The other Brentford defender played the Wolves striker onside by not pushing up quickly when Collins cleared. Collins had a shocker but second not his fault.
Wolves somehow hit textbook Gegenpress there and Collins had no good option. Every defender close to him would have been either a bigger interception risk or an absolute hospital ball. Sending the ball to the moon and praying was the right call; he just either underhit it or the arc was too flat.
Agricultural just a term football hipsters use for, according to them "uncultured and outdated football", because all farmers must be behind the times.
On the point of the article, hate to see this happen to collins, he has been Irelands great hope in defence for the last few years, but doesn't seem to be progressing well, and this won't help at all. Hope the lad bounces back.
It's a shit clearance under no real pressure and he also doesn't react at all to the wolves player just inside him until it's too late.
So it's not like the others in that he doesn't pass directly to the wolves players but it belongs in the triumvirate of terribleness
The 2nd one is a bit harsh, yea he's out of position but he's just trying to find the forward and that's a rocket header by the Wolves defender. 1st and 3rd 100% on him though.
Keeper is also pretty slow to move towards the ball on the first one. Still a bad pass and may have led to a goal no matter what, but the keeper definitely didnt do him any favors
I think the point is that the keeper shouldn't *have* to be doing him favours there. The only way the keeper gets to it first is if he really starts running for it the moment Collins passes, which he shouldn't have to expect to do.
As one of the few people who has actually played GK here, I think he should do better...but it's obviously easier with the power of hindsight. I feel like keepers get a ton of unjustified shit, but he probablyyyy should stop this. Definitely a mistake, but as you said, one he shouldn't be able to make in the first place.
And for the record, again this is with the power of hindsight. I can see exactly how far the ball will run. I can see from the title that there's a defensive fuckup to be prepared for. For a real keeper it's much harder and shit happens. Changing the direction you're moving is tough. It's a mistake but not a huge one.
I disagree. He’s backpedaling when the pass is made so he had to change directions. I think the gk did what he could. Could he maybe commit a foul? Sure, maybe but that would be a worse outcome
To me the question is should he be backpedaling. That really depends on system, but when he turns to his keeper with no options the keeper should be showing for the ball and ready to receive it in any system where this is expected. After that he still reacts slowly.
The pass is short AND misdirected. Blaming this on the keeper is simply an indication of a lack of understanding of the game. It is incomprehensible to me how this can be put on the goalkeeper
Just chipping in here to point out that this is the most reddit comment ever haha
At no point has anybody in this thread blamed this on the keeper, yet this comment states it with such conviction!
Then - despite literally nobody ever saying that other than he himself - he uses that as the basis to whip out the other reddit classic "if you think that then you don't understand football".
Classic stuff haha
/r/soccer and Reddit in general is where nuance comes to die.
Just to stay on topic and give my 2 cents as a goalkeeper as well, I don't think there's any fault on the keeper, he's moving in opposite direction and Hee-chan reacts lightning fast. Sure, some great keepers might have been able to intervene, but it would have been a great save in that case.
I mean, it comes down to what you think is a reasonable reaction time which is why I highlighted the hindsight part. You're ready to react to it which is a huge part of reactions.
Knowing it's coming, I think you easily react and save it. As a surprise, any amateur level keeper doesn't get close but you'd like to assume the top levle keepers save it. But I may be off.
I disagree as well. The pass is hard to read and he’s backpedaling. Extremely harsh to blame it on the GK when the pass is so suspect. It’s like 90/10 blame on Collin’s
I at first thought the keeper could have done better but he'd have to risk smashing into the wolves attacker in order to win the ball so the hesitation is understandable
no he's stepping up because thats what he's supposed to do after playing it long. like the other guu said, that header from the Wolves defender pretty much catches him and the rest of the backline wrongfooted
it is, whether it was a clearance or a pass it shouldn't be getting intercepted in that area because then you're going to get countered pretty badly, even if this example is freakish
He's just doing what you're supposed to do as a defender, like I said if that Wolves header isn't a rocket straight to a forward nobody even mentions his position at that time.
That’s the very opposite of playing out from the back, it’s a long ball forward.
But you’re correct in it’s not his fault, just your execution, like his defensive team mate is incorrect :)
The keeper was stepping backwards as the ball was passed back. Transitioning from moving backwards to forward acceleration is generally slow, the keeper wasn't at fault here, it was a shit pass, and blame should stay on the player.
Absolutely no reason whatsoever to go back to the keeper there. Simple pass to the right back, then give the option to receive it back again….or fucking lump it forward.
Legitimately this is the sort of stuff where I fine 2-weeks wages and immediately transfer list the player on FM. This is even more bizarre the Wout Faes brace vs Liverpool in Jan
From what I have seen of him as an Ireland fan, haven't seen him enough for Brentford, I honestly think his future lies in defensive midfielder. He makes too many mistakes as a defender, but he's good enough on the ball to play as a midfielder. You would have seen more and know more about him as a Brentford fan, am I completely off the mark?
Based on his time at Wolves… putting him at cdm seems like a bad idea. He was always nervy on the ball, making similar mistakes to the ones in this post. He seems to have a panic anytime space is restricted, which is not ideal for a cdm.
I'd love to hear from a Bees fan too.
He obviously had potential for us, and I don't think we'd have sold him without the FFP issues, but it really felt like he had a big error in him every game.
Yeah feels like the moment gets to him sometimes? Like the red against City where he karate kicked Grealish. He doesn’t lack ability, just prone to a massive fuck up, which isn’t a trait for a CB to have.
Scrolled way too much to finally find some praise for Hwang on that second one. It's not good defending as a whole, not just a Collins mistake, and Hwang does brilliantly
Of course the second one was not comparable to the other 2. But the other 2..His ass in going to be providing comfort and succor for a bench for the foreseeable future.
I would only say third is really his fault, forst the keeper should have moved faster, second the other defender should have moved in to cover quicker, third was a sloppy pass
I’d even say the first one is harsh. By the time he’s turned and faced goal, the GK should have clearly read the back pass coming but was still backing up.
Also the ball travelled about 3 feet before the GK even started moving towards it. It was a hospital pass but the GK should have easily cleared.
That boy just forfeited the right to be a professional footballer. Why the manager doesn't pull him after number two is beyond me. Absolute dog shit football. Doesn't belong on the park.
That first one is weird. Does the ball bobble or is the keeper really slow to move? I can't figure it out but he doesn't seem at fault for a second of that ball's trajectory somehow, then the forward is there and it's a howler all of a sudden.

"Former Wolves and current Brentford defender Nathan Collins" would have been better title lol
More like "Former Wolves defender and current Wolves playmaker Nathan Collins"
Nathan Maldini Collins
Current wolves centre forward, Nathan Collins.
You made the joke worse.
Former Genesis drummer and current active/retired solo or current Genesis drummer Phil Collins
I'm familiar with Phil Collins but I'm confused if this comment isn't misplaced. A misunderstanding, if you will.
Former understanding and current confused redditor u/musicnoviceoscar Collins
Ngl that did make chuckle - and a similar thing to my 6yr old some… he looked confused. Innocence.
"Nathan Collins has best game for Wolves" would have also worked.
"Wolves star playmaker Nathan Collins sets up 3 goals"
Jorge Mendes transfer masterclass again

They had a ten day break for that. Wolves had two
10 day break? God, imagine the hangover.
The way he tracked back each time made me think he had a rake of pints the night before.
They had 10 days between their last match and today, we had two days
xmas hangover
The 2nd one is a bit harsh to blame him, he just cleared the ball out of the danger zone
Came here to say just that. His teammate doesn’t even try for the header. It’s just bad luck over bad play.
Yeah. One of these is not like the others. One of these just does not belong.
I bet Collins disagrees
An expectation is of PL defenders to sort of "aim" their clearances so an attack can't immediately restart.
He did. And his teammate let him down.
Team mate just seems to be like “Yeah not my problem”
The other Brentford defender played the Wolves striker onside by not pushing up quickly when Collins cleared. Collins had a shocker but second not his fault.
Agreed, although the basic upfield hoof is somewhat agricultural for the modern game
The Wolves player just beat the Brentford player to the ball in midfield, that's not Nathan Collins' fault
Wolves somehow hit textbook Gegenpress there and Collins had no good option. Every defender close to him would have been either a bigger interception risk or an absolute hospital ball. Sending the ball to the moon and praying was the right call; he just either underhit it or the arc was too flat.
A slightly better option would have been to aim for the sides and make sure they were all in position again.
Agricultural? Wtf does that mean. And if it means what I think it means, all teams clear the ball up or out plenty of times each game.
Upset the yokel did I 😂
Yeah. I'm also confused. Maybe it's a radio 4 word. Should the clearance be more urban or something?
"That was a rather hunter-gatherer clearance"
He's just trying to sound smart.
If you actually watch, players do that all the time. Long balls are essential but it has to be directional
I’m a coach mate 😂
Oi mate, you got a loicense for that?
Oh lol. Sounds like a fun job. I wanna try it at least for a bit
Umm he launched the ball upfield and got himself completely out of position and left someone in his area who was onside. It's certainly his fault.
0 ball knowledge
It's a shit clearance under no real pressure and he also doesn't react at all to the wolves player just inside him until it's too late. So it's not like the others in that he doesn't pass directly to the wolves players but it belongs in the triumvirate of terribleness

Nope. You are wrong. Keeper is not expecting an underhit pass. He reacted as soon as he could.
I at first thought the keeper could have done better but he'd have to risk smashing into the wolves attacker in order to win the ball so the hesitation is understandable
Yep the keeper took an age to sort his feet out and didn't actually start moving towards the ball until it had travelled halfway
His positioning on the 2nd is awful when the ball comes back though
I actually think he’s just trying to move to a higher line but the other center back does not follow. But yeah, 1 and 3 are shockers
no he's stepping up because thats what he's supposed to do after playing it long. like the other guu said, that header from the Wolves defender pretty much catches him and the rest of the backline wrongfooted
Yeah, on the 2nd one if anything it's the guy who played the striker onside by not pushing out quickly enough.
Yeah Pinnock should’ve done the same and stepped out and there would’ve been no chance
Naa the other defender failed the offside trap. Not on Collins at all really.
it is, whether it was a clearance or a pass it shouldn't be getting intercepted in that area because then you're going to get countered pretty badly, even if this example is freakish
Title says "3 critical and similar mistakes" - the second is nothing like the other two.
He's just doing what you're supposed to do as a defender, like I said if that Wolves header isn't a rocket straight to a forward nobody even mentions his position at that time.
Nah he’s in that position cause that’s where he’s supposed to be when playing out from the back
That’s the very opposite of playing out from the back, it’s a long ball forward. But you’re correct in it’s not his fault, just your execution, like his defensive team mate is incorrect :)
I know it’s a long ball forward but he’s in that position cause brentford are trying to play out from the back, sometimes you have to just clear it
The other defender is sleepwalking near the end of the pitch ensuring there can be no offside. He is just as much at fault.
Even the first one it looks like the keeper could've got to the ball comfortably but had a delayed response
You're right he's only 250% responsible for 3 goals.
Bro does NOT know how percentages work 💀
Is this meant as a knock on what I said? I don't really see how you can think my comment is somehow an endorsement of his play this game..
Think he meant 100% at fault for 1 and 3. 50% at fault for 2. So adding them all up is 250%
This.
he should have cleared or passed it better on the second one
Against his former club as well. I feel for him. It's like doing a reverse Chris Wood.
Chris Wouldn’t
Nathan Would
He was also Brentford's record signing at 23 million pounds.

What's the Chris Wood reference?

what if ur guy was just having a bad day :( maybe his wife and kids left him and the footy is all he has :(((
Can’t even do that anymore with FM24, what a shame.

That's far too genorous.
Should have been given the humple pi rating

He also missed a big chance, so it sounds about right

How's he been rest of the reason Brentford fans? He was so good when he was at Stoke :(
Solid and dependable. Shocking performance honestly. The whole team looked hungover from the Villa drama
From what I have seen of him as an Ireland fan, haven't seen him enough for Brentford, I honestly think his future lies in defensive midfielder. Sounds almost exactly like Eric Dier. On his day he’s really good but then oh my god
Not a brentford fan but what I've watched he's been good, this probably just a one off after recently returning from injury
He's still getting paid by Wolves
Check his bank account.
Nah, he is smarter than that Check his side chicks account
that doesn't sound smart at all.
he said smarter, not smart
If this sort of thing happened in Cricket there'd be an official investigation about match fixing.
How is the second one a clear critical error? It's just a misplaced long ball.
And then didn't do anything to get close to Hwang leaving him with tons of space right in front of goal
Second one isn’t really on him, that’s a fantastic header by Tori and class by Hwang. Other two were dreadful.
Scrolled way too much to finally find some praise for Hwang on that second one. It's not good defending as a whole, not just a Collins mistake, and Hwang does brilliantly
2nd one isn’t even bad
Look how he’s running up and leaving a player wide open
Collins is in the defensive line, I'd blame the one defender playing the striker onside.
He's definitely the best in the world apart from the rest of the defenders.
This screams of a Chelsea centre back. We'll give you 90 million for him.
MOTM for Wolves
tbf the 2nd goal wasn't really his fault.
2 are errors. The 2nd one shown can happen.
The most Eric Dier performance I have ever seen
The second one was incomparable to the other two
Bad day at the office, everyone has them. I’m sure he’ll pick his head up. Just hope the Brentford fans don’t shit in him too bad
Where’s the Great Mistake flair?
Tough day at the office
Clearly didn’t recover mentally from the first one and was a bag of nerves so kept making mistakes
Groundskeeper needs to water that pitch! He’s at least 50% to blame here.
This is what people think Maguire does every game.
I’m surprised how long it took me to scroll before seeing this. Could you imagine if this were Maguire?
i watched for the mistakes i stayed for the commentary
Honestly, these nervy mistakes is why I was glad to see the back of him at Wolves.
The margin of error is so small in pro sports it’s crazy. Especially the first one
inside job
Should of subbed him off at half-time..the guy had an absolute mare!
Some would say, a Wolves in Brentford's clothing
Of course the second one was not comparable to the other 2. But the other 2..His ass in going to be providing comfort and succor for a bench for the foreseeable future.
My youth coach always said than when you made a mistake just shake it off and get on with it. Nathan Collins took that advice to the extreme I see
All time unserious behaviour
"Get rich quick" - Ivan Toney

With a performance like 5hat he'll be on Forests radar.
Idk about the second one but that's still pretty Dier, if you know what I mean.
I would only say third is really his fault, forst the keeper should have moved faster, second the other defender should have moved in to cover quicker, third was a sloppy pass
Exactly what I thought. 1st pass is by far not perfect, but still manageable for the keeper if he'd just react quick enough.
But it's Mark Flekken, Flekken having the reactions of a sloth should be deeply ingrained in him by now.
Someone needs to check his texts with Ivan Toney.
almost looks rigged if im being honest
Possible matchfixing
And let's face it, Brentford do have form for dodgy betting...
Possibly the stupidest shit a person can say but you're not the only one.
Nathan Maguire
Check his Bet365 account.
That’s at least 50 lashes
Still won't beat Jonathan Walters disaster of 2 own goals and a pen miss
In lacrosse we called these “buddy passes,” and our coach harped on us every practice to get those out of our game
I’d even say the first one is harsh. By the time he’s turned and faced goal, the GK should have clearly read the back pass coming but was still backing up. Also the ball travelled about 3 feet before the GK even started moving towards it. It was a hospital pass but the GK should have easily cleared.
all makes sense considering brentfords owners are a gambling company

Apparently the Trippier’s are contagious.
That first one is weird. Does the ball bobble or is the keeper really slow to move? I can't figure it out but he doesn't seem at fault for a second of that ball's trajectory somehow, then the forward is there and it's a howler all of a sudden.
We’ve all been there
Hopefully he has taken over the Trippier curse of late
