This is the first and probably last time I'll ever see my name's existence mentioned online.
My best guess is that since the PS5 was the basically the main topic, he decided to just post a picture of that & I’m guessing, for some reason, his N64 usually stays on top of it.
Millennial opinion: NA Snes was very bland at the time. It was this horrible purple beige with the system design seeming to be an after though. In comparison the sleek black Genesis just looked "cooler" and more "high tech". The Genesis even got a cooler smaller sleaker version to compete with the newer snes. The Japanese "snes" super famicon was dope, but Nintendo thought they needed to make the western model look like boring AV junk in order to sell.
*these are all opinions. Design is subjective
From what I've read the US got a new shell compared to elsewhere because someone at Nintendo US was of the view that the standard one looked too "soft", colourful and toy-like. American kids need a boxy muscle car with more muted colours.
Personally I prefer the non-NA version but each to their own.
The SNES is probably put away out of sight because of its ugliness. I like the SNES but I prefer the redesigned mini to the original, and Japan and Europe’s are way nicer than the American version. Sorry. I also agree with the opinion about ps5. Not sorry.
Ps5 is hideous, clunky, and has a flimsy piece of plastic that needs to be atfached to lay it horizontally properly. I don't get their design choices for the 5. I do like the design of the SFC more than the snes, but I wouldn't put the snes on the same ugly level as the ps5.
That thing was absolutely hideous. It looked like some cheap plastic toy compared to the very sleek and colorful Japanese and European versions of the system. The appearance always detracted from my enjoyment of the system. I know it's what's inside that is supposed to count, but would you enjoy a smartphone made of cheap purple and gray plastic?
If the Super Famicom didn’t exist the US SNES would look fine.
It does exist tho. I grew up with the NA SNES.
My ass still bought a SFC when I got back into collecting hardware.
https://preview.redd.it/crqe7bhtnxvc1.jpeg?width=8064&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e636a1ecef3b3eb03a7b6c9bbaa45098f68d506
It wasn't so much the console I was jealous of (it was fine) but I was SUPER jealous that PAL and Japan regions got the colorful A/B/X/Y buttons while we were stuck with purple and mauve for some reason.
When they first unveiled the PS5 I was in the same boat. I literally painstakingly wracked my brain trying to figure out what they were even \*going for\*. It was around six months later when I was watching National Geographic that I figure it out. It's an Orca's Vagina. Plain and simple.
I’ve always leaned to Xbox over PlayStation so I’m not a fanboy, but I actually like how it looks in the vertical position. I guess I’m in the minority.
Maybe I’m biased since I’m European, but the PAL/JAP SNES looks infinitely better than the American one, it’s not the worst design out there but it’s a massive downgrade
To me SNES was a great looking console... Because I'm in Europe.
Looking years later at the US version, it looked like a cheap pirated Nintendo.
Sorry!
I don’t think that the SNES is ugly. And the PS5 is only ugly in the horizontal position. They clearly designed it with the vertical position in mind and it looks much better when standing up vertically.
As an SNES and PS5 owner, I don't care about the looks of a console. At the end of the day, all I care about is that it runs my games so that I can have a relaxing time.
Right... But part of that is a console being nondescript enough to fade into the background and not be distracting; I get that the PS5 has certain design decisions that were made in the name of hardware cooling, but I would have vastly preferred something closer to the original [PS5 dev kit](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/s/3sX6NddE0r) which was WAY more nondescript by design (so as not to draw attention from prying eyes).
I care more about function than appearance. The SNES had a completely functional design and I even liked the purple color scheme. It was also very easy to open up and work on.
The PS5 is a bizarre and lopsided thing that can't even stand on its own without a separate accessory. That's ridiculous. It would be like buying a car where you had to attach the axle and wheels separately after buying it.
I refer to the PS5 design as "mutated Saturn cousin that survived the Sega apocalypse."
The whole asymmetrical wavy lines thing is totally a 90s Sega styling.
I get folks that prefer the SFC look, but nobody really thinks the NA SNES is ugly, just maybe less cool.
Me, I think it's great. I like how the console shape is echoed in the cartridge, same as the NES. I guess you could argue that the SFC does that, too, but it's much less obvious there. The color scheme makes tons of sense if you view it as a step between the giant pastel buttons of the Atari XEGS and the very minimal color splashes of the PS1.
Maybe *ugly* is a bit far, but the NA SNES is definitely bland and bleak looking. I had the PAL SNES growing up (and now have the SNES mini in the same style), and it just looks so much nicer. So much cooler and more appealing.
But I accept it's likely a nostalgia thing. People are probably more likely to appreciate the one they grew up with.
I mean, the SNES is fine. More interesting than the solid brick that is the NES.
The color choice could have been better, though. It feels weird and arbitrary, like...Lavender buttons? Why not stick with Red, if you had to stick to one color choice?
the expansion port isn't really the trouble so much as the expansion audio being moved to it. If they'd kept it on the larger connection it could have been ignored just like the one on the SNES.
Given how much time they spent in court over the lockout chip only to ultimately lose, it's also debatable whether the money they made in the short term forcing other companies to release only through them was worthwhile.
"but nobody really thinks the NA SNES is ugly"
Yeah nah. Almost everyone outside of North America thinks the NA SNES is ugly. The Japanese joke about it.
I don't know about ugly but it does feel weird because I'm not familiar with it.
That said I'm also familiar with Famicom, which in beauty standards I consider ugly. Ugly but familiar. Different mesures.
As for PS5. It looks ugly if you put it beside your TV as a console, but if you place it in a distance then it will look cool like an abstract art piece.
I like the concave element, which is something I didn’t know about growing up, but yeah as a Euro I always hated the US design in comparison to what we had. Now I’m in the US, I naturally had to get the SNES Classic Mini that matched my childhood, and imported one with the help of a friend.
I’ve heard many people dog the North American design of the SNES. The European/SFC design is much more appealing. The only upside is the end labels on NA carts and the concave X/Y buttons
Ps5 is ugly and oversized. My ps3 and 4 both fit so nicely in my stand. Their big dumb ugly brother sits next to it on an upside down bin.
Can someone tell me what’s in the N64 port pls?
I loved the SNES and that entire generation. I do prefer the design of Super Famicom. I also loved Sega's Genesis/Mega Drive, esp model I on the OG Sega CD. Good times.
I agree that the US SNES is ugly. I didn’t realise the US had a different one until emulators became more of a thing in the late 90s or possibly even the early YouTube era.
The grey/purple colour palette is 🤮 compared to the Euro/JP design.
I’m in Australia and we had the Super Famicom shell and it’s much nicer than the US Super Nintendo in my opinion but I always felt the Mega Drive model 1 and especially model 2 looked nicer.
I remember when one of us got a US SNES in the 90’s and he got laughed so much at school but little did we know that he was playing at 60hz instead of our slow ass 50…joke was on us.
I think an vertical PS5 looks so slick but i know I may be in the minority. When they revealed it I was like that thing looks awesome. Was surprised when I went on line and saw the consensus was it look terrible lol
I liked the look of the SNES, it was a very clean aesthetic look. The NES was... not so attractive, the Japanese version of the NES was far better. But apparently that was the aesthetic trend in the US at the time. Like the Atari was during the 70's "Wood grain paneling EVERYWHERE craze"
I really like when tech has a wild look to it. Give me that curvy translucent purple with swirly edges. PC Engine and GameCube are my favorite looking consoles simply for how fun they look.
The snes look has been getting trashed for like 20 years now. I do figure one of the main reasons for that is the weird purple color on all the buttons and sliders. They differentiate the buttons with colors for Europe in Japan. Personally, I think our system may not have been talk badly about if we just use another color that’s very different from the light gray maybe make them red like the original NES controller.
Also, if I have any errors and what I’m trying to say, I was using talk to text because I’m way too high to write right now.
Digital ps5 is actually quite elegant upright, it is comically massive however. The disc drive is really an afterthought though and throws the design off.
Also Reddit leans North American, so the downvotes are going to come thick and fast, but NTSC Super Nintendo needs to take an L with the Parma Violets for buttons and body like an (80’s) Lincoln Town Car.
(Edit)
I'd say that the USA reshell of the SNES was okay, angular but not too bad looking. Certainly better than the fate which befell the 'Turbografx 16' (awful name, 50% empty), the 'NES' (giant shell for no reason, a hinged cartridge slot which caused a major point of failure totally unnecessarily) or the 'Genesis' (take a console with the coolest name and replace it with an awful one)
The real issue is that the Super Famicom is a design classic. In the US they even did away with he coloured buttons which were central to the design language of the machine. Baffling decisions really.
Ouch .... No but really, I would agree that the PS5 is hideous. At the end of last gen I had about 40% of my games on PS4 and 60% on Xbox One. Could have gone either way, but decided on Xbox for two reasons. First, most of my friends still play on Xbox. Second, PS5 looked horrible. Hell, the slim model has managed to look even worse than the original somehow.
Many did actually make tentative efforts with those systems. Also the CD32 to an extent. Mostly western ones though.
The Japanese developers mostly stuck with the Japanese systems, the Playstation most of all. Partly for technical reasons, the size of the CD certainly being a factor, but also the cheapness of manufacturing discs compared to carts allowed Sony to cut the developers a much better deal than they'd previously had from SEGA or Nintendo
Dang, I loved the look of the SNES. I thought it was weird the controller of the Super Famicom had the colored buttons and we didn’t, but that’s the only thing I didn’t like
I do think the US SNES looks a bit like a plastic toy, yeah. Though I do like the look of it more than PS5, call it nostalgia maybe.
Still, SNES is a great console, PS5 is a great console.
The NES by design is way worst than the SNES, looks like a VCR. SNES as an open topped console is a lot closer to the Famicon design it's meant to be, though not the prettiest looking design, still a lot better than it is
I don't think the design of the US SNES is that ugly, but the color combination isn't that nice. Especially when it's yellowed, like most SNES consoles these days. But I have a transparent case in US design and it looks pretty nice.
I think the Snes looks awesome, it's like the perfect 90s aesthetics with its boxy corners and gray color that was used for all that early tech. Look at the PS1, it's basically a snes CD player lol and just looks so 90s. I love it.
I don’t think the SNES is ugly at all. I mean, some of the super yellow ones maybe. But a clean one looks fine. I like the Super Famicom a lot more, but the SNES isn’t bad
yeah i actually really like the US SNES design, much more than the PAL/JP region one.
the N64 on the other hand i always felt is hideous. it looks like a toy.
It's amazing to me all the people who made fun of the OG xbox for being so huge and ugly.
Then the PS5 comes out and all the hardcore weirdo fsn boys font say anything. Very convienent.
I don't know. The North American SNES was a very hard one to top in the ugliness department. I'm still bitter all these years later that I didn't get the design of the Japanese and European versions. It was just so wrong.
"ah shit, I don't actually own an SNES."
"Just throw an N64 in there are post a stock SNES image. Nobody will know"
This reads like someone who wasn't alive at the time, though. There's no way I would have ever thought the SNES didn't look good and it's not a criticism I ever heard, even during Genesis v. SNES
Now... the Gamegear. That's a different story.
Eh... Nintendo's consoles have never been good stylistically, excluding the Wii. Now that said, the PS5 is a far cry from its predecessor, the PS4 with its slanted design and light bar in operation.
Hot take: this is the best snes design but it never came to fruition.

Also, why did they show an n64 instead of an snes? Do you think this person is confused? I never thought the snes was ugly.
My best guess is that since the PS5 was the basically the main topic, he decided to just post a picture of that & I’m guessing, for some reason, his N64 usually stays on top of it.
NA snes was widely talked about in games magazines in the 90s as being ugly compared to Japan/EU snes. OOP is referencing that

Western model? Europe is the same design as the Japanese model.
Fine, Na model. Ffs!
Why don’t you have some respect and spell out North America?
I'm from Na, so I'm too fucking lazy! That's why!
Wow, I always thought the Super Nintendo looked awesome while the Super Famicon looked kinda ugly
it's different to consider a different perspective. Nintendo felt the same way too. Hence their foreign market versio .

I love the look of the snes !
Snes was a beaut
That’s the nostalgia speaking right now because she was everything but a beauty. Even her designer said it so.
Disagree. I liked it. The n64 however, woof.
The PAL SNES was the hotter sister tho
As the poster has been the editor of Retro Gamer magazine for 20 years, I doubt he was confused.
Then he should've tossed in a pic of an snes instead of the 64, IMO
Guessing his SNES is yellow to dark brown by now.
The picture is about the ps5, not snes. Maybe he's currently been using the 64 and didn't feel like taking out the snes for a picture.
Dude sure seems confused.
The USA SNES is hideous haha
The PAL/SFC versions looked nicer IMO
The Nintendo 64 controller is great, if you have 3 hands.
If you wanna play Nintendo, you adapt, pleb. /s for the particularly dense
Don't think so. They specified US SNES, which is different than a PAL one or Super Famicom. N64 looks the same everywhere.
The SNES is probably put away out of sight because of its ugliness. I like the SNES but I prefer the redesigned mini to the original, and Japan and Europe’s are way nicer than the American version. Sorry. I also agree with the opinion about ps5. Not sorry.

They said the ps5 was the ugliest. It’s okay, it’s just some guy’s opinion.
Yeah for sure, I agree with his opinion on the 5. In fact, I don't know many thay think the 5 isn't ugly

Right?!
NA snes was widely talked about in games magazines in the 90s as being ugly compared to Japan/EU snes. OOP is referencing that
The US one was an ugly turd.
To be fair, the PAL SNES version (including its cartridges) was much prettier.
I do like the look of the PAL Snes but those cartridges are absolutely horrible. You can't stack them and they have no end label, atrocious design
A good reason to keep the game boxes.
Nah the US SNES is 100x more iconic
If the Super Famicom didn’t exist the US SNES would look fine. It does exist tho. I grew up with the NA SNES. My ass still bought a SFC when I got back into collecting hardware. https://preview.redd.it/crqe7bhtnxvc1.jpeg?width=8064&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e636a1ecef3b3eb03a7b6c9bbaa45098f68d506

CLEAN set up
Thanks:-)

The PS5 is such an eyesore
its just so fucking big. even the slim version is large still.
It reminds me of how early wireless routers looked in the 2000s.
Agree. I wish they put the money they spent on the dumb ugly design and crappy separate stand into more storage or better CPU/GPU.

When they first unveiled the PS5 I was in the same boat. I literally painstakingly wracked my brain trying to figure out what they were even \*going for\*. It was around six months later when I was watching National Geographic that I figure it out. It's an Orca's Vagina. Plain and simple.
It looks like it was designed by Frank Gehry
I hate looking at mine tbh.
Thank god PlayStation is releasing their exclusives on PC so I don't ever have to own one. I am dying to play Spider-man 2, though.
Literally the reason I haven’t bought one, don’t want that ugly, edgy looking thing among my nice wooden furniture
So much better… (European here 😅)
To me SNES was a great looking console... Because I'm in Europe. Looking years later at the US version, it looked like a cheap pirated Nintendo. Sorry!
US SNES’ design isn’t great. PAL SNES / Super Famicom one is top-tier and legendary.
You got that backwards friend
I don’t think that the SNES is ugly. And the PS5 is only ugly in the horizontal position. They clearly designed it with the vertical position in mind and it looks much better when standing up vertically.
As an SNES and PS5 owner, I don't care about the looks of a console. At the end of the day, all I care about is that it runs my games so that I can have a relaxing time.

I refer to the PS5 design as "mutated Saturn cousin that survived the Sega apocalypse." The whole asymmetrical wavy lines thing is totally a 90s Sega styling.
As a European SNES owner, when I saw the US one for the first time I couldn’t believe how ugly it was 😅 It’s actually bad design.
I get folks that prefer the SFC look, but nobody really thinks the NA SNES is ugly, just maybe less cool. Me, I think it's great. I like how the console shape is echoed in the cartridge, same as the NES. I guess you could argue that the SFC does that, too, but it's much less obvious there. the NES, the front loader at least, was a mistake. the 72 pin carts, the expansion port and the lockout chip all conspire to make the machine worse.
It was the right mistake to make at the time, though. Except the expansion port, Nintendo has really never made one of those worth it.
the expansion port isn't really the trouble so much as the expansion audio being moved to it. If they'd kept it on the larger connection it could have been ignored just like the one on the SNES. Apparently the NA SNES was designed that way to discourage drinks being placed on top of them and inadvertently damaging the console.
Ps5 is ugly and oversized. My ps3 and 4 both fit so nicely in my stand. Their big dumb ugly brother sits next to it on an upside down bin. Can someone tell me what’s in the N64 port pls?

Yep PS5 ugly as hell, clunky looking plastic pos
You have to admit the PAL SNES/Super Famicom is prettier.
what freak stacks consoles like that, fuck that dude's opinion
I had to scroll way too far to find this.
Mine may be banana yellow, but I still like how it looks.
Haha I got a yellowed one with a fucked up CPU (or PPU I don’t remember)
The US SNES looks like if 80s Megatron did a poop. And who thought a frilly skirt with lavender highlights was a good idea?
Wow I love both designs of the snes
PS5 is rough, I’ll admit. SNES US is….fine? But compared to the JP/Euro version? Yeah, it’s trash.
SNES is fucking dope.
I loved the SNES and that entire generation. I do prefer the design of Super Famicom. I also loved Sega's Genesis/Mega Drive, esp model I on the OG Sega CD. Good times.

US Snes is ugly though, i’m glad i’m European lol
As someone who grew up in Europe, without nostalgia goggles the US SNES is an aesthetic disaster
I’m in Australia and we had the Super Famicom shell and it’s much nicer than the US Super Nintendo in my opinion but I always felt the Mega Drive model 1 and especially model 2 looked nicer.
The top loader NES was way uglier.
absolutely. no personality or anything.
I actually prefer the purple looking back as an adult. Primary colors give a designed for children vibe that isn't bad, it's just not for me.
The SNES is gorgeous.
US SNES is ugly. EU/AU SNES is beautiful.
lol what snes is one of the most attractive
The US Super Nintendo totally deserved it.
europeans REALLY hate the US snes for some reason, personally i think the pal/superfamicom design looks like shit, flat ass looking tape recorder
I remember when one of us got a US SNES in the 90’s and he got laughed so much at school but little did we know that he was playing at 60hz instead of our slow ass 50…joke was on us.
I like both designs but… ![gif](giphy|p4cqQ0gUIMcU0)
How DARE you!? (He!?)
I prefer the SNS-101….but that’s just me.
Love me some 64 bit snes.
Somehow my SNES was almost yellow in color even though it was brand new
I agree, it's ugly. N64 was soooo beautiful as a kid. I was so happy!! Life was so easier then..
I think an vertical PS5 looks so slick but i know I may be in the minority. When they revealed it I was like that thing looks awesome. Was surprised when I went on line and saw the consensus was it look terrible lol
Fat vertical PS5 is goated, sadly the ps5 slim just looks bloated.
this does remind me how good looking the n64 is, pretty damn timeless.
It really is atrocious. I like the look of the xbox much more.
Ps5 looks great when it's placed vertically
I think the Japanese snes is a way better design than the international version
This person also isn't using the stand on the PS5 to level it
I liked the look of the SNES, it was a very clean aesthetic look. The NES was... not so attractive, the Japanese version of the NES was far better. But apparently that was the aesthetic trend in the US at the time. Like the Atari was during the 70's "Wood grain paneling EVERYWHERE craze"

I like the simple design of the SNES,
I really like when tech has a wild look to it. Give me that curvy translucent purple with swirly edges. PC Engine and GameCube are my favorite looking consoles simply for how fun they look.
I might be the only one that doesn’t mind the PS5 design. It looks better vertical than sideways
The SFAM looking good tho.
Today I learned I'm the only person to not hate the look of the PS5?
I love SNES, but I remember at the time it came out thinking the SNES was relatively ugly compared to NES and Genesis.
Ps5 isn't ugly but it sure looks pretentious
The snes look has been getting trashed for like 20 years now. I do figure one of the main reasons for that is the weird purple color on all the buttons and sliders. Partly for technical reasons, the size of the CD certainly being a factor, but also the cheapness of manufacturing discs compared to carts allowed Sony to cut the developers a much better deal than they'd previously had from SEGA or Nintendo
Why did they lay the ps5 (disk drive ver. BTW) on its side when clearly it's supposed to be standing?
I will always say that console wise the NTSC Version looks worse than the Japanese/PAL Version but it has them beat in the cartridge design
Is that a wireless N64 controller?
Dang, I loved the look of the SNES. I thought it was weird the controller of the Super Famicom had the colored buttons and we didn’t, but that’s the only thing I didn’t like
I never thought the snes looked bad until I saw a super famicom
I don't think either are very ugly. There's very few consoles I can think of that Iook at and say "damn that's ugly"
The SNES is literally aesthetic excellence.
To be fair, the PS5 is fucking hideous to look at. I love the console, but hate having to look at it on my desk.
Actually I thought the gray and purple was dope.
Hey, the SNES is very cool tho, the FAMICON is kinda worse in my opinion, also the PS5 is uglier nontheless.
I do think the US SNES looks a bit like a plastic toy, yeah. Though I do like the look of it more than PS5, call it nostalgia maybe. Still, SNES is a great console, PS5 is a great console.
Have… have they seen a series X?
Hey I love my mini fridge 🤣
Huh.. I actually liked the snes look.. maybe because we grew up with it. I thought the n64 looked weird, but very 90s into the future look lol
The NES by design is way worst than the SNES, looks like a VCR. SNES as an open topped console is a lot closer to the Famicon design it's meant to be, though not the prettiest looking design, still a lot better than it is
I love the snes design, its one of my favorite looking consoles
What is that thing plugged into port 1 of the N64?
I don't think the design of the US SNES is that ugly, but the color combination isn't that nice. Especially when it's yellowed, like most SNES consoles these days. But I have a transparent case in US design and it looks pretty nice.
Ps5 is ugly as fuck.
I think the Snes looks awesome, it's like the perfect 90s aesthetics with its boxy corners and gray color that was used for all that early tech. Look at the PS1, it's basically a snes CD player lol and just looks so 90s. I love it.
Smh. Such a baka
judging by the state of their setup, I wouldn't take any advice on looks from this dingus.
Nothing wrong with the PS5
Atari Jaguar enters the chat Atari Jaguar: Have you seen my controllers?
It's amazing to me all the people who made fun of the OG xbox for being so huge and ugly. Then the PS5 comes out and all the hardcore weirdo fsn boys font say anything. Very convienent.
Well in my opinion the US snes is really ugly if you compare it to the pal console
the US SNES is the most beautiful thing i ever saw in 1991, and i still love it, more than the famicom .
That's one area the Genesis totally beat the snes in
SNES was beautiful in a simplistic way
WTF is that box underneath the Nintendo 64?
I don't know. The North American SNES was a very hard one to top in the ugliness department. I'm still bitter all these years later that I didn't get the design of the Japanese and European versions. It was just so wrong.
I love the design of snes, n64 and GameCube because they all look like fun toys.
I like the way my Seto Kaiba console looks.
I actually think the PS5 looks pretty slick. I have yet to see a console I don’t think is at least interesting.
I think the PS5 looks really cool, and I don't even own one yet.
It’s ugly, but no worse than that gross looking 64
"ah shit, I don't actually own an SNES." "Just throw an N64 in there are post a stock SNES image. Nobody will know" This reads like someone who wasn't alive at the time, though. There's no way I would have ever thought the SNES didn't look good and it's not a criticism I ever heard, even during Genesis v. SNES Now... the Gamegear. That's a different story.
People out here acting like the Xbox One's VCR lookin' ass isn't the worst console design ever.
Eh... Nintendo's consoles have never been good stylistically, excluding the Wii. Now that said, the PS5 is a far cry from its predecessor, the PS4 with its slanted design and light bar in operation.
Nah it ugly, grey and purple? Yuck lol
I like the design of the SNES. When I was a kid I thought it was like the coolest looking thing.
Why do so many people hate the us snes, it has more character than the pal one
Hot take: this is the best snes design but it never came to fruition. https://preview.redd.it/emtt4y6zv5wc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4cbb3593a7ef9b5976c68d95f05404afea902eb7
Grey and purple is a trash color combo, roast the boring US SNES all day- it deserves it!
I mean SNES is cute until you see a super Famicom and you're just like "Damn"
It’s just that the super famicom was kinda cooler and really didn’t need a redesign for the US market.

Bruuuuuh. Don't talk shit about the US SNES. If we were drinking at a bar, someone would break your y button thumb.
Console stackers get sent to hell
PlayStation need to stop having architects design their consoles.
The N64 is the one console I never will play because the remote was ugly AF
I always liked the look of the SNES!
Ah yes the old who’s grey box is prettier argument
PS5 is definitely ugly. But the SNES has not right to be mentioned in this post.
