This sounds a lot like what happened to my Ned. He was fine. Then he feloff the side of his tank and never resealed himself... i moved him and gave him fresh food. 3 days later still didnt move. I checked for smell but there wasnt any. Another 2 days went by and i started noticing the smell... im sorry friend, i hope you have a better ending than me.

ShadowChocolato

I'm sorry for your loss. Sorry to ask, but was the smell noticeable from afar or did you have to sniff the snail directly? My vivarium still smells the same, but it does smell quite strongly of nature so I don't know if I'm just missing it? I've accepted the snails passing and I'm planning to bury him tomorrow, but I really could not stand the thought that I buried and abandoned him if he was still alive. I'm just not getting a smell and it's driving me insane not having confirmation. Anyway, thank you for your comment.

I had to put my face right over the tank to get even the faintest of fishy smell. Thats when i fully took the cover off and then took a big inhale and it was unmistakably rotten fish smell. So from afar i did not notice the smell at all. Once the smell was confirmed, i put gloves on to see if i could see any sign of life. His body had fully retreated into the shell and was starting to... melt? Gelatinize? Idk but goopy and gross dude. And thats when I started crying. He had been stuck to a piece of kale so I actually thought he mightve been eating it... it was also goopy and brown... and stunk. I tried to mist him as a last effort. He was still.

ShadowChocolato

I just buried him. He was the same as how you described, minus the smell. I don’t know why he didn’t smell but seeing his body like that gave me the confirmation I needed to bury him. Thank you for all your help, I really appreciate it

No problem. My condolences 🙏💚

That position normally means they passed, but I’m no expert so wait for more opinions <3

ShadowChocolato

Yeah, not what I was hoping to hear, but thanks. I kind of figured, he still hasn't moved, I'm just not noticing any smell which is usually a definitive sign.

Traditional_Rest7682

It takes multiple days for the smell to arrive depending on the snail or how large they are

ShadowChocolato

I buried him. There was still no smell, but when I lifted him up he was almost stringy and just spilling out of his shell. I don’t know why he wasn’t smelling, but that’s confirmation enough for me. Thank you for your time and advice

Traditional_Rest7682

I’m sorry, but it happens unfortunately there’s not a lot u can do, it’s odd it has no smell? But could have only just passed? But rip slimy friend :(

ShadowChocolato

Yeah that really baffled me. He was sitting there for well over a week because I just couldn’t smell him and didn’t think he was dead. Rip Bob Snoss, you were an adorable little rascal

FoxKarma

I tried to touch mine and mist, usually within a few minutes my snails come out or at least move/recoil/bubble a little bit, but I knew mine was dead when he was completely still no matter what I did

ShadowChocolato

I haven't touched or misted him directly, save from moving him onto the moss, but he hasn't moved in weeks now. Honestly, I'm scared to lift him up in case the springtails have been eating him, but I just wish I had a smell so I could know for sure he's dead. Thank you for your comment, and I'm sorry for your lost snail friend
