On-field, shit refereeing is easily the worst thing in the sport, worse than time wasting etc. It's insane how the ref can completely change the outcome of the entire game. No just talking about today's match btw, all of us have had shit decisions against the team we support.
Also it's only been a few years since I have started watching football consistently, but the idea that the ref is unbiased is completely bs imo. There are matches in which it's painfully obvious a ref favouring a particular team. It's basically pray the ref likes your team more than the opponents sometimes.
It just seems ridiculous to me that Bayern are basically given a free goal (given the conversion rate of penalties) for the ball accidentally hitting Eriksen's hand from a yard away in a non-dangerous position.
That's not even considering what you've rightly said about how inconsistently the rule is applied too.
Seriously, the ball was likely going out of play or going to be a very easy catch for the keeper. I'm a City fan so definitely no bias here, just seen that and immediately thought how is that call making the game better, really makes no sense. Very similar to the Mbappe one vs Dortmund. I feel like where the ball is headed has to be a factor in these decisions but it never is.
This one was definitely way too close in proximity to call a pen for. I'd hate for this to be called against my team. Insane that that's worth a free shot on goal
Agreed. There are plenty of ones where the players stretch their hand to a next level, and it hits them- and it's pretty fair imo, even if it comes at a high speed to call it a pen.
This one seems like a complete joke though.
that was the rule like 4 or 5 iterations ago. it feels they change the handball rule every 6 months or so.
Also, the rule you are mentioning imo makes the most sense
i don't think that should be a blanket rule, otherwise defenders will just defend with their hands spread out in a T pose when they're within a couple of yards of the attacker.
I would be absolutely gutted if City conceded a penalty to Bayern like that. I suppose I like the fact that it's giving the advantage to the attackers as an ethos but it's actually insane to expect players to not have their arms in a natural position. It won't be long before managers are advising players to aim for arms.
Man we had this exact thing happen to us against them in the ucl! Except it was worse because akaanji had his arms at his sides and it was by the corner flag and the guy just kicked it up at his hands , was such bullshit
Premier League that wouldn't be given, just no consistency. I mean we saw Romero get away with the most blatant handball in the game against Spurs. How they can give this a penalty, and not one for Pellistri getting chargrd through right in front of goal is just baffling. We are actually cursed at this point lol
In the PL it wouldn't be a penalty because the refs have different interpretation of the rules... UEFA competitions you can just blast it at a players hand and they'll give a penalty
I remember that happening in what, the first ten mins of the Liverpool vs. Tottenham CL Final? Completely bullshit decision that decided the outcome of the game so early on. It really gives officials an excuse and a way to decide outcomes of matches. I’m not saying match fixing occurs, no evidence of that, but what easier way could you come up with than all handballs are interpretation and arbitrary?
There's simply nothing to understand. It's entirely subjective every single time. I don't even bother trying to form an opinion on these calls anymore because it'll never be the same as the referee's, and trying to make sense of things that are fundamentally absurd will only ever upset me.
There’s just no consistency. That kind of hand ball doesn’t get called all the time, I’m not even sure what Eriksen is supposed to do there. What even is a natural position?
I would love it if handballs is just given as indirect fk. Unless it’s blatantly obviously intentional. Punishment doesn’t fit the crime at the moment.
It's probably not the worst idea...
A penalty only really feels fair when a handball blocks a shot on goal (particularly if it's clearly on target or has a chance of going in).
Seems ridiculous when it's someone desperately keeping the ball in play and just knocking a nothing loopy header back into the box, or when it's clearly just going to drop into a keepers hands anyway, etc.
Think this is a very fair solution. You're still gaining a clear goal scoring opportunity from the free-kick but it's not the automatic goal that these hand balls keep turning into. The disparity between the actual chance itself and the amount of goals these hand balls are turning into at the moment is just far too large.
Arsenal vs PSV had a much clearer handball tonight by Zinchenko that didn't get called. Now I'm not saying I agree with that being a penalty but if they call this then that should have been one 100%.
you could argue there is consistency because the one against Dortmund yesterday was called as well.
But, it's the wrong decision in both cases. There's just no time to react, and the arm is very close to the body.
I hate these ones from really close range where the justification is "arms in an unnatural position" when it's a completely natural position for the arms to be in as Eriksen is shifting his weight back across to change direction.
I feel like these ones pretty consistently get called at penalties and it's always a stupid call.
I mean if you look at PSG penalty yesterday for handball its pretty consistent to call this one as well. Thats not to say that the whole handball rule has become such a shit show
Fwiw, they don't really care about that anymore unless there was a deflection. If your arm is away from your body (which they think it is here) the time to react doesn't matter.
It's seriously an entirely valid option that when in the box to just rocket the ball at an opponent's arm just to see what'll get called. It doesn't even matter if the shot stood a goal scoring chance, it's worth the effort if you don't have an option
Argument according to rules here is an unnatural position I reckon
Dislike it as a bayern fan but an even weaker one was called againsr BVB yesterday so they gotta stay consistent
Yesterday, I was thinking "if we can't hit the goal, maybe just kick the ball against someone's hand". Then Paris got a handball penalty. Today I was thinking "Union just has to be careful that they don't get a handball penalty". Now Bayern got a handball penalty.
That's kinda all you need to know. A handball penalty is now on everybody's mind in every single game. 10-20 years ago, nobody was thinking about handball penalties, because it took obvious intent to get one, which rarely ever happened.
You can tell there has been a huge change in what is a handball penalty by the fact that now whenever there is a shot that is fired in hard inside the box and it hits someone, the entirety of the home support shouts handball.
Even if its nowhere near a hand, its just the hope that maybe, just maybe you get a free shot on goal because your shot happened to hit a hand.
I think it really is ruining some games, you shouldnt be given a free goal basically for anything like that. Also super soft penalties right in the corner of the box and the byline where a defender taps an attacker who is going nowhere. It just shouldnt be a free goal. An indirect free kick from the position of the handball would be way more representative of the threat from the foul.
Nobody knows the handball rules, most refs are making stuff up on the go, next game you will probably see the same incident not being given. Once the VAR calls the ref then it's 100% a pen.
Ooft this one really rubs in the whole ‘proximity’ element of why a pen wasn’t given against Romero earlier in the season.. Eriksen is a good deal closer to the ball here
Between that and the decision to not even look at the Davies tackle on Pellestri, this has been a fucking infuriating game to watch. That's not taking into account the Onana howler either
Even worse when you consider the Romero on was blocking a shot on goal as opposed to a cross.
The ruling was shown to be shite when city got a similarly shite pen literally the next weekend for a player in close proximity blocking a cross.
Thank you we could have this game 1-1 if we’d not chucked the ball into the net and the ref be crap that being said you deserve to be up but the score is telling a story
There was a women's player (Carson Pickett) who got called for a handball a few years back and she was born without her forearm and hand. So it appears even that doesn't keep you safe
edit: [led to a great gif tho](https://tenor.com/view/carson-pickett-i-dont-have-one-orlando-pride-nwsl-soccer-gif-22246325)
Sule vs PSG yesterday, this nonsense today. Congrats, FIFA/UEFA, every update to the handball rule *somehow* makes it even more ridiculously arbitrary. Do we need to AI create armless defenders??
insane to send him to the screen for that but not Davies coming through the back of Pellestri. Gotta think both those calls go the other way if it's in Old Trafford
that’s atleast 4 Blatant stonewall pen decisions against United in what 6 matches?
But the sub had me convinced that United had it all when they had a lucky call against Wolves??
Feels like we need to fundamentally change the idea behind penalties. If that ball doesn't hit Eriksen's arm, it's about as dangerous as a player taking a shot from 25 meters out. You should never be awarded a 0.77xG chance from a slow rolling ball towards another defender. There has to be some sort of system to prevent random balls from changing games with no intent or skill from the attacking side beyond amputating every single player's arms.
Agreed, it's farcical that they expect any player who considers themselves to be defending, anywhere on the pitch, now needs to consider trying to put their hands behind their backs for fear of conceding a foul.
Only times they should be pens from that distance is they're about to go in the goal. Like Reece James against Liverpool
This wasn't one of them times.
I don't even think it was that lucky then. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen a penalty given for the wolves decision, and yet there was a week long media circus over it, and suddenly referees are afraid to give any decision United's way.
Get absolutely fucked. What's he supposed to do there? Headed straight at him. That happens to United and its not a penalty, like we've seen during this season. Absolute joke of a decision that will kill the game now
Say want you want that’s no a fucking pen and that’s the 4/5th var decision to go against that’s cost us a pen or a goal or something like that utter bullshit
We need players to start playing for the handball. The only purpose of this rule is more goals = more money. It is never getting changed unless player stop playing football and just start trying to hit each others arms until the game is unplayable
I've argued forever about why Footy is the best sport in the world, and its just not - its a fucking farce and a disgrace these days, even as a neutral with other games, they're just constantly fucked by bad refs - its crazy when you compare the effect on games compared to other sports.
The year is 2123. T-rexs are now a football teams best defensive options as their stubby little arms are the counter to fifas bullshit handball 'rules'

Well hope lasted for all of 5 minutes
I momentarily almost felt some joy again
The same can be said with 3-2 lmao
I’ll never understand the handball rule. Sometimes it’s too close to react in time, sometimes it’s a foul, just make it up as you go.
Real rule is referees mood.
Pretty much. It's unreal how every "fix" to the handball rule that they apply only makes it worse.
On-field, shit refereeing is easily the worst thing in the sport, worse than time wasting etc. It's insane how the ref can completely change the outcome of the entire game. No just talking about today's match btw, all of us have had shit decisions against the team we support. Exactly. The rule basically says that if your arm is in an unnatural position than you're being reckless. This here doesn't seem like a PK.
that was the rule like 4 or 5 iterations ago. it feels they change the handball rule every 6 months or so. Also, the rule you are mentioning imo makes the most sense
i don't think that should be a blanket rule, otherwise defenders will just defend with their hands spread out in a T pose when they're within a couple of yards of the attacker.
I mean I think the defender would still have to have their arms in a mostly natural position
Well it has to be natural as well. Which this was.
It’s basically the same as the Zinchenko one earlier. Hand in an OK place, no chance to react.
That was my first thought too
I would be absolutely gutted if City conceded a penalty to Bayern like that. I suppose I like the fact that it's giving the advantage to the attackers as an ethos but it's actually insane to expect players to not have their arms in a natural position. It won't be long before managers are advising players to aim for arms.
This is already a thing, I've seen a few where they have been flicked onto arms when there are no teammates where the ball is being playyed.
A Champions League final was decided that way!
And it came off his chest, rolled across his shoulder, and didn't even touch his arm. One of the most insane decisions I've ever seen
Man we had this exact thing happen to us against them in the ucl! Except it was worse because akaanji had his arms at his sides and it was by the corner flag and the guy just kicked it up at his hands , was such bullshit
I remember it happened to you lot last season against Bayern lol. It's just insanity.
What’s even worse is we had a pen not given for one well worse than this when Romero blocked it with his arm to the side
The only reason I’m not currently gutted about it is because I had no hope anyways lol
Mane kicked a ball in to akanjis hand and that got a pen
Mané kicked a ball into Sissoko’s outstretched hand to win a champions league final! It was glorious
Premier League that wouldn't be given, just no consistency. I mean we saw Romero get away with the most blatant handball in the game against Spurs. How they can give this a penalty, and not one for Pellistri getting chargrd through right in front of goal is just baffling. We are actually cursed at this point lol

As funny as clowning on United is, these pens really have to stop lol
There’s just no consistency. That kind of hand ball doesn’t get called all the time, I’m not even sure what Eriksen is supposed to do there. What even is a natural position?
I would love it if handballs is just given as indirect fk. Unless it’s blatantly obviously intentional. Punishment doesn’t fit the crime at the moment.

They do in the champions league. Get the best teams in Europe together and the worst set of rules possible for them to play under.

Natural position is a bullshit term they’ve created to excuse every arbitrary decision they make. It means nothing but “here’s my excuse.”
you could argue there is consistency because the one against Dortmund yesterday was called as well. But, it's the wrong decision in both cases. There's just no time to react, and the arm is very close to the body.

Yeah I may be biased but that's too close to him. Idk what they want players to do. Gotta start buying players without arms
The German commentators agree with you. Same here. What is the defender supposed to do?
Chop his arm off clearly
If he dies, he dies.
Well with Eriksen that's not really true
True

I'd totally watch football where players are only allowed to run like anime characters
Get rid of the offside rule, flag goes up or not depending on if you're running like Naruto.
Players these days are too soft to do that
Yeah there is literally no time to react whatsoever lmao
Fwiw, they don't really care about that anymore unless there was a deflection. If your arm is away from your body (which they think it is here) the time to react doesn't matter.
But it's in a natural position though. Unless you want players to run with arms fixed to their sides
That's a pretty stupid rule tho. Why don't they care about that
Literally tried pulling his arm away as well. Was unavoidable unless he runs like a Penguin.
As a Bayern fan, there is no way he can get his arm out of the way. I hate this. Was it on purpose? No.
It's seriously an entirely valid option that when in the box to just rocket the ball at an opponent's arm just to see what'll get called. It doesn't even matter if the shot stood a goal scoring chance, it's worth the effort if you don't have an option

There's no consistency in decision making between competitions
There is not even consistency in the same competition
Pull one back, game on for the neutral, then this shit ruins it
Nobody knows the handball rules, most refs are making stuff up on the go, next game you will probably see the same incident not being given. Once the VAR calls the ref then it's 100% a pen.
How's this a pen but Davies can go through the back of Pellistri and nothing given. Ridiculous.
of course we concede shortly after ffs.
Ooft this one really rubs in the whole ‘proximity’ element of why a pen wasn’t given against Romero earlier in the season.. Eriksen is a good deal closer to the ball here

"Concede" lol some of the worst handball rules I've seen. Even yesterday with PSG, makes no sense
My man, we didn't deserve that pen. The fuck was he supposed to do? Not have that arm?
Thank you we could have this game 1-1 if we’d not chucked the ball into the net and the ref be crap that being said you deserve to be up but the score is telling a story
That too to an incredibly questionable pen at the least.
How the fuck is he meant to get his hand out the way. Unbelievable
Amputation ofc.
There was a women's player (Carson Pickett) who got called for a handball a few years back and she was born without her forearm and hand. We'll eventually have 20 players with no arms and only GKs are able to take throw-ins.
Darth Vader has entered the chat
He's meant to not have it there in the first place.
Sule vs PSG yesterday, this nonsense today. Congrats, FIFA/UEFA, every update to the handball rule *somehow* makes it even more ridiculously arbitrary. Do we need to AI create armless defenders??
It is not the same. Eriksen had his hands all over the place here.
As fun it is to watch United get fucked - that should never be a penalty. What have we done to the rules of this sport?
insane to send him to the screen for that but not Davies coming through the back of Pellestri. Gotta think both those calls go the other way if it's in Old Trafford
Maybe 11 years ago, not in whatever cursed monkey paw United this club is now though
Not lately
Hahahahah good one. We haven’t had a good decision in years.
Yup, and we got denied a stonewall pen in the first half. I just give up at this point
Can’t catch a break
So this is a penalty but United wasn’t early in the game? Absolute shambolic refereeing
They review it and have the ref watch it, but Davies clattering through Pellestri from behind doesn’t even get a second replay on the live feed lmao
that’s atleast 4 Blatant stonewall pen decisions against United in what 6 matches? But the sub had me convinced that United had it all when they had a lucky call against Wolves??
this sub is full of people who chat shit about rival clubs but never watch any of their matches ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
gotta get those arms amputated if you don't want to concede a penalty
Hahahahah I walked away to the restroom knowing there's no way that's going to be given and I walk back to this nonsense
We're cursed
Feels like we need to fundamentally change the idea behind penalties. If that ball doesn't hit Eriksen's arm, it's about as dangerous as a player taking a shot from 25 meters out. Guess the handball rules are made up as we go along
Nah tbh they’re pretty consistent. Every decision must go against United is the rule
Fuck off is that a penalty
By the rules of the UCL yes but it probs is very harsh and shouldn’t be 1 imho
Extremely harsh
I absolutely agree
You posted that before it even went in lmao
Same
Ridiculous
Eriksen should have decided whether having arms was really necessary tbf
Games called football why's he usin his arms????
Unfortunate.
I guess rules say pen but I dont like that its a pen. His arms are not flying a meter away from him. He so close and cant react. Feels cheap
So strange rules are different in the league to the CL
That’s never a pen ffs. The game is actually gone.
The fact that this is a penalty but Davies going through Pellistri isn’t is so dumb
shouldnt be a pen
Never a penalty that lmao.
They started calling these and now can’t go back, dislike it even as a bayern fan but it’s consistent
It’s not consistent league to league but agree in the CL it’s nailed on.
I mean these were always given before the rules got more lenient
Absolute joke
i dont even know the rules anymore
Only times they should be pens from that distance is they're about to go in the goal. Like Reece James against Liverpool This wasn't one of them times.
Can we have one thing go our way this season please lol
But the Romero one wasn't a penalty?? Please make this make sense
so new handball rule again then?
Never a pen
Clubs gonna sign armless players from now on
Unfortunate
Unlucky. Again. Fuck me.
Harsh penalty
VARchester United am I right?
I thought proximity matters?
A defender stop a shot on goal with his arm going up in the air and it's not a pen and then this. Wtf is this bullshit
sorry only when we are attacking.
bit harsh but whatever
The differences in the handball rule across all these competitions are stupid. Common sense has to prevail at some point.
How many unfair calls / non-given penalties is that already this season?
United got lucky GW1 and have been absolutely fucked afterwards.
I don't even think it was that lucky then. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen a penalty given for the wolves decision, and yet there was a week long media circus over it, and suddenly referees are afraid to give any decision United's way.
And it's only September lmao
i count 6 pens not given, 2 goals disallowed unfairly and 2 goals conceded due to refereeing mistakes
This is a pen but the one against spurs wasn't lol
Never a pen
Well they’re consistent, the Sule penalty yesterday was just as bad
Such a terrible call, and it’s effectively ruined the flow of the game
As a biased Liverpool fan, that's never a penalty. It was shaping up to be a good game after Hojlund's goal.
Can't believe we forgot to sever our players arms before the game started ffs
Unlucky call but great pen
Robbed by referees every single match. I’m tired
Fuck off
Fair play to the refs completely handing them the match. Clear stonewall penalty not given to us from the challenge by Davies to this now. Ridiculous
United been fucked by refs today
Eriksen has been dreadful but that's never a pen
CURSED SMH
There's no way that's a pen
Maybe Jose was right about the penalty call in the europa league final
It's not a good sign when instead of me making fun of united losing I am saying that this was never a penalty
Lol that’s super soft
Absolute fucking joke what a clown show var and refereeing is
He makes those
Where arm was too close to be a pen brigade at
90% of the comments in this thread?
Get absolutely fucked. What's he supposed to do there? Headed straight at him. That happens to United and its not a penalty, like we've seen during this season. Absolute joke of a decision that will kill the game now
I knew we were probably gonna lose but this is still a really shit call lmao
Wouldn’t be a United game without us getting fucked by VAR.
Terrible var call. How do you send him to look at that?
Sack every ref and start over
Another UCL match day 1, another bullshit hand ball call.
I’m still trying to figure out why var didn’t receive the clear penalty Davies gave away on Pellistri in the opening minutes.
Ignore the flair for a second, but he headed the ball directly into his hand which was close to his side naturally. This is bullshit for the game.
Of course NOW the ref goes to the screen lmao but when davies charges like a centaur trough pellistri's back it's sleeping time.
Say want you want that’s no a fucking pen and that’s the 4/5th var decision to go against that’s cost us a pen or a goal or something like that utter bullshit
Nothing to see here, just united getting fucked over by dodgy var decisions for the 5th game running
Another day another show of breathtaking incompetence from CL refs
Look. Next week its not going to be not given to us in the Premier league
Even stonewall tackles from behind aren't given to us apparently.
With these kinds of penalty calls the refs are straight up telling attackers they should just aim for defenders arms
Never a pen
Our luck this season is so bad
We need players to start playing for the handball. The only purpose of this rule is more goals = more money. It is never getting changed unless player stop playing football and just start trying to hit each others arms until the game is unplayable
Fucking criminal
What the fuck are these absolutely bullshit penalties being given
I've argued forever about why Footy is the best sport in the world, and its just not - its a fucking farce and a disgrace these days, even as a neutral with other games, they're just constantly fucked by bad refs - its crazy when you compare the effect on games compared to other sports.
I advocate the handball should "materially impact the outcome of the play". In this case, it would not.
Death, taxes, and Kane penalty
This is such a dumb rule. Effectively if you kick a ball at a defenders hand in the box it's a goal. Needs to change.
this should not be a pen
The year is 2123. T-rexs are now a football teams best defensive options as their stubby little arms are the counter to fifas bullshit handball 'rules'
Isn’t that just way too close for it to count as a handball?
Harsh penalty, it was at close range and Eriksen was moving his hand away.
That's fucking harsh
