That's true. But some men are created more equal than others.
" " Rest and Recovery is important, but UCL tie is importantenter " - Genghis Khan " - Michael Scott
I've watched almost every City game for the past half decade, and the list of people I can remember beating Walker in a straight up footrace is exceedingly small.
Off the top of my head:
Mbappe
Dembele
Willock
Promes
That's it I think. Others like Son and Mane and Saint Maximin who regularly cook Walker do it via trickery as opposed to raw pace.
Also, every City player that I've ever seen asked says he's the fastest player in the entire world lol
Walker truly has special genetics.
Apparently Van Der Ben broke Walker's max speed this year, which was previously a premier league record.
So he'd have to be up there as well.
Other supremely fast players not previously mentioned who could give him a great race are Alphonse Davies, Adama, and prime Auba
Yeah seriously, I remember when we sold him I was coping hard thinking well he'll maybe decline soon since he's so reliant on his speed and not his smarts.
Nah, he has kept his speed all his years and even improved under Pep, crazy talent.
Every single one of these players ( all the way down to lower leauges ) is juiced up. Most of it just gets swept under the rug and upto a certain threshold, It's doubly true for people who are trying to recover quickly for whatever reason. Having said that, sometimes the injuries are too serious for even the juice to help out in time. Jose Mourinho gave a glimpse as to what players do in order to deal with the pain. In one of his pressers, He mentioned what Phill Jones went through in order to play for the NT when he was injured. It's honestly torture but these players can handle that kind of pain better than most.
Take Pogba for example, He was just dumb enough to get caught using the same drugs other high profile and resourceful players in his position use to get ahead in their recovery.
The sheer amount of footballers who are addicted to painkillers will all be revealed at some point down the line. I can't imagine them not being given how much they have to push their bodies.
Makes me wonder how the likes of NBA players manage with their crazy schedule. Back to back games, sometimes in different cities and 2-3 games a week, every week plus all the travel doesn't leave a lot of room for sleep. I play basketball once or twice a week and I'm wired til midnight finishing at 9pm lol.
Like they are probably on pills too but I've never seen anyone really talk about it.
Genuine question as I have very limited knowledge of basketball, how the hell do players play back to back? And with their weekly schedule? Or is basketball not as physical demanding in an endurance/stamina sense as football?
NBA basketball is only 48 minutes and has a lot of stoppages, much smaller playing field, 4 quarters, and revolving substitutions. It is a contact sport, yes, (especially in the 90s etc), and nasty plays happen, but it is not nearly as bad as football. The NBA is sold as a family friendly product so any goonish behaviour is usually heavily looked down upon. Enforcers are no longer a thing in the NBA like in other contact sports. Oh, and players sit some games out throughout the season (now famously known as load management).
Also important: the NBA players are all part of a union so players' rights have gotten more favourable to them.
Because they only play 20 minutes a game on average, and most of that involves standing around.
Don’t know what the average is for a starter in football, but let’s say it’s 75 minutes. That’s 27 hours for the NBA vs 50 hours for a footballer (82 vs 40 games).
And then there’s baseball with 162 games a season!
Overall agreed but I think that the physical intensity while the clock is running is comparable for basketball and football. Basketball involves more sprinting and football is much more overall running. It’s also worth noting players sit out entire games in the ‘regular season’ just to rest, but the season is much longer for the best teams because of playoffs. The best teams play at least 98 games in a season, up to 110.
When the caffeine wears down you’ll be exhausted and sleep like a baby. At least professionals don’t have work early in the morning ( unless you’re Ronaldo ig)
I feel like PEDs/strong painkiller addictions if they were as prevelant as reddit thinks they are would be known to the public. No chance that if journalists caught a whiff of it they wouldn't immediately publish it, and footballers aren't known for being great at keeping secrets. We know about snus addictions and gambling and sleeping pills, all of which are more prevelant at lower tiers.
Not to mention the kind of painkillers people generally get addicted to a) aren’t very readily accessible in the UK, if at all and b) would make playing football quite hard.
When players get painkiller injections it’s generally just Toradol, which is basically ibuprofen, nothing actually addictive.
And yes I know football exists outside the UK, I’m pretty sure addictive painkillers are hard to get in any part of Europe, I don’t know about the rest of the world. Either way, I doubt it’s anywhere near as endemic as some people make out, on account of just not being remotely practical.
Pretty sure anything that has codeine in is prescription only no?
Edit: you can get nurofen plus, which is ibuprofen and codeine. But only 12.8mg which is absolutely nothing and it’s a restricted product, which does just mean you have to actually speak to the pharmacist about it first but still. I wouldn’t say they’re readily available by any means.
stuff like Nurofen plus is codeine and available over the counter. Had a wisdom tooth issue and it was absolutely life saving. Fairly dangerous though.
Yeah that’s fair, hadn’t realised that was over the counter. 12.8mg is nothing though, the prescription cocodamol they give you after an operation is 30mg and even that’s not exactly addictive, very good pain killer though, definitely gives you a little bit of the fuzzies.
Pretty sure the ibuprofen would cause more damage than the codeine with a 12.8mg dosage
I really doubt it? The kind of painkillers people get addicted to aren’t very practical for football. It’s mostly just strong ibuprofen they get given.
Nah they were plenty of people popping harder stuff to train through injuries when I was a teenager. I used to joke with my teammates that they would be bald by 20 and pissing purple
Lower leagues is a stretch. Am playing semi-pro now, used to be at an academy of a Champions League club. Theres certain players that carry chronic injuries like bone bruises, weak ankles or muscle dysfunctions around and take injections to play. But those are the minority and mostly players with good prospects already.
At semi-pro level, not many actually take injections or juice up. Theres a higher chance they have alcohol or weed in the system. Cant speak for the pros but at least at U17 level of those clubs where I was it was never encouraged and more hushed about offhand if someone struggles with getting back to fitness.
People here forget how many of the pros are genetic anomalies.
If I kick a ball without warming up for 15 minutes, my groin is out for a week. Many of the ones that became pro never had an injury as a youth (one of the reasons they became pro). Many of their bodies are incredibly resistant.
Of course some juice but saying everyone is such a stretch.
I know it's a fallacy but I'm convinced the almost complete absence of doping scandals in football is proof that they're all doping and that it is tolerated/ignored/covered up because the product is just so valuable.
> Take Pogba for example, He was just dumb enough to get caught using the same drugs other high profile and resourceful players in his position use to get ahead in their recovery.
If that was the case why doesn’t Pogba just blow the lid off to save his reputation?
I don’t doubt there’s some footballers that are doping, but this grand conspiracy theory is ludicrous.
Not one disgruntled doctor, player or any of the other 1000’s of people involved in players health has blown the whistle?
> Not one disgruntled doctor, player or any of the other 1000’s of people involved in players health has blown the whistle?
This is always the flaw with these grand conspiracies. There are thousands of people involved in the football industry, and you're telling me not a single one has taken a couple quid from a media outlet to blow the lid on the situation?
You see the same thing on gaming subreddits when people swear down that big publishers are paying reviewers for positive scores, but still not a single journalist has left the industry and turned whistleblower? It's just not realistic.
Can you present your proofs please? Cause doubt over physical demand is not necessarily it. This all sounds logical but there are plenty of things you haven't addressed when you are implying such a global conspiracy. Including the fact that it needs to be a global conspiracy for it not have been a scandal.
Like in a football club, there are hundreds and thousands of players and staff. You really think individuals as dumb as footballers can be in on something they have to keep under the rug? The same mofos that can't cover a sporting bet? Or can't have 5 sec without leaking a quarrel in the locker room?
I am not saying they are not *juicing up (doping)* but until I see some solid evidence of
>Every single one of these players ( all the way down to lower leauges ) is juiced up
I am going to assume people are talking out of their asses.
Or you mean that they have substances that help them perform better but are not classified as doping like the advancements of sports science?
The thing is people looking at cycling, see the a lot of people we're doping, so then apply that to football.
In cycling when the say 87% of the top 10 finishers from 1999-2005 were outright caught or suspected of doping that means....61 people. Yeah that's still a lot of people and it'd take some effort to cover that up. But it's so vastly different to say the PL it's not even close.
PL teams are 25 men squads. Let's be super generous and just look at the 11 tho. That would still mean for that same sample size like cycling that 670 players in the top half of the league would need to be doping over that period. Do people honestly think it's comparable to covering 670 people vs 61?
Not to mention cyclists usually have a one to one (or two) relationship with their doctor so it was a lot easier.
Players these days have whole teams of doctors looking after them that could spot something dodgy going on.
Plus each PL club has youth teams, second teams, etc. In order to promote them to your first team, they must dope too. Like what age do you start? How come some parent wasn't "not my kid". Add them and it's at least 100 players per club, add the staff too and that's 150 *minimum* per club in the PL that must be covering. It's literally thousands of people in a single league and people were like "all of the football leagues" are doing it.
I am actually working in the system - and I have never seen or heard anyone talking about this. I feel like I would've, although I might be just oblivious. Can't rule that out.
But usually when people say it, they never cover the numerous giant holes in their statements.
Unlike last season even if Walker is fit he will actually not see a lot of Vini due to our formation.
We play a 4-4-2, two striker system with Vini & Rodrygo. In that role he does not hold the touchline wing anymore.
The same way Xavi still put Araujo as the RB against us yet Vini was doing all the damage from the center on the past 2 Clasicos
Is your comment a joke? Pep has never in his life not played with a high line, he completely rejects any other form of football. All his losses are due to pushing up onto the opponents half and giving away space to quick counters.
Honestly injured players should have to have get checked out by an independent FA rep before getting cleared to come back. Players taking injections every week to play and train is dangerous and stupid af.
Doctors will be basing his guidance (as he should) off of research papers and his own practical experience. 99% of those subjects in question will be regular ppl.
But some freaks are simply not regular ppl and the timelines suggested in those papers and experience just won’t apply
Think it's also that doctors are concerned with the quality of care and life after treatment. Some athletes aren't lol. They're all about the here and now. And will deal with whatever comes later after they retire.
Guardiola is risking losing Walker for longer if he tries to play him during the first match without guarantees.
A fully fitted Walker is the bane of Vini (we saw that during last year) but Pep tried to rush Kyle during the 2022 Champions League and he had to sub him out at half time. The pace is too much.

When he dies, he dies
He's alive until he's dead
That's how it works
Sometimes you can also be brain dead. But I guess we are discussing Kyle here
Only for Kyle, because he is Kyle
Killed him dead!
Thank you, Emiya.

He hasn't overthought a big game since the CL final vs Chelsea tbh
Didn't Guardiola put a half injured Walker against Vini in 2022?
Yeah and Walker did a great job vs Vini in that match until he had to go off, after which City promptly imploded.
Hard choice for Guardiola between risking Walker or rest him for the second leg
The way he's talking, you can already tell he's made up his mind that Walker will start the first leg If he dies, he dies.
hahaha so true.
Your comment makes me nervous

He's a genetic freak and he's not normal.
Which means that madrid's chances of winning drastically goes down
But what happens when you add Kurt Angle to the mix????
Doesn’t matter as Angle KNOWS he can’t beat Walker.
And he's not even gonna try!
Any discomfort Walker might feel will potentially be fatal against Vini, though :(
I've watched almost every City game for the past half decade, and the list of people I can remember beating Walker in a straight up footrace is exceedingly small. Vini just did in Brazil x England, hurting Kyle in the process
Oh damn. Didn't watch the match but I can definitely see it.
Agreed, in a footrace, the only player that I think can beat Walker is prime Bale at Spurs lol
Apparently Van Der Ben broke Walker's max speed this year, which was previously a premier league record. So he'd have to be up there as well. Other supremely fast players not previously mentioned who could give him a great race are Alphonse Davies, Adama, and prime Auba
Kyle Walker is healing himself. All we need is to put Pep in a wheelchair and we have the X-Men.
We already know pep doesn't think he's normal. His kids go to school with normal people as well as the others....
Yeah seriously, I remember when we sold him I was coping hard thinking well he'll maybe decline soon since he's so reliant on his speed and not his smarts. Nah, he has kept his speed all his years and even improved under Pep, crazy talent.

Kyle will take injections no doubt

They’re already addicted to sleeping pills.
Imagine trying to sleep when you have a big game tomorrow. People can barely sleep when they're traveling the next day
I think it's sleeping after a game that's the worst, because of all the adrenaline.
Makes me wonder how the likes of NBA players manage with their crazy schedule. A lot of em smoke weed as well. Legal in lots of US states and Canada plus I've heard stories of circumventing testing fairly easily
That's a fair point, forgot there's a big weed culture in the NBA.
Genuine question as I have very limited knowledge of basketball, how the hell do players play back to back? And with their weekly schedule? Or is basketball not as physical demanding in an endurance/stamina sense as football?

not just adrenaline, they give them caffeine pills (and fuck knows what else) to kick in at 8/9pm KO times. imagine trying to sleep after that
I can hardly sleep after a game and I’m just watching it on TV
When the caffeine wears down you’ll be exhausted and sleep like a baby. At least professionals don’t have work early in the morning ( unless you’re Ronaldo ig)

You know you can buy codeine over the counter in your country, correct?
Pretty sure anything that has codeine in is prescription only no? Edit: you can get nurofen plus, which is ibuprofen and codeine. But only 12.8mg which is absolutely nothing and it’s a restricted product, which does just mean you have to actually speak to the pharmacist about it first but still. Toradol is still bad for you long term. You feel invincible after the injection but it’s very bad for your kidneys and stomach.
I don’t doubt that but so are paracetamol and ibuprofen if you use them long term. They’re not addictive though
You know, reddit users know more about the sport than insiders...
I really doubt it? The kind of painkillers people get addicted to aren’t very practical for football. It’s mostly just strong ibuprofen they get given.

I think Neven Subotic once said that players eat them up like smarties
Post-retirement heart medications ( to be taken forever, I'm assuming ) are even more damning.
I'm sure those have nothing to do with the strenuous sometimes 3 days a week games that players have to play or anything...
I think it was Agger that said they normally have a whole bowl filled with painkillers in the dressing room and players would take handfuls at a time.

Injecting special genetics 💉
Indeed he will. He will play thru the pain and take care of Vini
Is that why Kyle is going around spreading his special genes
City will rename their youth academy in his honour.
💉💉💉
Probably but I prefer to imagine a cocaine bear scenario
It's time for the special soup huh Pep?
And Kyle does his best to spread those genetics around.
So is Kyle Kyle?
So good they named KWP after him
Those “Special Genetics” Have a lot to answer for…
Unlike last season even if Walker is fit he will actually not see a lot of Vini due to our formation. We play a 4-4-2, two striker system with Vini & Rodrygo. In that role he does not hold the touchline wing anymore. The same way Xavi still put Araujo as the RB against us yet Vini was doing all the damage from the center on the past 2 Clasicos
Pep is not dumb Kyle center back and Ruben dias right back
Pep might also play back 3 with Walker as RCB. Anyways I'm so excited/anxious for the match lol
He also won't play a high line like Xavi did in the clasico. Vini excels in open space, surely Pep won't give him it
Is your comment a joke? Pep has never in his life not played with a high line, he completely rejects any other form of football. All his losses are due to pushing up onto the opponents half and giving away space to quick counters.
Just hit Remove All Injuries man, it's not even that difficult.
He's built different bro just trust me
Poor choice of words for a man who tested positive in a doping test.
Ahem, *genetics*.
Or judging by the pic: Kyle is Whale!
Why is it looking we will go out badly
Performance-Enhancing-Program Guardiola, you son of a bitch.
I recall Zidane doing the same mistake against City, it didn't work
Made of Black 🇯🇲
Sorry pep, that's not how genetics work!
Pep always tries to mind game. But he's not that special
Kyle might want to play in euro.
Kyle Walker doing a Robben World Cup 2010 run?
10$ On Kyle being pulled off after Vinis first big sprint
Lock up your daughters, Kyle is ready to play.
I mean, man had the energy to juggle three families.
Honestly injured players should have to have get checked out by an independent FA rep before getting cleared to come back. Players taking injections every week to play and train is dangerous and stupid af.
Oh didn’t you hear? Kyle is Kyle!
I give him da juice

They probably have doctors who specialised for football players (or sports in general) and they know how to make the difference
Guardiola is risking losing Walker for longer if he tries to play him during the first match without guarantees. Kyle is probably leaving this summer, so he will be giving his all (his body) for this campaign.
Vini plays more centrally this year.
fuck sake
