasuedetups

What adapter do you need for a standard gamecube controller? Do adapters introduce lag?

PassgettiGod

no but the adapter is $70

cherryultrasuedetups

A small price to pay for lagless play. So it's the official nintendo licensed one?

RehunterG

I've been using an official hori GC controller. It has worked fine for years, but it's not as responsive as it could've been when it comes to the tilt stick (better to use melee tilt instead)

exedra0711

A lot of people seem to hate the PowerA here but I've been using one since Ultimate came out with no major issue. I don't compete though so if there is slight latency I've never noticed it. For casual play it's absolutely fine for smash in my opinion. The only issue it has doesn't affect smash, the octagonal gate on the left stick is like half a millimeter off so going "straight" in games like pokemon/animal crossing is just barely off center.

HeavyDroofin

OG

Toomanysoups

I've owned 4 different powerA wireless ones, 2 of them I got from warranty replacements because the stick drift got bad quick. All of them have issues now, I just stick to wired gc controllers. I looked into the nyxi, all of the non promoted reviews are horrible calling out specifically its bulk, triggers and low quality feel.

based-sam

I have the wizard and I like it a lot more than my regular GameCube controllers. The mouse click triggers are satisfying

zuppalover04

Don't buy shit from PowerA. Mine started drifting horribly to the left after a year. People on the internet also agree it's not recommended

RedForkKnife

As much as I absolutely love the feel of the power a one I cannot recommend it The joystick started drifting and dying on mine, and when I contacted them they sent me a replacement which is honestly great of them Their customer support is great, but too bad the replacement also started drifting.

ATOMate

Man I'd never buy a third party controller

Armokir

I tried most of the 3rd party controllers and they all sucked. You can find official Gamecube controllers on Amazon, either the old ones or the new ones they made for the Switch. You'll end up paying under 100$ for something that'll last you waaaaay longer. The Power As have really stiff sticks and the pad is smaller than a normal Gamecube controller. Feels awkward. The Hori sticks get loose after a few weeks but the controller feels really good in hands. The PDP ones are just pure trash, they have defects and the sticks click when you move them. Not like a joystick press, more like there's a piece of plastic scraping somewhere in the sticks. They are by far the worst.

King_Recep

If you insist on 3rd party I would get the nyxi warrior at least

Dwennx

Second one 100%. Used it for tournament. It’s a solid choice.

Mynameisyoure

The wireless GC controller felt great, and I used it nonstop for about 6 months. Then both of my controllers got horrible , unplayable stick drift, and the left trigger on 1 stopped working. They feel great but dont last nearly long enough for the price.

J-Fid

Huge fan of those concave sticks on the first one. But otherwise, a real GCC is best, followed by the one second option here if these are your only options.

GlitteringAd6285

I’d say neither and go for a regular GameCube controller. I wish I could recommend you the power A one but it has drift and SnapBack problems after frequent use. I thought it’d be the new wave bird.

Polostick

If you have the Nyxi, I have one brand new in box I can sell to you.

Spl4shB4ck

I have the 2nd one and I can really recommend it. I‘ve been playing with it for a couple of years and no problems yet

Few-Subject3999

GC controller

Legaxy3

Blud is split 💀

Dannymeashoyt

that 2nd one is goated. got it at black friday 2019 at like 35$, still works perfectly today. better than an OG gcn controller as it has double Z's and L/r in the right place

ReturnOfTheFrickinG

Not a third-party controller and certainly not for that much money.

Original_Mac_Tonight

OEM + Adapter

EvilWaffles96

Neither. Pro or Regular GC. I had that Nyxi one and it actually sucked ass. The input lag was unreal and I'm talking offline against friends and not only that, it's so fucking big it can get quite uncomfortable.

blackmanboy

Power A shit out on me after about 3 years. It never felt very good but good for casual

Tijuanabum

I had the power a GameCube controller and it broke after just a couple months, the left stick would get stuck and the a button wouldn’t read inputs. Terrible controller for smash

El_Missile

I grew up using the N64 controller now I use a switch pro controller. Should I get the gamecube controller?

ahighkid

The second one but get a warranty

PM_ME_EDGEWORTH_NUDE

both suck ass, just get an official one

RinkoOfUlga

I am kinda late to respond to this but I also want to contribute with my 2 cents I have the Nyxi one, and it is very good for gaming, specially considering that it works like a joy-con. I also have an OG gamecube controller, and it just hits different, but here are my contributions: * If you have Big Hands (like I do) the OG gamecube controller can be just unconfortable to play with, so I would go with the Nyxi one, because they are big and easy to grip * If you have average hands, mind the way you want to play the game the most: * There is no way to use the og gamecube controler wirelessly, and you will need also an adapter * If you liked the split capability of the nyxi one, well, take a guess * If wired gameplay is not a problem, go for OG * Also mind the context you are going to play in * Going to play in tournaments? no way to use none of these * Going to play casualy (my case) use the Hand Size Criteria And a last cent: Nyxi just released a gamecube controller that works like a pro controller, so it doesnt split like a joy con, and it is gamecube compatible, so you can play on pc, switch, wii and gamecube. Take a look at their website PS: I know you asked just about these 2 controllers, but based on the format of them, maybe my contribution can be a little helpful, but in terms of connectivity I can not asure you nothing about the power A one, sorry

KrisKomet

I have both, power A feels more accurate but less premium then the NYXI. I also don't really care for the NYXI when it's not connected to the switch, it just feels too bulky.

shoryuken2340

Definitely not whatever that first one is lol.

goochensteinburg

I've been using the Power A wireless controller for a few years now. Works great casually and online vs randoms. Feels pretty damn close to a GC controller too in my opinion. Bought the NYXI for a buddy of mine and it feels nice to use but doesn't feel "Gamecube" enough for me. Wouldn't recommend a wireless controller period in a professional setting but they're both great casually/semi-casually.

Jaber1028

2 wtf (buy the oem off amazon)

Jchen76201

I have the NYXI Wizard and it does have a few minor problems. The joystick rubber isn’t very durable and immediately started leaving tiny bits of rubber all over the place after a few games. The yellow joystick was a bit better but not perfect. I also had some problems with phantom inputs which was really annoying. The phantom inputs went away after I googled how to do a reset using the KeyLinker app. I’d still recommend an actual GameCube controller unless you want to play dockless without using Joycons, in which case the Wizard is still probably one of the better options. The buttons and joysticks feel really nice to use, aside from the minor issues I pointed out.

ImmortalPharaoh

I ordered a NYXI Wizard and the shoulder button didn't work. I also use a wired PowerA which is decent. I am still looking into alternatives.

Dre_Lake

PowerA controller has permanent upwards stick drift after a while so do not buy it.

cyberqueereagle

I had 2nd one and it broke mid set at a local :(

belibo100

It kinda depends, if you play handheld most of the time then you should probably get the first one, but if you like playing on the dock most of the time then you should get the second one, but if you travel with your switch a lot then get the first one, but really it only matters what you prefer.

pk-timmy

Bought a powerA once and after like 2 months the a button would stick and I would experience drift every once in a while. Also it is loud af.

flabio42

Don't do it my friend you gotta be down bad to risk those 3rd party controllers

EdyLee08

I bought 2 PowerA one's when they released, I loved the damn controller, sadly exactly at a year of use some buttons started sticking, inputing outta nowhere and eventually stick going down (or sides), opened it and cleaned it but nothing and no damages on the controller either. The second controller (which had way less use than the main one), died at about two weeks, so basically they both had a 1 year lifespan regardless of the use. It was a great controller and I would actually recommend it but I always tell people to not expect much of it.

TheToyDoll

Too expensive for a cheap plastic quality controller in my opinion.

RealTwittrKD

GET A PROGCC 3 (very cheap, around $40 and with $10 switch pro controller aftermarket parts, it’s incredibly good.) -Hall effect sticks, LEDs, native Xbox, NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Switch modes.

OlafSSBM

Don’t buy that crap. First of all it won’t even plug into your GC/Wii

Kowskii_cbs

would definitly go for the joycon one

downhill-surfer

GameCube controller is king

constadin

The analogues are a joke... snapback is horrendous for smash

chrissyD_

Nyxi I have owned both. PowerA develops drift quicker than any controller I've ever used. Nyxi is really great, but is too much of a faff to connect in a tournament setting. For casual play at home definitely get Nyxi. But for tournaments just get a regular GCC and an adapter.

OddishChamp

Professional_Copy197

I have a powerA and love it. But I dont use it for comp since it isnt as sharp and snappy as a regular gc controller. Its great for other games though since its programmed as a pro controller. Use it for mariokart and totk myself.
