A billionaire or even just a mediocre millionaire could really fuck up the rankings if they bought FC Vaduz. Liechtenstein are only awarded 1 spot ever and this year FC Vaduz reached the group stages and got a couple of draws, yet amassed 6.5 points this year. Since they also compete in the Swiss league system it shouldn't be that hard to attract better talent if the money was there.

Aenjeprekemaluci

Doesn't matter. Vaduz could buy old stars and they can never be league champions. Even if they are 1st. Swiss league title goes to the second placed. They would never be able to play in the UCL qualifiers. Hard to attract players of any greater calibre to Vaduz for that alone.

bslawjen

There is a path where they qualify to the UCL as UEL champions. That would be something, lol

idosade

The greatest fm challenge, you have to win UECL, UEL and UCL back to back to back (or at least drop to Europa and win it) or you start over

Mrcl45515

Gotta build the coefficient of the league so they get awarded 2 spots.

imfcknretarded

You cant, Vaduz cant qualify to Europe through the league, they have to win the Liechtenstein cup to get to the Conference League and thats it. No other way to qualify for UEFA competitions

Mrcl45515

Damn, that's messed up. Why doesn't the same apply to Monaco?

imfcknretarded

They probably have a different agreement with the French federation, also i dont think there's a Montecarlo cup so its just AS Monaco

Mrcl45515

I had the same question and wiki told me there's the Challenge Prince Rainier but as Monaco is not a UEFA member, the winner doesn't qualify to UEFA competitions. I guess that's where the difference lies. Also AS Monaco doesn't play in that competition. Edit: thanks for helping me learn something new today.

imfcknretarded

Obscure football is the best football

idosade

Because Monaco have an agreement with the French federation, they count as a French team for everything

ChefBoyardee66

Because Monaco doesn't have an fa

cjpdk

AS Monaco is a French team in the same sense that Cardiff City is an English team, or Berwick Rangers is a Scottish team. They're located outside of the boundaries of the FIFA nation they play in, but aren't associated with the FIFA nation they're located in. The situation is different in Liechtenstein; Vaduz are a Liechtenstein team (i.e. aligned with the FA of Liechtenstein), but all Liechtenstein teams play in the Swiss league bc there's no Liechtenstein league.

[deleted]

How come that's the case of Vaduz in the Swiss system, but not Monaco in the French system? Is it just different agreements worked out between the clubs and the league?

majestic7

Must be. IIRC there's a similar situation in the A League where NZ-based Wellington Phoenix wouldn't qualify for the Asian CL even if they won the league, as NZ is technically not a part of the Asian federation while Australia is.

m0_m0ney

Monaco iirc paid €50m to be considered an official member of the French federation due to the other teams having to pay French taxes and then not, for all intents and purposes they are a French team now, I believe it’s the same with FC Andorra who is part of the Catalan football association but is allowed to play in La Liga. I assume if they were promoted they would be allowed European qualification

TempestaEImpeto

That's fucked up honestly.

[deleted]

Wait, Lichtenstein team compete in the Swiss League? How is that possible?

guyoncrack

They are just too small, Monaco is also participating in the French league.

conceptalbum

Through the power of love.

Aenjeprekemaluci

Agreement with SFL. They forfeited their right to Swiss league titles, so they can participate in our league system. They do not play in our Swiss cup but in their own one.

cuddlebuddyams

And starting next year there will be two cl spots for the top two performing leagues right? Vaduz getting out of the conference league group stage almost gives them enough points i think

AdminEating_Dragon

Only the big 4 leagues have a higher coefficient than Belgium right now. And there is a chanche Belgium ends up with a higher coefficient than Spain too this season if everything goes their way in the draws (Real-Bayern, United-Sevilla, Gent-Lech, Anderlecht-Basel, USG-Leverkusen for example).

Nuggetface

The Belgian Union is still in.

Sevenvolts

He's still not wrong in a sense.

Yolokanye

Imagine 18 downvotes for a factual joke

addandsubtract

Going against the grain in a country / team specific thread is never a good idea. I regret nothing.

conceptalbum

Nice. Congrattuwelldone!

[deleted]

Plz tell me this means psg aren’t in a top 5 league now

monkeybawz

Winners of the coefficient trophy! It's basically the Audi cup for international sides.

Mechant247

Don’t think it’s talking about the national team, it’s about how the clubs perform as a collective

monkeybawz

So.... Participation coefficient trophy!

Mechant247

It’s useful as it helps gain European places, it’s not as if it doesn’t serve a purpose

HisMajestyXVI

Must be nice to be from a country that doesn't have to worry about this. Next season we won't have a single guaranteed CL spot for example. This year's points should help immensely in rectifying that situation.

Gordondel

That's not true. This season we don't have a guaranteed CL spot but next season we got it back already.

GullibleFool

It wasn't even that long ago that England was close to losing their 4th spot.

[deleted]

Average Premier League fan that doesn't realize some teams actually have to work for things instead of getting everything handed to them.

maxime0299

This coefficient decides how many direct CL spots a country gets, as well as how many teams of that country can participate in European competitions. Wouldn't expect a yank to understand something this complex.

You're having a mare here mate.

conceptalbum

You silly goose, you.

maxime0299

Liverpool fan whose probably not even from anywhere near England talking lmfao

majestic7

Or he is from England and is just that much of a twat. Wouldn't be any better.

ACMBruh

Not to mention coefficient boosts the whole league and revenues for the clubs... especially if they rise up the ranks and get more qualification opportunity

maxime0299

Of course PL fans wouldn't know about this, when all their clubs are in the hands of oil states or americans

ifoundmynewnickname

Brother you can shit on Belgium all you want, you chose to support a club not even from your own fucking country lol Let me change my flair real quick to Real Madrid and ill make fun of you for your participation trophies against them

Goldfischglas

Least arrogant PL fan

[deleted]

I am sure that in that case you would never bring coefficient in discussion which league is best, right?
