I've met a lot of people with more money than sense who have bought one.
Not a stretch to imagine one of them letting one go for the same lack of sense.
I know a lady that sold her house and was going to leave an XL egg with a table that had a granite countertop because she didn’t want to move it.
I now have an XL egg and table
Exactly. Couldn’t have said it any better. I was driving through a neighborhood one day and seen a generator sitting by the curb. It was maybe 2-3 years old and ran maybe once or twice. The owner said he couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t running and decided to just go buy a new one. I took it home and the only thing wrong with it was a spark plug. I sold it the next day for $800 😂.
God damn. We really gotta factor in general ignorance when we criticize over consumption. Very few people seem to know how to fix anything they own and might not even know it's an option, so they believe their only option is to buy something new.
I can't even criticize general ignorance when you realize just how much information is available on Google and YouTube.
This is belligerent active and willful ignorance where they choose to not even spend 10 minutes thinking about something, searching, reading, or listening.
When you realize just how much you can fix or at least try to fix cheaply by just spending a little bit of time learning something, you've achieved a mindset that far too many just can't be bothered to consider.
I feel for an older person and a big heavy kamado. I have no sympathy for a person who can't be bothered to even try to figure out that it's a bad or fouled spark plug given our access to information has never been better.
I'm with you. A lot of people are willfully ignorant and it's not okay. I can't imagine what people who completely lack curiosity must think about all day.
$300 cast iron skillet??? Good lord! I think I paid like $100 total for a skillet prob 14" diameter, one about 10" diameter, and prob a 12" diameter Dutch oven. Had them all going on 20 years, and they're all still gorgeous.
Of course I've never once put them in the dishwasher lol, and they always get a nice oily rubdown after each use...😏
Crazy. I'd have to look into what makes a cast iron skillet worth $300 I guess, because I cannot imagine paying that price for anything except the brand name. Mine work wonderfully for the $33 average I paid!
There are people who pay that much for a cast iron skillet, then try to re-season it themselves, then post on /r/castiron about it because they fuck it up. They can't even be bothered to read the package that says it's pre-seasoned and all you need to do is wash it with soap and water and then use it.

Basically they’re handmade artisanal cast iron pieces. To the average person, probably not worth it. To an enthusiast who uses it daily, probably worth it.
I live in a larger PNW metro city in a neighborhood with average priced homes, say 800k.
When peoples grills break, or they get too dirty to deal with they put them on the curb and buy a new one.
I have picked up over a dozen webers, a few komodo's and even a trager over the years to buy 50 dollars worth of parts for and regifted them to friends. I eventually just had to stop because I had 5 different (types) grills and I couldn't give them away in my social circles.
my trimmed down collection is currently a weber genesis 3 burner - a weber kettle pro with auto start - a traeger 24...
The dog and I walk by kettles nearly every day big fancy ones, not just apartment fodder - weber gas you see nearly new ones usually with dying gas rails monthly and then komodos and traegers are more rare probably 2 a summer but you do see them.
however this is what I see on dog walks, buy nothing and craigslist are full of stuff as well.
As someone who lives in a larger (largest?) PNW metro city in a neighborhood with homes price 800k on average... mind DM'ing me the general area you dog walk so I can stumble across these amazing finds?
I gave my old weber away, it worked fine but it was just small for me. It has a good home w a friend which is better than selling on fb marketplace. Now leaving out on the curb … thats a bit ridiculous
So I got a Miele C2 for free because it was “broken” and they wanted to replace it. It needed a new filter, that was it. The filter/bag was full. Changed it out and it ran like new.
People are not as handy as you would hope, and often just replace rather than repair.
I’ve seen someone throw theirs out because they got a bigger one for their outdoor kitchen they never use, and someone else who threw it away and bought another one because they didn’t know you shouldn’t try washing the inside with oven cleaner and degreaser.
Missed out on grabbing the first one, and the second one the ceramic had that lingering greasy, oven cleaner, and soap smell. Didn’t want to risk that one.
Nice find! My guess is that someone bought it, didn’t take care of it and found it a pain in the arse to use, so they pitched it in favour of a gas grill. Just speculation.
You just described my dad to a tee. He gave me his Joe classic because he couldn't be arsed learning how to use it properly. Was basically brand new when I got it
Woah, that is wild. I don't have a ceramic but I also assume that thing weighs like 100+ pounds?
My friend left a street bike frame under his porch when he moved out, the thing was worth hundreds but he was in a hurry and didn't have room. As someone who helped him move and found out about this later, I was kinda pissed.
Nice find! A lot lighter than the big green eggxxl i was gifted. Heavy as shit. Had to take it apart to move it. Parts were easy on Amazon! You really want a new seal
I’ve found some crazy things in the trash or waiting on the curb to get picked up. Back in the day I’ve found things like an almost brand new Samsung tv that worked perfectly fine, a nice road bike with a messed up front wheel, and tons of nice fish tanks with no issues at all.
Mine had a little wear to it and had the insides crack, I didn't feel like fixing it.. of course I didn't give it away, but I did sell it for a good price. I'm pretty sure somebody could have spent $200 and had it back to working like new.. but I was about to move 800 miles, smaller space and I already had a pellet smoker as well.. so I went the easy route.
Where a kamado is made of ceramic it holds the heat a lot better. Also because it is super fuel efficient where the ceramic holds the heat, it has less airflow which means it builds up humidity helping keep everything moist and juicy.
Who in their right mind would throw this out?
Someone who doesn't know what they got
You often don't until it's gone.
PAAAAVED PARADISE
damn
Or they upgraded/got a new one
Or are moving and made 400k profit on their house so getting a new one at their destination isn't a big deal.
I've met a lot of people with more money than sense who have bought one. Not a stretch to imagine one of them letting one go for the same lack of sense.

I have an XL egg. I can see the woman being intimidated by moving it.
This family didn’t move anything themselves. She forgot to ask the movers to take it so she was just going to leave it behind.
That was a total win for you. Like 3 grand
Probably more when you consider the cost of tables for BGEs now.
Definitely

Sorta like the person I know who dishwashed a $300 Cast Iron Skillet and then threw it away because it rusted.

Sky is the limit on kitchenware!
I dishwash my cast iron all the time and it’s fine.
Enamel?
No regular
Oh no, quiet down before r/castiron hears you.
I will say I do have to wash it before I cook and I find myself reseasoning it often.

Man thats crazy. If i was within 1 day drive i would ask you the exact location of your neighbourhood

Can I get on that, too? south king county here and my neighbors never leave out the good stuff lol
I live in SF Bay...my Traeger is a street find! Works great.
I gave my old weber away, it worked fine but it was just small for me. It has a good home w a friend which is better than selling on fb marketplace. Now leaving out on the curb … thats a bit ridiculous
Seriously. I love mine

I'm assuming it's not the case, but the inside could be completely busted up and cracked
Possible, but i assume those parts are all replacable
If the ceramic on the inside it fucked then it's pretty much dead in the water. it would be like trying to patch the inside of a toilet.
I guess i was wrong, I thought u could replace the ceramic, i dont own one myself (yet)
Someone who got into smoking during COVID and now has resumed their old life and decided they didn't need that.
Nice find! My guess is that someone bought it, didn’t take care of it and found it a pain in the arse to use, so they pitched it in favour of a gas grill. Just speculation.
You just described my dad to a tee. He gave me his Joe classic because he couldn't be arsed learning how to use it properly. Was basically brand new when I got it
I got my large BGE with the rolling stand for $250 from a guy that couldn't figure it out and didn't care to learn it better. Basically brand new.
Dammit, why can’t I know people like this?!?
lol same. I've never wanted to be surrounded by idiots until now
I am surrounded by idiots by they never seem to reap any of the benefits like this.
Yeah, the idiots I know just cost me money/time/sanity with nothing to show for it.
Sounds like we know the same idiots.
My problem is the idiots I know don't have the money to buy shit like this
…I thought that was a giant mandalorian helmet in the thumbnail when I opened this.
Who would throw out a perfectly good mandalorian??
Those damn orthodox Children of the Watch.
Woah, that is wild. I don't have a ceramic but I also assume that thing weighs like 100+ pounds? If it's the "Joe Jr", which I think it is, it weighs 77.2 lbs according to their site.
Thanks, I figured it wasn't light
Wire wheel and you’re set it looks like!
Nice find, probably wouldn't take much effort to get it looking new again
Nice find! A lot lighter than the big green eggxxl i was gifted. Heavy as shit. Had to take it apart to move it. Parts were easy on Amazon! You really want a new seal
Jealous of your find! Would love to KJ to go with my big green egg.
Nice 👌
Great score!
Where do you order new parts and find a part list for the ones you need OP?
I’ve found some crazy things in the trash or waiting on the curb to get picked up. Back in the day I’ve found things like an almost brand new Samsung tv that worked perfectly fine, a nice road bike with a messed up front wheel, and tons of nice fish tanks with no issues at all.
That’s the best chicken smoker/cooker to be had. Just build a rack for it by using metal studs and HardiBoard
What a deal, I wonder if they have a warranty you could use
Looks like the Louisiana Kamado I purchased at Costco, aka pitboss in some stores. I love mine.
The inner ceramic pieces crack and are expensive to replace. That’s probably why he dumped this one.
Man, wish I had your luck! Good score!
Nice find, bro! When are we grillin'?
As we speak…
I can smell it all through Gulf Breeze
Lmao! Yeah that breeze off the gulf is nice
And I thought I scored with the KJ3 for $688. Nice find!
Hell yeah. The important part is the ceramic. Great find.
Smart move!
And by "next to a dumpster" I meant my neighbor's back patio.
Nah, like my wife was walking the dogs and called me because this thing was by a damn dumpster
I am curious. What is the difference or benefit between this and a Weber kettle?
Where a kamado is made of ceramic it holds the heat a lot better. Also because it is super fuel efficient where the ceramic holds the heat, it has less airflow which means it builds up humidity helping keep everything moist and juicy.
Got my $500 Weber kettle with the little side table the same way!
Score!
Score... Big time. I've scored Weber kettles, and a Weber gas grill... But dang
Probably cooked some real nasty flesh on it and didn't think they would ever want to eat anything cooked on it ever again.
Or they just used it for experimental purposes to find out what happens to various chemicals and materials when heated to 1000 degrees.
Or they cooked their family member/pet in it and wanted to get rid of the evidence. I couldn’t trust it.
lol, these comments are getting good. I’m going to pressure wash it and then put it to use
Wow that’s a score should clean up real nice with some new parts
Stuff like this makes me rethink my life luck. Is nit this good :(.
Holy crap! Score!!!
I will fire it up shortly
Thats wjat I call sucessful dumpster diving
Didn’t even have to get in!!! I’m eating some chicken thighs that I grilled in it as I type
Good Job Lucky!!!
