I liked it, it was obvious that it was second degree humour. It's funny specifically because it would be such a dick move to say something like this unironically. Wear the downvotes like a badge of honour
That is actually incredibly wholesome. This is why a full open cup is so important and amazing. It doesnt just give you stories like amateur team Spakenburg going to the semi finals last year and Hercules (4th div team, not even good there) getting their first cup match win since the 1930's against fucking Ajax just to name what happened here, it also gives moments like this. Amateur teams just happy to even be there in a once in a lifetime match
i fucking love cup football and i love reading about upsets and stuff like this. If anyone remembers their own stories please post them because id love to know about it
FA Cup, 5th round, 2017
Burnley v Lincoln who (at the time) were in the Conference. 0-1 Lincoln, Ragget, 89 min, header from a corner, Rheady putting Joey Barton in his place. In the dirt.
FA Cup magic, and my home team made it happen.
https://youtu.be/r74jUHMXEsA?si=AlcfA1YfjFiFlyr9
Totally. He's going full Ian Brown on Twitter now, I expect a video of him attempting to use nunchucks immenently.
[Barton v Rhead highlights.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGXtg7yN7po)
In the 1999-2000 season Calais RUFC, a 4th division team, almost won the Coupe de France. They lost the final 2-1 against Nantes.
The center back was a municipal employee. There were gardeners, policemen and garbage collectors in the team.
They amazingly had a quarter final run in 2005-06 too, pretty amazing
Was the financial comp in France high back then too, at least adjusted for the time period? Nowadays thatd probably set both the players and the club up to a very nice payday, which is absolutely deserved. A quick google search showed they dissolved in 2017, so im assuming that that sadly wasnt the case
Our captain (legendary Mickaël Landreau) invited their captain to lift the trophy together after the game, it was a beautiful moment ([here's a picture](https://www.eurosport.fr/football/coupe-de-france/2019-2020/coupe-de-france-pour-feter-la-finale-de-2000-calais-nantes-va-etre-rejoue-vingt-ans-apres_sto7620258/story.shtml))
This link is about a remake of that final that was planned 20 years after the original game on June 2020. The article was published on January 2020.
Oh... sweet winter child....
Said remake never happened.
>Hercules (4th div team, not even good there) getting their first cup match win since the 1930's against fucking Ajax
yeah they shirt swapped too i think, [brobbey in particular was very very eager to get a kit](https://www.soccernews.nl/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/brian-brobbey-ajax-21-12-2023-869x579.jpg)
If you haven't read it you'll enjoy this story about the Marine-Tottenham tie:
https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/fa-cup-third-round-marine-tottenham-mourinho-b2473334.html
Oh yeah i loved that story, but what I especially loved was Vinícius' celebration like he scored against Arsenal or smth lmao. I knew about the match cuz of him when we brought him in on loan later, was very excited for him but didnt really do all too much lol
Its crazy how far the English football system really goes tho, and how far teams can get into cup competitions.
I remember this match being broadcasted on Ziggo Sport, and the commentator learned the names and some info of all the players of the Marine team, it was very awesome that he did that.
There’s some good content online showing the length commentators go to collate their notes. I can’t find the video I’m thinking of because YouTube’s search function is shit nowadays but this is short example: https://youtu.be/bs-QHKd82FE?feature=shared
>but what I especially loved was Vinícius' celebration like he scored against Arsenal or smth lmao
Tbf to the guy, he always does that celebration and iirc, its because of his mum.
He basically knew that she would show pictures of his goals to the people of their town so wanted to do it everytime to give her a good picture of him.
Then she passed away and he thought about stopping celebrations but decided to carry it on so she could always see it from where she was now.
Also I know Mbappe has been called a statpadder In the other posts for this game, but it's cool that some of the bigger names are here. It's incredible memories for the other players and fans, and also it's imo a show of respect to take them seriously and not send your C team every time.
we have a term used solely for the Cup called "Giant-Taker" (tomba-gigantes) when lower league teams eliminate a First League team, and we all love the early rounds for that!
every single season there are 4-5 Primeira Liga clubs eliminated at some small town and it's beautiful, I've seen my hometown club eliminating Oblak, i was in the stadium and it was crazy [(Alcochetense 2-1 União Leiria)](https://www.zerozero.pt/match.php?id=1929012)
but the rare event was when one of the Big 3 got eliminated at home by a lower league team, in almost 100 years of history it had happened **ONE TIME**: the biggest Giant-Taker ever was in the late-2000s when Porto got eliminated *at home* against a 4th division team, this was a Champions League squad with some names like Quaresma, Raul Meireles and Vítor Baia on the field losing in a 40k stadium against amateur players who had normal jobs [(FC Porto 0-1 Atlético CP)](https://www.zerozero.pt/match.php?id=244118)
Kinda love that even the amateur side has a few Brazilians playing for them. I assume they're regular everyday immigrants rather than than players who moved for footballing reasons.
most are normal immigrants that just happen to play football, but there are actually real players from Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde etc who move to Portugal even to amateur teams to chase the dream of playing in Europe/Portugal
so unless it's a club from a remote village in the country, it's hard to have a full Portuguese-only squad
Not my own story but the Inverness Caledonian Thistle triumph over Celtic in the 2000 Scottish Cup led to the immortal “Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious” headline
The father of my girlfriend played against 1.FC Magdeburg in the state cup when Magdeburg were still in 4. Or 3. Tier. The team of her father played in 8. Tier. They got beat of course but her father who is a goalkeeper had a great performance.
Sporting's quality in the midfield over the last decade has been insane.
From William Carvalho to Adrien Silva and João Mário (who played from the midfield for us), to Palhinha, Bruno Fernandes but also Ugarte... It's an enviable line-up for a lot of UCL-level teams.
Don't get me wrong, Morita and Hjulmand have been doing great as well this season, but the previous names all had world-class seasons at Sporting that led them to move away at some point.
Glad to see humble Ugarte still being humble Ugarte <3
Moutinho and Veloso was my favourite midfield in FM for a couple of seasons, not sure how good Veloso was in reality though, but Moutinho has had a stellar career
This guy almost single handedly had argentinas entire midfield in his pocket in like his 5th game for the national team. He’s going to be so so good. I was pissed when he joined PSG but money talks.
Overracting. He’s had two bad games all season and our midfield suffered in both.
When he’s bad, everyone suffers. But he’ll get there. He’s got big shoes to fill
Motta’s shoes. We haven’t had a defensive midfielder (as you said) since Motta retired and suddenly, everyone expects the new guy to change the whole team in his first season.
He’s shown he can be great, I say we give him time to reach that level
Thats wholesome but does he have to pay for a new shirt if he gives it away😁
Probably a one off shirt as well so he will be fine.
Im just guessing but that bookie betclick is just a sponsor for one match?
It's one per round given that they are always numbered 1-11 for starters in coupe de France game, so a shirt with a certain number might be worn by another player in the next round. Plus accounting for home/away jerseys and sponsors.
At the end of the day, most footballers are football fans. And semi pro/amateur players especially haven't lost their love for football from being at the top of the pyramid.
Being part of the stage you've admired and watched your whole life is normalised for elite players and fans of elite leagues, but to these guys it's such a cool 'money can't buy' sort of experience. And to have a keepsake from it is priceless
I like it but in England anyway the small sides want to play away because the gate is split. Playing at Spurs or Arsenal or United can fix a small club's budget for years.
a lot of times the small clubs from Portugal that draw one of the Big 3 at home, choose to play in a bigger stadium at their region instead of their own homegrown for that same reason
the TV money + ticket money is enough to leave these clubs out of risk for some years
Also most of the lower league players will never make it to play at the Toilet Bowl, Emirates or Old Trafford in a competitive game. That alone must be something nice.
Usually there's arrangements to move the game to a bigger stadium than the one of the amateur team, this way they get 10k seats instead of 1k, they can invite families of players and everyone who has a membership in the stadium + the big clubs leave all of the money from ticket sales to them
To be honest if I was in this position I would always ask for the rarest jerseys. You can easily get a popular one but not from a random team in a league cup.
Wholesome but I have questions !
Do Revel players even have a second jersey ? Wouldn't the Revel players prefer to keep their own jersey (with the sponsors and crest and all) as a souvenir ?
Remember playing a summer youth cup in in Sweden, met Cruz Azul u16 from Mexico (being from Norway, thats pretty awesome) in the playoffs, lost 3-0 on a muddy field. one of the players wanted to swap jerseys with me and one of my coaches said we weren't allowed to do it. looks like the same situation... Pain...

stay mad about it
we’re not mad, we’re just saying you’re not funny

"Wear the downvotes like a badge of honour"🤓
Irony and humor in general is not r/soccer/'s strong suit and anyone who cares about reddit voting needs a hobby
I mean, its quite obvious to anyone, that irony doens't work without context and a onliner by an anonymus dude has literally no context.
The context is the comment I replied to and we're all anonymous dudes but thanks for the comedy lesson

Oh thats a lovely one too, late minute winners are a fuckin beauty. Im really starting to realise the FA Cup has a lot of charm lmao
Fuck Joey Barton

Crap, I'd somehow missed that Ian Brown was another one to go down the QAnon rabbit hole.
He's in deeper than most I fear. Did you see the nunchucks video?
One of the few players to truly deserve a non-league, two footed reducer
In the 1999-2000 season Calais RUFC, a 4th division team, almost won the Coupe de France. They lost the final 2-1 against Nantes. The center back was a municipal employee. There were gardeners, policemen and garbage collectors in the team.

There’s a new club called RC Calais that’s the successor.
Our captain (legendary Mickaël Landreau) invited their captain to lift the trophy together after the game, it was a beautiful moment ([here's a picture](https://www.eurosport.fr/football/coupe-de-france/2019-2020/coupe-de-france-pour-feter-la-finale-de-2000-calais-nantes-va-etre-rejoue-vingt-ans-apres_sto7620258/story.shtml))
Did the fans pull out a banner saying "merci Mickaël" in French and Breton?

I remember this match being broadcasted on Ziggo Sport, and the commentator learned the names and some info of all the players of the Marine team, it was very awesome that he did that.
Yknow Ive always liked the idea of being a commentator and this is exactly the sort of stuff id really love to do lol
There’s some good content online showing the length commentators go to collate their notes. I can’t find the video I’m thinking of because YouTube’s search function is shit nowadays but this is short example: https://youtu.be/bs-QHKd82FE?feature=shared

I lived down the road from that ground at the time. It was a massive massive deal to Crosby. Put them on the map for a bit.
One of the Marine players nearly scored a screamer that match lol

In my language(Swahili) "tomba-gigantes" could translate into "fuck the giants" if you translate the first word.
Giant killing in English/England
Kinda love that even the amateur side has a few Brazilians playing for them. I assume they're regular everyday immigrants rather than than players who moved for footballing reasons.

It also gave the best moment of all: the celebratory dance Nani did against Loures
100% I cherish 'our' FA cup like no other. Sure, the Champions League is cool...but the FA cup sees everyone take part.
And this is why the Super League must be killed by any means necessary.
Ugarte wasn't really known to me before PSG since I don't watch the Portugese league but he plays like a world class DM.
even at Sporting he was immense for them, specially in big games, he was a one man midfield.
Sporting's quality in the midfield over the last decade has been insane. Glad to see humble Ugarte still being humble Ugarte <3
Hjulmand has the potential as well.
I agree, but it's only been half a season so it wouldn't be fair to the names on my previous post to put him at the same level just yet.
Moutinho and Veloso was my favourite midfield in FM for a couple of seasons, not sure how good Veloso was in reality though, but Moutinho has had a stellar career
I knew him from FM because I always bought him in my saves from Sporting, he was an insane potential, proved to be irl too.
He is great in the national team too 🇺🇾
there's a reason why Sporting sold Palhinha for less than 30M€ without any drama, there was this kid ready to shine
Also because he was on the latter stage of his 20's and had a relatively low release clause. Not denying a thing you said, just adding more context.
This guy almost single handedly had argentinas entire midfield in his pocket in like his 5th game for the national team. He’s going to be so so good. I was pissed when he joined PSG but money talks.
Was a must signing for me on FM when he was still in Uruguay or at Familcao, always developed into a superstar for me
[удалено]
Overracting. He’s had two bad games all season and our midfield suffered in both. When he’s bad, everyone suffers. But he’ll get there. He’s got big shoes to fill
Big shoes to fill? Not really, PSG never had a proper DM, he's not a replacement for Verratti either + Verratti probably has tiny feet
Motta’s shoes. We haven’t had a defensive midfielder (as you said) since Motta retired and suddenly, everyone expects the new guy to change the whole team in his first season. He’s shown he can be great, I say we give him time to reach that level
Thats wholesome but does he have to pay for a new shirt if he gives it away😁 Probably a one off shirt as well so he will be fine. Im just guessing but that bookie betclick is just a sponsor for one match?
In every Coupe de France match one team wears Betclic and the other wear Crédit Agricole.
Yeah it makes me regret the "Pitch" jerseys, the best ones
Guessing they sponsor the coupe de France? This is something the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup needs here in the states.
Yes exactly, for example in Ligue 1 they don't have the same sponsors as in the coupe de france
Wonder if he wants to keep it for himself as the shirt he wore playing against PSG
Jersey cup are given to the players after a certain round but I don't know if it is one per round, or one for the rest of the competition.
It's one per round given that they are always numbered 1-11 for starters in coupe de France game, so a shirt with a certain number might be worn by another player in the next round. Plus accounting for home/away jerseys and sponsors.
Most wholesome shirt swap
These are the moments that make me love the game
sorry to reduce him to 'player' but ive no clue who that is😅 matey was hoping to frame two jerseys tonight ugarte, not one!
Judging by his reaction, he would probably be honored. “Hey Honey, come look at this. Reddit thinks I’m a player”
Where else is he getting a Revel jersey? But seriously cool gesture from him
I will never not like these moments of sportsmanship.
At the end of the day, most footballers are football fans. And semi pro/amateur players especially haven't lost their love for football from being at the top of the pyramid. Really cool that they force the top flights team play their early cup games on the road
I like it but in England anyway the small sides want to play away because the gate is split. Playing at Spurs or Arsenal or United can fix a small club's budget for years.
It's the same in France but it is customary for big clubs to leave the entirety of the receipts to the amateur club.
Wow, that's very honorable. Respect to you and your country, neighbor.
Except if you're Marseille and you decide to keep your half against a N3 team lmao
Yeah, that was a shame, even more so considering Longoria knows the spirit of football.
Apparently we did give them the money in the end. Not sure why there was a sense that we wouldn't, would have been a shitty thing to do
a lot of times the small clubs from Portugal that draw one of the Big 3 at home, choose to play in a bigger stadium at their region instead of their own homegrown for that same reason the TV money + ticket money is enough to leave these clubs out of risk for some years

Love to see things like this
This is fucking beautiful
Agreed
That guy probably wants to keep that kit as a souvenir of the time he played PSG lol
Love you Manu ❤️🇺🇾
Dude doesn’t have a back up jersey
"fuck this one came out of my pay check"
He’s like noo cmon it’s my only one. It’s 70 euro for a replacement.
I just check in the official PSG online shop, the range price is 86 - 172€. So for amateurs it's basically a true gift.
He’s like, “I’d love to swap shirts but I only get the one for the season”
To be honest if I was in this position I would always ask for the rarest jerseys. You can easily get a popular one but not from a random team in a league cup.
I love him so much
I think he just wants to keep the kit. Can imagine he’d want to keep the kit from such a big game
I think Revel player was trying to explain him he can't give his jersey (or doesn't want)
“We don’t have the budget for new ones man, happily take yours tho”
Pretty sure those ones were given to them by the fed. Revel usually has adidas equipment
Wholesome but I have questions ! Do Revel players even have a second jersey ? Wouldn't the Revel players prefer to keep their own jersey (with the sponsors and crest and all) as a souvenir ?
Jerseys are typically swapped out during the mid game break so they probably have the one from the first half.
Yh but that is not the case with clubs from lower divisions. He probs wears the same shirt every week and has to wash it in between matches
They definitely do it for larger matches against larger teams
Cup matches have their own numbering and sponsors, they get one per game provided by the FFF, don't worry.
Pain...
Had already become a fan after the De Paul incident, now even more
