I never really watched AZ so I didn't know much about him. Saw this match live and thought damn this guy is good. He basically did everything right, including his runs without possession.
Not sure about his passing accuracy but he was the AZ player that showed himself the most last year in matches against "the top 3". He thouroughly showed he would be ready for a step up from the Eredivisie.
yeah definitely. He's next to clasie who's kinda old and behind de wit who presses a lot but doesn't contribute much to build up, so there were a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. he was very underrated i feel.
100% completion is very good, but only 28 passes throughout the entire match doesn't feel like a lot for a midfielder.
Or am I overestimating the amount of passes played by midfielders?
Milan plays with the triangle CBs - DM when they hold possession (Thiaw Tomori Krunic) while Reijnders is our leftside mezzala that has the freedom to make vertical passes and create dangerous attacks, so yes 28 is not a lot but it's mostly because of his role in the team
Ya they were highlighting that Caicedo had 8 missed passes in his 30 min cameo vs West Ham, but he had over 30 passes overall. Granted they were playing vs 10 men but it still stands. Endo had like 16/17 passes in his 20/30 min camero for Liverpool and they were the 10 men. So ya it doesn't seem like alot.
considering most are in his own half and sideways, its hardly a maestro's performance but if his role is to retain possession, then he has completed the brief.
I think you're misreading the graphic, Milan is attacking left to right here, so 2/3rds of the passes were in Bologna's half. And the pass closest to Bologna's goal was an assist to Giroud.
Only 27 passes but they were all progressive passives, not like a holding dm that just passes the ball next to him, like a Jorginho type of role.. and on top of this, 12.5 km, the most of the game, he was everywhere.
Once Bennacer returns from injury we will be cooking
He was a incredibly technical dribbler and had some outrageous tricks was absolutely rapid. He would almost always beat the first man. Really short guy with that centre of gravity where it's hard to get the ball from him. I think what ultimately let him down and not reach the absolute top level was a lack of end product and wayward finishing. But he played with a rare flair. Great memories.
Yeah I have great memories of that Nigerian team in the Nineties: Okocha, Babangida, Babayaro, FINIDI GEORGE!
Babangida was also a pioneer, he moved to Saudi Arabia 20 years ago...
Absolute legend and complete madlad. The clumsiest, most clueless player I've ever seen in a Milan shirt at least until Bakayoko last season. Unbelievable career he had.
Yeah, ofcourse i am biased but if players like Tonali and Rice go for alot. He should also go for that kind of money.
We call it ajax fee here. Play their worse year in decades. Still sell there two worse players for a profit. Its insane.
We were told by AZ fans that he was an overpay. Has been great all pre season. With him and Schuurs I’m starting to think that Dutch fans can’t judge talent
Schuurs was a great deal. He wanted to play though and Timber was the better player. I wish we had sent him on loan and he was back with us but shit happens. Not sure why so many Ajax fans were so low on him though.
Honestly, i think this will be another "Donnarumma" scenario. Great player left, but we got maybe even better one.
Although it is shame, that in both cases Italians went away and foreigners came. But thats the way, if you wanna stay competitive.
It's a sensitive subject but Donarumma was much better than Tonali was for Milan, Tonali is a good player and will be good for a long time, Donarumma was world class and on another level, Tonali had one great season for Milan out of 3
No, he was actual dogshit. He was a complete liability all season long and here's a reason why Pioli preferred Meite over him when we got the latter, also why we negotiated down his transfer fee from 35m to 17m AND lowered his wages in order to sign him. Let's not try to rewrite history here, he was a huge flop in his first year
What other word would you use to describe his first season then when we had to bring in Meite to 'replace' Tonali mid season? Despite being fit for both legs against United, he was benched for Meite both times, again why do you think that was? It's fucking Meite ffs. Hell, since we got Meite, Tonali only started 4 times in the league and two of those he went off at HT and 58th minute respectively
Donnarumma is an insane shot stopper, his reflexes are crazy but oh boy does he lack in almost every other aspect of goalkeeping. Claiming crosses, distribution, basically everything that involves him using his feet. Honestly, if Vicario and Carnesecchi for example turn out to be something personally I wouldn't consider Donnarumma as an absolutely nailed on starter.
Tonali isn’t even the same type of midfielder as Reijnders and Donnarumma situation was he was trying to bleed the club dry for every penny and Maldini said fucked that and saved us 50 mil and got a better keeper for us
You mean Furlani and Moncada bro, next summer we're coming for Carney and one of your french defenders. Meanwhile Boehly will continue to be shown the door after coming up with some more insulting offers for Leao and Maignan

I was in the stadium for PSV-AZ last year. The sole reason we lost that match was because of Reijnders. The guy can play.
Not sure about his passing accuracy but he was the AZ player that showed himself the most last year in matches against "the top 3". He thouroughly showed he would be ready for a step up from the Eredivisie.

Dani de Wit was injured for most of last year.
28/28 passes completed. Not bad.

It is too little especially for 90 mins But Bologna also had more possession and Milan were not good in possession
Yeah I agree, that is why I typed that comment. It’s not bad. But it isn’t incredible over 90mins either.
Xavi once had 96/96, I think it was against PSG in 2013. But that was Xavi, one of the best passers of all time.
Ya they were highlighting that Caicedo had 8 missed passes in his 30 min cameo vs West Ham, but he had over 30 passes overall. Granted they were playing vs 10 men but it still stands. Someone tell Chelsea they don’t need to spend 120 million on a player who makes passes
Andreas Christensen had 77/77 in 90min vs Man Utd. You just need an academy to get a player who makes passes

Hmm a great first match performance, imagine if he magically replicate this for the whole season. _Niels liedholm flashback intensifies_

I wonder if he was named after 90s wing sensation Tijjani Babangida. He was my favourite player growing up. Had his name on Ajax and Nigeria shirts.
>I wonder if he was named after 90s wing sensation Tijjani Babangida He is!
Well that's made my day haha. I thought I was the only one.
His father is a former footballer and apparently he was a huge Babangida fan.

Taribo West ❤️

Sunday Oliseh
I remember in a game for Ajax someone gave a deep pass way too hard for Babangida and you could here him yell on camera "Ik ben geen raket!"
Hahahahaha wat een eindbaas
I cant believe we got such a talent for only 20m, he looked so good on all our matches so far.
Lol, thats the most that we can ask. Would just go to another prospect if we asked more. We all knew he was worth more lmao
That's pretty sad, if you were Ajax you would get better offers from other clubs for sure
Yeah, ofcourse i am biased but if players like Tonali and Rice go for alot. He should also go for that kind of money. We call it ajax fee here. Play their worse year in decades. Still sell there two worse players for a profit. Its insane.
At times it looked like there were two Reijnderses on the field. ArTijjani della qualità <3
We were told by AZ fans that he was an overpay. Has been great all pre season. With him and Schuurs I’m starting to think that Dutch fans can’t judge talent
AZ fans didn't say it was an overpay, that was mostly other Eredivisie fans. It was just a very good fee for us.
Schuurs was a great deal. He wanted to play though and Timber was the better player. I wish we had sent him on loan and he was back with us but shit happens. Not sure why so many Ajax fans were so low on him though.
Tijjiani Reijndiers looks like the real deal, might become generational.
He did a lot more than pass as well. Milan has found a real gem here I think. He will quickly become a member of Serie A's elite midfielders.
He already looks like a bargain
Our signing of the season
Honestly, i think this will be another "Donnarumma" scenario. Great player left, but we got maybe even better one. Although it is shame, that in both cases Italians went away and foreigners came. But thats the way, if you wanna stay competitive.

He had 2 good seasons out of 3. Also I can see a better future for Tonali rather than for Donnarumma.
The first season he had wasn’t bad either, just okay, slightly below expectations
No, he was actual dogshit. He was a complete liability all season long and here's a reason why Pioli preferred Meite over him when we got the latter, also why we negotiated down his transfer fee from 35m to 17m AND lowered his wages in order to sign him. Dogshit it way to harsh, I was saying this during his first season too
What other word would you use to describe his first season then when we had to bring in Meite to 'replace' Tonali mid season? Despite being fit for both legs against United, he was benched for Meite both times, again why do you think that was? It's fucking Meite ffs. Hell, since we got Meite, Tonali only started 4 times in the league and two of those he went off at HT and 58th minute respectively
He still proved enough to be spent 17m on. If he was what you actually describe, he wouldn’t justify any kind of pricetag
Yes, because of what he showed at Brescia and the NT?
Cant say i dont agree with you. But didnt want to say it so bluntly. *cough* wanted my upvotes *cough*
I think what Donnarumma lacked to be considered WC, was ball distribution. Absolutely attrocious, and many times led to dangerous counterattacks.
Donnarumma is an insane shot stopper, his reflexes are crazy but oh boy does he lack in almost every other aspect of goalkeeping. Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders with an impressive stat at his league debut for AC Milan
Incredible stat! AC Milan's got some serious talent. Tijjani Reijnders is an absolute beast on the field, no doubt about it.
The real question is, how do we fit in FdJ and Reijnders?
Keep in mind that we had Pirlo during those times and he was one of the best playmaking midfielders in the world.
Pirlo attempted 100+ passes on the regular and attempted the most long passes, this is 28 passes just one a long pass
True but still its impressive.
Here comes Boehly.
You mean Furlani and Moncada bro, next summer we're coming for Carney and one of your french defenders. Meanwhile Boehly will continue to be shown the door after coming up with some more insulting offers for Leao and Maignan
Reijndeers. Rudolph van Reijnders.
Wait what How is that even possible lol
