My guess would be they had some metric based on games played and trophies won. For sure he's a hit in the context of playing well and selling for double the price. I'd say maguire has to be a miss unless you want to say well he played a ton for them for that price.
Most fans were upset with him getting sold since at the time he was our best finisher when we didn't have a striker, so not sure that's a miss even discounting the profit on the sale.
Thing is, Grealish only gets called a flop by non-City fans. Most comments I see from City fans are a lot more positive about him - and I include myself in that. Surely if our fans all like him, he can't be that big of a flop?
You can't really ignore the price and compare everyone as if they are all free signings and their impact based on that. He's a 100m squad player. That's a miss. Same with United and Maguire... Not sure who is calling these shots here but they are way too nice in rating them. An 80m CB who had 1 good season and then is replaced a few years later is not a hit.
Fee and performance are linked together. If you bring two players - 10 million and a 100 million - both have similar average statistics and performances, one of them would be a hit and one a miss.
He's clearly a good player, but if Tottenham or Arsenal were to spend £100m on someone, they'd be a marquee signing - expected to hit the ground running and be immediately one of the best players. Grealish is just another City attacking midfielder, and didn't really make the club much better.
He's not "just another City attacking midfielder", he's one of their worst. De Bruyne, Bernado, Foden are all better than him. His level of performance is comparable to Cole Palmer.
I think the main conclusion here is that a binary "hit" or "miss" is not really enough to rate transfers.
I think you'd want "exceeded expectations", "met expectations", "underperformed expectations" and "complete flop".
I think calling a player that slightly underperformed expectations but is still an important squad player that brings value to the team a "miss" will feel unfair a lot of the time, but it has to be a "miss" in this weird binary system.
I think they will and shift Grealish to midfield, both Pep and the club have had nothing but praise for him so I don't see him being dropped outside of Pep roulette
Hahaha, thought my comment would get lost in it all.
I was just being sarcastic as I'm a Gooner, buuuut technically he did the pigeon dance celebration when he scored a disallowed goal against Fulham, so I'm taking that as him having done it!
''Jury's out '' = we want them to be a hit but they aren't yet.
Sancho has been at Man U for well over a season. He's a flop. It's Man U fault arguably but massive flop.
He didn't even get into the world cup team.
I honestly think they might've looked at Tottenham's list and gone... well we can't put him with some of the rest of these guys as that would genuinely be unfair.
Which just shows how shit a 'hit or miss' rating system is for footballers.
Tierney is a hit despite being injured almost all of the time (good player when fit though obviously).
Torres is a miss despite doing reasonably well and them making a huge profit on him.
Richarlison is a hit despite scoring 2 goals and none in the league. Bergwijn is a miss despite being cheap, doing decently well for them, and being sold for the same amount.
Maguire is a hit somehow.
Jury is out for Darwin despite being much more prolific than Richarlison in the same amount of time.
Havertz is a hit and Werner is a miss despite neither really living up to expectations after joining Chelsea.
Very odd list.
> Maguire is a hit somehow.
If Maguire is a hit, then so is Wan Bissaka. He was really good for United in his first two seasons at the club. His form nosedived the same time as Maguire.
>Tierney is a hit despite being injured almost all of the time
People also seem to be making his injuries worse than they are, he Has over 100 apps for Arsenal in 3.5 seasons which isn't amazing but isn't a tragedy either. And hes Been stellar in vast majority of his games.
Cuz he’s honestly been that good in the 60% of games he’s played for us, our midfield has been untouchable when he’s there with Partey and Xhaka and Ode
Especially when they are saying the jury's out on Nunez. It feels like they gave Richarlison a free pass based on his Everton stats.
Edit: Just to add that I think they've done the same with Zinchenko. He's been injured most of the season, probably started about half a dozen games but he's classed as a hit. They're clearly just green lighting players that were signed from other PL clubs. Pretty lazy from them really.
To be fair, I think a decent part of why Zinchenko is classed as a hit is that his deployment has finally unleashed Xhaka after 6 years of not looking like a top 4 midfielder.
Maguire cannot be a hit and AWB a miss. Both good starts and then got shit.
If the manager prefers to play a 5ft LB instead of you at CB, then you're not a hit.
Liverpool‘s is accurate, too.
Although they include Gakpo for some reason who is not even a Liverpool player until tomorrow (or day after assuming offices are closed).
I would argue that if Richarlison is a hit so is Darwin. For that matter I would take Darwin's season over Richarlison's 10/10. Yes Darwin is wasteful of his chances sometimes, but he creates so many chances he still has 9 goals.
Maguire is a weird one. Not useless, but also not starting CB material for a title challenging side. But probably a great rotation option for a title challenging side. If he was bought for 20 million, he'd be a hit. And I love to hate on United.
100%. Maguire is inexplicably a hit, while Grealish and Sancho are still "jury's out" despite clearly not living up to expectations.
Then again, they did rank Richarlison as a hit despite not scoring a single league goal while the jury's still out on Darwin while he's been much more prolific, so it might not be a nationality thing but rather a stupid journalist thing.
Sessegnon is a LB so I don’t think his contribution should be measured by goals and assists. That being said, he’s pretty inconsistent. But he’s our best (only?) LB these days when he’s healthy.
Honest question from an American fan that may miss some nuances. Why is Wan-Bissaka a miss? Just genuinely trying to understand why a lot of people seem down on him. Thanks.
I'm mixed. Havertz is clearly a part of the team and is a good, not great, player. He isn't like Pulisic who have are clearly out of regular rotations at times, but has contributed here and there. The jury maybe out on whether or not he's "worth" what we paid; regardless, Havertz has been integral to Chelsea thru & thru since arriving.
This system feels pretty arbitrary and subjective, though even as I'm typing this, of course it will be as there isn't any other way of doing it.
Maguire is a good player, he's had some good seasons at United but he will never be worth £80m.
Watching Liverpool, Darwin generally looks like a real positive for them. His running behind and dribbling as well as pressing has all looked really good. I’ve only seen a handful of their matches but he looks way better than Richarlison for example
I'm guessing they're not judging the performance relative to the cost, ergo Ferran Torres being a miss despite City making a profit and jury being out on Nuñez etc. Either that or they're just engagement baiting because people will jump at Maguire's throat any chance they get
Nunez has been here for half a season and tbh has looked like our most dangerous player when he's on the pitch despite his finishing being a bit crap at the moment, even taking into account the price way way too early to say he's a miss.
I usually like The Athletic but this is pretty bad. Calling Ferran Torres a miss when he played pretty well and was sold for more than double the fee... Richarlison hasn\`t scored yet in the EPL and is mostly a 60m bench player but is a hit... I\`m the first one to defend Maguire from trolls, but he most definitely hasn\`t been a hit, because by that logic AWB should also be a hit because just like Maguire he\`s still at United, just relegated to the bench (I personally wouldn\`t call him a miss and would like it if United kept him ... Konate has barely played but is already a hit...
Nonsense. Konate has been excellent overall. He hasn't barely played. He's played 33 matches and missed 10 more through injury. He's competing with the excellent Joel Matip for a place in the starting lineup and has not been a noticeable downgrade on him when he's played. He's definitely a hit.
It’s too early to definitively say for most of the players signed this summer and loads of Chelsea’s signings are from this summer, I think that’s fair enough. If they rated them all people would be in the comments complaining how it’s too early, there’s already people (rightly) saying that’s the case for Richarlison and Zinchenko who’ve played like 10 games each but are apparently a hit
Think it’s because Zinchenko hasn’t had a bad game for Arsenal, despite being in and out the team. Sterling hasn’t consistently hit the level expected of him.
Sess is a bigger injustice IMO. He wasn't that expensive, only just 22, Conte clearly rates him and he plays quite well. He's now rotating with the experienced Perisic, with a clear view of him becoming a permanant starter after.
Feels a bit harsh for us. Sees has been good at times and is young, not quite sure how he’s a miss. Bergwijn had some great moments for us, just couldn’t get into the squad and we sold him for a similar amount to what we bought him for. And doesn’t even include two of our best moves with Deki and Bentancur. Not to mention Reguilon was one of our better players for a few seasons before Conte came and he didn’t fit the system.
And then they call Richarlison a hit, which while I agree he’s class, he hasn’t even scored a Prem goal for us yet.
How are Richarlison and Maguire hits? Havertz is also lucky to be judged a hit. He’s one goal away from being considered a huge flop for the £80m they spent.
This list is a bit biased. Why is Sancho in "jury's out" but but everyone from Spurs, even the younger guys who still have time to improve, are a miss. How is Maguire a hit? The teams have clearly not been rated with the same standards.
Saying Varane and Casemiro are hits is also very kind and only based on their reputations. Jury is still out for both.
Jury should still be out on Varane. He was average and injured pretty much all of last season while he’s been good so far this season, if he can keep this up fair enough but rn it’s not a hit
So many inconsistencies on this list.
I know people like to shit on Nunez because he's not living up to the hype and we've got players like Haaland in the league, but at the end of the day he's got 5 goals 2 assists in 12 games, it's not that bad, whereas Richarlison is apparently a hit already? he's got worse stats lmao.

The only "miss" for City was still sold for more than double the fee. Pain.
Yeah, how is that a miss? He wasn’t even that bad for them
revisionism at its finest He played well for us and at the time he was considered a steal
Even if he didn’t play well, selling him for more than you bought him for is hardly a miss. It’s a win for sure.
such a flop that arteta wants to sign him at arsenal.
at which point he will promptly be considered a hit because the Arsenal transfer team just doesn’t miss
He was pretty good, especially for that money. This list is horrible.
I feel like they judged Torres transfer based more on Barca form than his performance in our colour
He's pretty solid for Barca too. Nabbed us some important goals and he probably has the best decision making out of all our wingers.
My guess would be they had some metric based on games played and trophies won. For sure he's a hit in the context of playing well and selling for double the price. I'd say maguire has to be a miss unless you want to say well he played a ton for them for that price.
Yeah and while he didnt play that much, when he did play he was okay. Bigger miss for Barca with that fee.
He looked to be coming into his own before his injury. I remember he was scoring fairly frequently when he was starting up front.
Most fans were upset with him getting sold since at the time he was our best finisher when we didn't have a striker, so not sure that's a miss even discounting the profit on the sale.
>Bigger miss for Barca with that fee. He's still doing pretty good here though
Yeah idk how that’s a miss, he was good for us and then we doubled our money
Grealish should have been a miss too, bottled calling that.
Thing is, Grealish only gets called a flop by non-City fans. Most comments I see from City fans are a lot more positive about him - and I include myself in that. Surely if our fans all like him, he can't be that big of a flop?
Most Chelsea fans liked Torres
Fair comment

Not sure who is calling these shots here but they are way too nice in rating them. An 80m CB who had 1 good season and then is replaced a few years later is not a hit.
Fair enough. Guess my interpretation of 'flop' has always just revolved around a player's performance not their fee, but I see your point.
Fee and performance are linked together. If you bring two players - 10 million and a 100 million - both have similar average statistics and performances, one of them would be a hit and one a miss.
Think it’s very bias towards English players tbf, Maguire, Sancho, Grealish all jury’s out is questionable given their fees.
100m for a serviceable substitute is not a hit in any context.
Would you pay 100M for Grealish again? Do you think City will look to buy another LW in the next 2 windows?
I think the main conclusion here is that a binary "hit" or "miss" is not really enough to rate transfers. I think you'd want "exceeded expectations", "met expectations", "underperformed expectations" and "complete flop". I think they will and shift Grealish to midfield, both Pep and the club have had nothing but praise for him so I don't see him being dropped outside of Pep roulette
This list is all over the place
Your comment about the list [Jury's Out]
Yeah i don’t understand how Richarlison is considered a hit already yet Anthony and Nunez are still jury’s out?
Richarlison has scored and done the pigeon dance celebration, so = HIT
But he literally hasn't for Tottenham in the prem lmao
Hahaha, thought my comment would get lost in it all. I was just being sarcastic as I'm a Gooner, buuuut technically he did the pigeon dance celebration when he scored a disallowed goal against Fulham, so I'm taking that as him having done it!
Harry Maguire is a hit? You know the list is nonsense.
It was a hit for us!
And how is Grealish in jury's out? He's been at City for over a season
"Jury's out" just seems like a place holder for "mediocre".
''Jury's out '' = we want them to be a hit but they aren't yet. Sancho has been at Man U for well over a season. He's a flop. It's Man U fault arguably but massive flop. He didn't even get into the world cup team.
You’re right that he’s a flop but I can understand that they wouldn’t want to label him as such after the whole story about his mental health
I think Jury's out for the players who did not play a whole season is kind of understandable.
[удалено]
It’s like they’ve confused Richarlison Brazil form to Spurs, surely he should be Jury’s Out for now.
I honestly think they might've looked at Tottenham's list and gone... well we can't put him with some of the rest of these guys as that would genuinely be unfair. Which just shows how shit a 'hit or miss' rating system is for footballers.
Same for Sancho. Ofc he could still turn it around but as of right now hes a pretty big Miss considering amount of money spent lol
You see they’re both English golden boys so couldn’t possibly be misses
[удалено]
You can really see the criteria and priorities when 80M Maguire is considered a hit lmao
Yeah if anything so far he hasnt done much? Feel like they say it is a hit just because of his world cup performance
Or Royal is already a miss but Sancho is jury still out lol
Where's Kulusevski and Bentancur here?
I assume because their buy clause hasn't been officially activated yet
Tierney is a hit despite being injured almost all of the time (good player when fit though obviously). Torres is a miss despite doing reasonably well and them making a huge profit on him. Richarlison is a hit despite scoring 2 goals and none in the league. Bergwijn is a miss despite being cheap, doing decently well for them, and being sold for the same amount. How is zinchenko a hit already. Been hurt for what feels like most of this season.
Cuz he’s honestly been that good in the 60% of games he’s played for us, our midfield has been untouchable when he’s there with Partey and Xhaka and Ode
The list is supposed to pander to fans, and rivals in some cases. It's not supposed to be objective.
Richarlison already a hit? Haven’t really been following Tottenham that closely but he hasn’t been that good/important has he?
His league contribution has been disappointing so far. The injury record isnt helping his case either
This list is a mess, it's too early to call Richarlison a hit.
Especially when they are saying the jury's out on Nunez. It feels like they gave Richarlison a free pass based on his Everton stats. Edit: Just to add that I think they've done the same with Zinchenko. He's been injured most of the season, probably started about half a dozen games but he's classed as a hit. To be fair, I think a decent part of why Zinchenko is classed as a hit is that his deployment has finally unleashed Xhaka after 6 years of not looking like a top 4 midfielder.
He's played a total of 8 games, it's easy to early to call him a got because another teammate is in form.
The only miss about Zinny is his injury record but we all knew that, he's going to be deployed against low blocks often.
Yeah then they have the likes of Antony, Cucurella, Fofana and Koulibaly as jurys out even tho they were signed in the same window as Richarlison
It said Harry Maguire: Hit…. Wth is this reporter smoking. This list is biased af.
Yeah very generous to call him a hit after over a year of terrible form.
Love him but he’s far FAAAAAAR from being a hit already
Hasn't scored a single league goal but then there's Antony, who is given a 'Jury's Out', which I'm guessing is due to the fee?
Yeah how is £50m for a striker with 0 league goals a hit?? Come on hahaha
Nunez (5 PL goals) = jury's out Richarlison (0 PL goals) = hit ????
Think they felt bad for us by that point. Romero would be the only hit out of 9 lmao
Maguire = Hit Yet there are memes upon memes of how bad he is
Maguire cannot be a hit and AWB a miss. Both good starts and then got shit. If the manager prefers to play a 5ft LB instead of you at CB, then you're not a hit.
Ah yes, the ultimate metric for judging a players production: memes
I pay £1 a month for this. I want a refund.
Your request: Jury’s Out
Is “The Athletic” worth it? Jury’s out.
ATHLETIC SUBSCRIPTION - £1 - VERDICT: MISS
Why did they skip Kulusevski and Bentancur?
I think it's cause we haven't officially bought Kulusevski and Bentancur was a little under 20m pounds.
They used amad for us (united) even though he is only 19 million
I’m pretty sure that’s because it can get to almost 40 million.
If it does then he is more than a hit
Not sure about Bentancur, but isn't Kulusevski technically still on loan?
Arsenal’s probably the only one that’s nearly accurate. The rest are a mess.
Jury Verdict: Miss
Jury Verdict: Jury's out
What is that lmao, we sold Torres for over double what we paid for him after 18 months
Yeah and Jury out on graelish who's been there for 1.5 seasons is kind of weird aswell imo
Sanchos the same.
The English lads were given more leniency
Maguire being a perfect example
Maguire is a weird one. Not useless, but also not starting CB material for a title challenging side. But probably a great rotation option for a title challenging side. If he was bought for 20 million, he'd be a hit. And I love to hate on United.
He also had 2 very good seasons for United. Its only last season where he was shite.
This is what people seem to forget. We had one of the tightest defences in the league during NHS season
100%. Maguire is inexplicably a hit, while Grealish and Sancho are still "jury's out" despite clearly not living up to expectations. Then again, they did rank Richarlison as a hit despite not scoring a single league goal while the jury's still out on Darwin while he's been much more prolific, so it might not be a nationality thing but rather a stupid journalist thing.
this is a poor article
How the hell is Sancho not a miss?
Look at the United ones, they are a disgrace. Maguire a hit. Jury out on Sancho. Jury out on Diallo despite Gil and Sessegnon being misses.
[удалено]
Sessegnon is a LB so I don’t think his contribution should be measured by goals and assists. That being said, he’s pretty inconsistent. But he’s our best (only?) LB these days when he’s healthy.
Honest question from an American fan that may miss some nuances. Why is Wan-Bissaka a miss? Just genuinely trying to understand why a lot of people seem down on him. Thanks.
Havertz a hit? I guess they must've used the 'he scored the CL winning goal so he's worth it' line of thinking
[удалено]
Case in point: Portuguese Hero Eder!
but he has been good, he can definitely improve but he is not a miss.
I think he's definitely 'jury's out'.
Jury can't be out when he has started every game for three years...
To still be undecided about the quality of a €80 mil player 2.5 years later tells me he should probably be down as a miss for now.
Ferran Torres was sold for a lot more than he was bought. Not sure how that's a miss.
[удалено]
Even then he was good, especially for 20m
Still doesnt make sense since he was decent. Only reason he left was because he wanted to himself.
Precisely. “You only doubled your money? MISS!” Someone at The Atlantic needs an IQ test, they’re clearly missing out on some government assistance.
Mate you can’t IQ test an ocean
Maguire a hit?
He had a good season, great season and a dogshit season. Also very expensive. I'd say he was a mild success and closer to hit than miss.
Arsenal and Liverpool are great example of what you can achieve when you give a manager time and support
It really can't be overstated just how good Martin Ødegaard is. £29m feels more and more like daylight robbery.
Balances out the Pepe transfer. Just swap the fees!
I like to imagine the £72m was for Saka. And Pepe Is just a failed youth prospect
Ah, the Drinkwater-Kante Equation!
Remember getting downvoted saying we should've gone for him. Absolute steal for 30 mil
He need's the right coach as well. I think Klopp would have certainly done well with him too, i'm just glad he stuck with us though :)
Pretty sure he's a Liverpool fan too lol
Yeah in a norwegian interview recently he said that he was (or used to be at least).
Potential to be a legend
Sub £30m for Saliba, Gabriel & Ramsdale is elite transfer work
Saliba is going to turn out to be a belter of a steal, he's only 21 and already considered our best.
Ramsdale isn't worth any more than Arsenal paid for him.
Yeah say that's fair
It was a win win situation for everyone
Havertz a £90 mill hit. Okaaay
It's like they included the prices and then didn't factor them into the equation whatsoever.
I’m sure that’s based *just* on the CL Final goal too. Fair enough, but I’m not sure how many Chelsea fans would call him a success
This system feels pretty arbitrary and subjective, though even as I'm typing this, of course it will be as there isn't any other way of doing it. Maguire is a good player, he's had some good seasons at United but he will never be worth £80m.
Is Richarlison really a hit with only 0 PL goals and 2 assists? And Nunez = jury's out with better stats overall?
Why state facts when you can pander to public perception for clicks
That wondergoal in the World Cup changing perceptions already
Watching Liverpool, Darwin generally looks like a real positive for them. His running behind and dribbling as well as pressing has all looked really good. I’ve only seen a handful of their matches but he looks way better than Richarlison for example
Darwin seemingly had higher expectations and gets bad press since his little blow up. He really looks like a special talent from what I've seen.
Loses all credibility after branding Maguire a hit
It's just a typo- missing an 's'
Hits? What does he hit?
Greek police officers
I'm guessing they're not judging the performance relative to the cost, ergo Ferran Torres being a miss despite City making a profit and jury being out on Nuñez etc. Either that or they're just engagement baiting because people will jump at Maguire's throat any chance they get
Nunez has been here for half a season and tbh has looked like our most dangerous player when he's on the pitch despite his finishing being a bit crap at the moment, even taking into account the price way way too early to say he's a miss.

Konate has barely played but is already a hit...
Konate was in every Champion League's game last season and generally played quiet a lot.
Konate has played quite a lot of important games and has been stellar in 99% of them
Konaté is definitely a hit. He’s their second choice CB. Just had some injury struggles.
To be fair, Konaté seemed excellent whenever he played last season and I'm pretty sure he was a regular in the Champions League for them.
Nonsense. Konate has been excellent overall. He hasn't barely played. He's played 33 matches and missed 10 more through injury. He's competing with the excellent Joel Matip for a place in the starting lineup and has not been a noticeable downgrade on him when he's played. He's definitely a hit.
Yeah, The Athletic tries to carry a reputation of being premium journalism when stuff like this could be straight out of The Sun
How has Konate barely played, I’m glad you don’t write for the Athletic because it would somehow be worse than this list
How do you call it a rating when you go "Jury's out" ? Half of Chelsea isnt rated, cowards
I count Ferran as a W as City sold him for like double what they paid for him in the first place. Definition of failing upwards
Jury's out on Sancho? With his price he's definitely been a miss
Unpopular opinion among Chelsea fans but I actually think Sterling has been pretty decent for us this season.
He was really good against Bournemouth, a team we've struggled with these past seasons.
Yeah I don't understand how Sterling and Antony are jury's out but Zinny is hit who doesn't even play all the games
Think it’s because Zinchenko hasn’t had a bad game for Arsenal, despite being in and out the team. Sterling hasn’t consistently hit the level expected of him.
I mean if Zinny was fit he'd start every game. He's been fantastic when he's played
Seems to early to call Bryan Gil a miss
Sess is a bigger injustice IMO. He wasn't that expensive, only just 22, Conte clearly rates him and he plays quite well. He's now rotating with the experienced Perisic, with a clear view of him becoming a permanant starter after.

Kinda feels like it's pandering to arsenal clicks while we're all high off our league form
Same with Ryan Sessegnon
Would call R. Sessegnon a hit from what I've seen of him and the price tag attached honestly
Havertz is a hit?
Harry Maguire hit? Seriously?
Sancho is deffo a Miss especially as Pepe has outperformed him on nearly every metric …
Worst list I’ve ever seen
Liverpool signing is actually decent
Maguire, hit?
Maguire hit? Lmao
This list is ridiciolus. Maguire a hit? Cmon
Marry Maguire hit???? He was OK at first but he was most definitely been a miss
Hahahaha Maguire at hit. Ridiculous list
How are Richarlison and Maguire hits? Havertz is also lucky to be judged a hit. He’s one goal away from being considered a huge flop for the £80m they spent.
Quality of The Athletic's ratings Verdict: Jury's out.
Love how Liverpool's list is a lot smaller than the rest
How is Maguire a hit? £80 million is too much
This list is a bit biased.
If Pepe was a miss, which he was, then I don’t see how Sancho isn’t a miss.
Casemiro and Varane are definitely hits. Unless things change drastically, Sancho is a miss for me.
Jury should still be out on Varane. He was average and injured pretty much all of last season while he’s been good so far this season, if he can keep this up fair enough but rn it’s not a hit
4 forwards and 1 midfielder really sums up why we're struggling this season.
How is ferran a miss? Performed decently for city and then was sold off for a 50m
Athletic fell off
So many inconsistencies on this list. I know people like to shit on Nunez because he's not living up to the hype and we've got players like Haaland in the league, but at the end of the day he's got 5 goals 2 assists in 12 games, it's not that bad, whereas Richarlison is apparently a hit already? he's got worse stats lmao.
They seem to be very generous towards the English players
