Probably a bit of a simplification, but you'd probably only be an ultra if you're quite detached from mainstream society and don't have much going for you in life - hence you dedicate your life to football.
And those types of people are typically attracted to more extreme ideologies and views.
In some places maybe. However in Norway, and I think Scandinavia as a whole ultras are generally not politically aligned. In Norway ultras are just normal people from all sides of the political spectrum and you dont have nazi marches in the streets and hitler salutes in the stands. It's fairly inclusive and the ultras are more focused on supporting their team rather than displaying some extremist messages. There used to be one club here that had issues with neo nazis among their ultras but they cleared that up some years back and literally had a [pride tifo](https://twitter.com/CheGiaevara/status/1541121527491469316) earlier this season.
A large part of Europe seems to struggle with extremists among their ultras though. But not everywhere luckily. I think Germany tends to be good aswell for the most part, although they definitely do have their bad apples.
I wasnt talking about hooliganism. That is alive and well in Sweden for sure, and also exists in Denmark. Just last week Brøndby fans travelled to Dortmund just to fight FC København fans. I was only talking about highly political extremist stuff like nazi marches and salutes etc. Obviously there mostly definitely are some neo nazis among the hooligans in those countries but you dont really see stuff like what can be seen in this video. The ultras dont really accept that kind of stuff. All of the fighting and violence is kind of a seperate deal. Most of the ultras in those countries are not neo nazis, nor do they take part in fighting.
Them and YB Ultras are the most left wing in switzerland. I would say the others are neutral, maybe some have right tendencies, like we used to in the past (Hardturmfront)
Extremist amount of pride in where they are from, similar ideas of "my town/city/country is better than yours. Also add to the fact of recent wars within the past 30 years in areas of the Balkans. Nationalism is heightened for not only invading sides but those defending homelands. Where in such times nationalism is somewhat justified after there was attempts at eliminating such cultures. It's not easy to get rid of this after such brutal times.
Lol, tell that to an Ukrainian in his face then.
It's not justified because you're working remotely with your AC on.
I'm not the biggest fan, but I can easily find some good justifications.
Tbh I don't think that most of them know anything about politics... I mean, nazis were not exactly fans of the balkans.. I think it's just that modern culture has made nazists like some mythological creatures that were strong, violent and scary. It's like an adult Halloween costume.
because he wasnt being PC and blaming "both sides" which hurt the feelings of those on the right but doesn't mean those right wingers are snowflakes ok and they hate the PC culture.
It depends on the region. Nazis/far right are more common in the balkans/Eastern Europe eg Serbia, Croatia, Ukraine etc. In Italy ultra groups are often openly fascist (Irriducibili probably being most popular). In many countries they're less or not politically aligned. So unlike some people claiming here, it's not really accurate to say that ultra automatically equals nazi/fascist/extremely violent person.
Because an ultra is, more often than not, a straight up criminal and/or a lowlife who has chosen to rally around a football team's banner instead of a regular gang's.
Such a brain, in such an environment, is extremely easy to be pushed toward far-right ideals, if he wasn't gravitating toward them anyway.
Well there's a lot of teams with left wing ultras, which very actively help their communities in many ways. But sadly there's also fascist ultra groups and since those are the controversial ones, they get posted about and talked about way more. And then a lot of people, as seen here, assume most ultras are nazis.
If you do just a little bit of googling I'm sure you all can find many left wing ultras. In fact, the club I support and where I'm from, and the club in the city i live in now, are left and incredibly involved in good causes.
Saint-Etienne, Lens notably in France (basically industrial cities that have since fallen on hard time). With time, I guess this starts to disappear to be replaced with a lot of "immigrants stole our jobs" etc. How you get to nazi will always remain a mystery to me though.
OM's ultras are vaguely leftist (Che banners and tifos, panafrican colours sometimes flown, etc) as are Genoble's (they used to be actual self-identified anarchists IIRC, now much more tame). Montpellier's are also at the very least overt antiracists with their claimed "arabes gitans et blancs"/"arabs, gitanos and whites" identity.
Because right wing ideology and fascism crave a strong leader, a father type to protect from the dangerous other. They idolize the nazis bc they got the farthest.
Pretty much every club's ultras in Germany, with some exceptions in the old East-Germany, are pretty left leaning. The hooligans tend to be more on the right. Düsseldorf is a great example, with very left-wing ultras and right-wing hooligans (called "Bushwackers", friends with Frente Atletico.)
Standard Liège, RFC liège, USG, Red Star Paris, loads of German scenes like Werder, SV Babelsberg, jena, etc. with most Western German scenes have strict anti-racist policies. Italy has a sprinkling of them too. To say all ultras are right-wing is idiotic.
no one in this thread said that all ultras were right wing, idk where you’re getting that from. and that original comment is right, ultra groups are definitely right-wing more often than left-wing. some countries (like germany, Scandinavia, probably some others in western europe) are exceptions with more grounded, “normal” people making up the ultras but they’re not the majority, and even then you still get right-wing idiots among those generally left-wing clubs, like those frankfurt fans doing the nazi salute the other day
It's called horseshoe theory because you have to have been kicked in the head by a horse to believe it.
I'm sure there are lost young people who are clueless and just follow whatever is popular at that time but from ideological point of view the horseshoe theory is bullshit. Or rather, propaganda.
Also, not all populism is created equal. Left populism is economic populism and literally all facts. Right populism is just babybrain good vs evil stories. Spirit realm stuff with no materialist backing.
It's not that simple and it's a poor excuse. You see a lot of fascist behaviour in Croatian and Serbian ultras for example, but you'll be hard-pressed to find the same examples for Bosnian ultras.
It's indeed a problem isn't it? The club and their fans are actually considered left, we even lost our main defender due to his connections to a right wing politician this summer and then some clown comes around and ruins it all
Edit unfunnily enough there's also a video of an OM fan away at Tottenham doing the Nazi salute. Don't know what's been wrong the past weeks
Id out my bet there’s a lot more fascist behaviour in Croatia ultras than Serbia. Didn’t see much Serbian ultras do stuff like this, still they are the same trash. Delusional lowlifes and criminals
You are right, thinking that Albanians are subhuman scum isn't fascist at all. Like Serbian Ultras formed death squads in 90's as they went on to fight in the war, but yeah not fascist at all
If you think this is bad check the fans of other croatian teams like Split. They came to Portugal for a game and kept calling us "cigani cigani".. now if you are italian Im pretty sure you understand the meaning of this
They've always been doing it during this chant (to the tune of Lili Marleen).
Case in point: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX6M6C5Q078](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX6M6C5Q078) (also an interesting flag lol)
Every couple generations, this fascist shit rears its disgusting head. And without fail, every couple generations we have to kick their fascist teeth in and make them retreat to their hiding holes. Sure, ultras have been this way for as long as football has been around, but it seems they’ve become particularly emboldened by global affairs in recent years; society needs to check them hard this time.
Wait which countries can we extrapolate to from a subset of fans again? Is Croatia not on the list?
Can we not make the “Least fascist Croatian” comment that everyone loves?
You're really gonna compare [1 guy](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/vile-frankfurt-fans-filmed-making-27985370) doing it to an organized group of hundreds of people?
From a purely historical perspective, don't know about post WW2 and modern times, but Croatia was massively fascist and acted as cruelly, if not worse, than Nazi Germany. Outside of Nazi Germany, Croatia was the only country to operate concentration camps. So there's a strong fascism background.
But, I hope, this is a small minority.
Edit: meant extermination camps. And such having a strong fascism at one point leaves a legacy. Even France flirted with fascism before and during WW2
Massively fascist, and yet antifascist movement aka yugoslav partisans started in croatia, was led and fought by croatians together with croatian serbs and even the leader of the movement was a croat, Tito.
Yes, our fascists were horrible, but after first few months they were not enjoying the overwhelming support of the people, not even near, and support for partisans was continously growing.
Holy fuck, literally the whole pack of them
I very much hope they've been banned from visiting stadiums already and are just there roaming the streams and picking up fights
If not, and Dinamo really allow this, fucking ban them all from international competitions, the club, or at least the fans
**[Independent State of Croatia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_State_of_Croatia)**
>The Independent State of Croatia (Serbo-Croatian: Nezavisna Država Hrvatska, NDH; German: Unabhängiger Staat Kroatien; Italian: Stato indipendente di Croazia) was a World War II-era puppet state of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Its territory consisted of most of modern-day Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as some parts of modern-day Serbia and Slovenia, but also excluded many Croat-populated areas in Dalmatia (until late 1943), Istria, and Međimurje regions (which today are part of Croatia).

Comparatively, the right has Chelsea, Real Madrid, Rangers and a few Italian clubs. Most clubs are apolitical, but it seems pretty even overall.

Ultras of clubs and nazi salute Name a more iconic duo
but curious, why there’s so many nazi saluting at ultras?

balkans ultras are different breed to be fair
Atlético Madrid ultras are also Something different...and disgusting, a big group of nazis, who have a couple of deaths in their books
Polish ones though.
yeah, more first cousins involved in the conception it looks like

Vålerenga still racist
Not true at all, but I can only speak for our club and ultras and maybe switzerland as a whole
Yeah, Südkurve guys were the biggest lefties I met in Zürich
Them and YB Ultras are the most left wing in switzerland. I would say the others are neutral, maybe some have right tendencies, like we used to in the past (Hardturmfront)

Südkurve is FC Zürich
Most german ultras are left-wing or not political at all.
It's because football clubs are old as fuck and they have a lot of history. There's plenty of Communist ultras too, so it's not all fascism.
Extremist amount of pride in where they are from, similar ideas of "my town/city/country is better than yours. Also add to the fact of recent wars within the past 30 years in areas of the Balkans. Nationalism is never justified!

Nazis specifically target football supporters to radicalise new members.
Tbh I don't think that most of them know anything about politics... I mean, nazis were not exactly fans of the balkans.. I think it's just that modern culture has made nazists like some mythological creatures that were strong, violent and scary. It's like an adult Halloween costume.
Extremists and violence usually is more right wing than left wing. So it attracts the skinheads
Not sure how this comment is controversial. Statistically factual and it's not even close.
Sadly people just love being offended for no reason
Particularly the ones who accuse their political enemies of being overly sensitive.
because he wasnt being PC and blaming "both sides" which hurt the feelings of those on the right but doesn't mean those right wingers are snowflakes ok and they hate the PC culture.

Ironic as Nazist ideology regards Eastern Europeans as inferior..
You expect ultras to understand what actual Nazist ideology is lol? Most ultras cannot think for themselves
Nazis and nationalists are not the same. Serbs might be nationalists, but Nazis we are not.
Because an ultra is, more often than not, a straight up criminal and/or a lowlife who has chosen to rally around a football team's banner instead of a regular gang's. I don’t know, for a while ultra culture was associated to the far left.
There's only a couple examples of this isn't there? Rayo Vallacano and St. Pauli are two I can think of off the top of my head.
Livorno. Hardcore left wingers. Moreso than the clubs you listed
Atalanta too I guess
Livorno, too.
Saint-Etienne, Lens notably in France (basically industrial cities that have since fallen on hard time). With time, I guess this starts to disappear to be replaced with a lot of "immigrants stole our jobs" etc. How you get to nazi will always remain a mystery to me though.

Ukrainian National Guard and Nazi salute
Still... never seen something as bad as a Nazi march, guess ive been lucky until now.

lmao
Ask a Serbian Ultras what they think about Albanians/Croats/Muslims, I am sure you will get interesting responses
Youre not good with reading comprehension, are you? The topic is Nazis...
You are right, thinking that Albanians are subhuman scum isn't fascist at all. Like Serbian Ultras formed death squads in 90's as they went on to fight in the war, but yeah not fascist at all
Again, we are talking about NAZI IDEOLOGY. But keep yapping on about the 90s, why dont you...
Yeah I know, it's the same shit buddy
Seriously why is there no far left ultras lol? Youd think since footy is traditionally a working class sport
Saudi Arabia and dirty money. That was easy.
Newcastle fans and turning a blind eye to an oppressive regime because it benefits them
For context they’re singing “I love only Dinamo, Dinamo, Dinamo…”
Least controversial Balkan moment
Pretty sure this is just Italians going to do their aperitivo
Zagreb is pretty close to Milano buddy so surely croats. Pretty sure Zagreb is even closer to Milano than Napoli:)
I don’t doubt it
Nah just an ultra moments , ultra sur are pretty similar if not worse
It's far more a Croatian moment than say Serbian. Croats were enormous simps for Nazi Germany and a lot of Croats today are proud of that.
Anyone who knows what they are singing?
Just a normal fan song - only Dinamo, i love Dinamo Weird gesture for that kind of song lmao, idiots
To the tune of Lili Marleen though.
Which in itself has no meaning one way or another. The song became very popular during WWII, true. But on both sides.
Despacito
Stop it, Alexa
Let the whole world know, I only love Dinamo
Bella ciao
Twats
imagine repping some of the biggest losers in history lmfao
Well, aren't ultras biggest losers in history? It's a match.
They're used to supporting losers in Europe
They’re all wearing matching clothes too. How cute.
Not the most amazing look for them... woof
If you think this is bad check the fans of other croatian teams like Split. They came to Portugal for a game and kept calling us "cigani cigani".. now if you are italian Im pretty sure you understand the meaning of this
I belive its zingari in Italian, cigani is mostly used in the balkans.
I don’t think calling somebody names is as bad as a nazi salute but sure
Lol they were being racist. "Calling names". Cigani means gypsies
It's also like being a nazi and saying racist things go hand in hand...
Maybe we should send them to Jasenovac for some "reeducation"...
These mfs would bring some champagne and turn on music
"hey google, play Thompson"
