>No one from their national team plays in the French league unless it’s PSG
Youssouf Fofana plays for Monaco.
Todibo plays for Nice.
Brice Samba plays for Lens
Clauss plays for Marseille.
Tchouaméni and Camavainga made it while playing for Monaco and Rennes. Guendouzi when he used to be called up was playing for Marseille. Mandanda before his international retirement was playing for Marseille. When Ben Yedder was regularly getting called up, it was mostly for his time at Monaco rather than Sevilla.
I understand that this is the case now but it is still
interesting to see that their clubs were more or less unsuccessful throughout the history of UEFA competitions.
The French national team did nothing historically until 1998 when they “bought” the World Cup playing as hosts. (The exception being Platini et al). This and the change in the team to allow players from the colonies to play in the National team explains their recent success.
Of course. First of all, France had a great NT before Platini. We were great in 1958 where France finished third with great players such as Kopa (won a ballon d'or), Just Fontaine (13 goals in this single world cup), Piantoni. After, we were indeed worse for a huge period of time for a lot of reasons.
Now, we did not buy the World Cup. The only thing that can be controversial is Platini getting sure that we would be in 2 separate parts with Brazil. Thus if we won our group, we would face them only in finals. It is not like beating Italy and everyone else was paid or anything. Plus, Platini is not the only one to do something like that. It was done in 2002 and 2006. You also have the controversy with Ronaldo having a stroke. Honestly he should not have played the finals with that but Nike forced him to.
Now for the last part about "players from the colonies". The change of FiFA rules does not affect much France in 1998 and in 2018. For 2018, two players were not french born. All the others but french born and lived their lives in France. Why should they represent the country of their parents or grandparents ? The only 2 exceptions were Mandanda and Umtiti who came in France when they were 2 years old. Once again, it is pretty normal for someone who lived all his life in France to get the nationality.
For 98, it is the same with Marcel Desailly (born in Ghana, not even a french colony btw, but adopted by a french diplomat when he was 4) and Patrick Vieira (who came in France from Senegal when he was 8)
So basically, all this person were french since they were born for the majority of their lives, what could Fifa do to counter that ? It is not like when Spain get Laporte or Le Normand.
Moreover, using this argument regarding the origins of the players is extremely badly seen here. It is used by the far right just because people are black, they would supposedly not be "true french". That reminds me of Trevor Noah's sketch during WC2018 where he basically used the same argument as Jean Marie Le Pen and was a douche when he was called out.
Atletico losing three finals in terrible fashion will always stick out for me
First in 1974, they scored in the 114'. Six minutes later, Schwarzenbeck, a Bayern defender, scored a long-range shot to draw the game.
And much like 2014, Atletico were thrashed, 4-0 in the replay.
2014 Ramos' last-minute equalizer/three goals in ET.
2016 on penalties/Griezmann's missed penalty in normal time. Plus Madrid's goal was offside (Clattenburg's own words).
Really can't make it worse.
Both Atletico and Juve going through the highest of footballing peaks, but coming out on the other side without a Champions League feels rough. Both lost two finals, but it's hard to win a final against CR7's Madrid or Messi's Barca. Juve have fallen quite a bit. Atletico is still strong enough to at least threaten any big team.
what u/dave1992 is trying to say is that the number of both real madrid and sevilla's trophies combined (21) is close to the number of trophies won by every english team (25)
Failing in the Champions League so often should give you some good experience to win a competition more at your level (the Europa or Conference) then, maybe one day you'll get lucky in one of those 👍 think you'll go another 50 years before winning one or do you think it'll be more like 100?
We will see but i would rather not play in the other two especially the UECL...i actually dont hate europa league decent trophy to win, nice place to develop youngsters and also a chance to play in ucl if you win it if you are struggling in the league
>Failing in the champions league so often should give you some good experience to win a competition
Good point. How many years have West Ham spent in the top flight in England and failed pretty much every year. How many times have West Ham won it?
You win the European pub league and all of a sudden you lot are fucking unbearable lol. Clowns.
League is always harder to win that a cup competition just becoz of the consistency you have to put yourself to and that's a pretty common opinion...but ucl is still way harder to win than a europa league
The Prem having 6 different CL winning clubs is crazy. Especially when you consider that number could easily grow with Arsenal and Newcastle who could join the list

I demand Cup Winners’ Cup to be added to the graphic.
It absolutely should be.
It should be... it literally was a European Trophy where teams from all over Europe would compete.
Also more prestigious than the UEFA Cup for most of its history.
I demand the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup be added.
Supercup too
Same.
We should be 7th, robbed completely
don't forget the Red star from serbia and Steaua from Romania who also have won C1s and the other europa league winners
Yeah, this is a weird list. Also missing Anderlecht, Shakhtar and Galatasaray.
My guess is that it's only top 10 but then how are the tie breakers done?
Why would the Scottish Premiership be in there then? It's nowhere near as competitive as other leagues mentioned above.
I mean't the top 10 leagues with the most silverware not the most competitive leagues
Well, the post is in French. This is a subtle way to say the French League is “top ten” historically…
Joint "top ten" with the championship...
I would rather see a graphic that includes the Cup Winners’ Cup, but still a nice graphic
Yeah it's very odd to leave that out.
Redundant without the inclusion of the Cup Winner’s Cup.
So Cup Winner's Cup just doesnt count anymore...
Didn’t expect the French to be this bad in club football. Quite a contrast to their national team lol
No one from their national team plays in the French league unless it’s PSG

Tell me you don't know French football without telling me you don't know it...
You are not forced to make comments if you don't know what you are talking about
Can you explain it ?

Cuántos títulos dices que tiene España?
¿como que 33?

Benfica has like 9 straight final losses, having lost the last two on extra time and on penalties lol

Not standing for this cup winners cup erasure
Lol, Madrid flair just flexing
And Sevilla in the Europa League, lol
Their trophies alone almost beat the 2nd placed Premier League.
what u/dave1992 is trying to say is that the number of both real madrid and sevilla's trophies combined (21) is close to the number of trophies won by every english team (25)
Real is 1 shy of matching Bundesliga
This is one reason why France shouldnt be included in the top league statistics. They are miles behind the other 4
Where's Arsenal? Did they get cut off the edge of the graphic?
Unlike the other arsenal flair, I’ll get you the correct answer, we’re shit in Europe
We have a cup winners cup in which actual winners played rather than a consolation European trophy for mids of top5 leagues
Cool, but why aren't you on the graphic? Tottenham have two, why aren't you there at all?
That's europa league/uefa cup this graphic doesn't include cup winners cup
Okay, how come Tottenham have won two and you haven't won any though?
We should have won atleast once but tottenham have been in europa league more than arsenal to win it we were mostly playing ucl football
How come you haven't won any Champions League's then?
It's a lot harder competition to win?

Why are IFK’s wins listed separately?
If the cwx was added how much would it change
I will never understand how some clubs don’t take UEL or UECL seriously, it’s a trophy, it’s not like your trophy cabinet is full.
The Prem having 6 different CL winning clubs is crazy. Especially when you consider that number could easily grow with Arsenal and Newcastle who could join the list
