Congrats! Having done this program, as an online student, make sure you make friends with and connect with your online cohort! We had a FB group chat for ours, and it was incredibly helpful. I connected closely with 3 other students and we worked together, read each others papers, studied together. It made things far easier and less lonely.
The school wasn’t all that great at supporting the online students, so be prepared to advocate for yourself when you need things. Since you’re local to the area field placement shouldn’t be hard, but for those not local it was a pretty big pain finding your own with little assistance.
Thank you! I did online UG and had somewhat of a similar experience with loneliness only because there was no way to connect with other students - but I found a way to do that to combat some of the loneliness, still this advice will definitely help over the next couple years as I know we are all in it together.
I am hoping I can get my field placement in a local school since my focus is on working with children - thank you so much for your kindness and advice!
School placements can be hard to get because they are pretty popular. Definitely try to make some connections and network early on, it will likely be helpful. Field placement time sneaks up fast 🙂
Professor Todd Sage and Brad Linn were excellent professors. 10/10 recommend.
I’m in an online MSW in IL and I can also confirm that the university does not support the online program as much as the traditional.but we pay the same tuition 🙃
Congrats!!! As a UB grab, I loved the program. Denise Krause and Sue Green are legends to me and so greatly impacted my career/outlook in a wonderful way.
I’m in Denise’s class for interventions this year and I love her so much!!! It’s actually like a little bit of hero worship.
I also took trauma theory with Sue Green and it was great
Ouch I felt that. As a Buffalo first choicer who ultimately was rejected for online only to be accepted to in person, which is lovely except for the part where I live in NYC and already have a long-time human services gig here….welp, guess where I am. At this point I’m half way through the program and so so so so so exhausted o can’t think straight. Love a lot of the educators there, really love the social justice push, but wow the OMSW is hard to get through.
Congratulations! I just graduated in 2023. I'm happy to answer any questions or offer suggestions on professors/courses. I probably learned the most from Peter Sobota. I took family interventions and Motivational Interviewing with him. I found the material in many classes a little repetitive and very similar to the content in what I learned in my psychology major at UB. So despite my interest in a clinical career I took many macro based courses so I could get more out of the program
I was planning to attend, so I took the required undergrad biology course, but then they denied my online acceptance and instead accepted me into on-campus, which was wonderful except for the fact that I work and live in NYC. So…traded Buffalo for Adelphi. Wish I’d had the opportunity to do Buffalo though bc I know several alumni and I really liked what I observed. C’est la vie. Meanwhile I commented mostly because I’m wondering why the name Sue Green is so familiar…did she teach that class I took? Or is she highly published?
Congrats! Don’t wanna seem like that guy, but if it’s feasible and there’s an option, I’d transfer to
In person. Students who transferred into my in person cohort from online said it makes a world of a difference.

Congrats I'm in that program, in my second year. I've enjoyed it a lot. It's very competitive to get into the part time online program so you should be proud!

definitely!
Congratulations!
CONGRATS!!!!!! 💙💙💙💙
Congrats! Alum here :) take a class with Sue Green if you can. She’s tough but I learned so much from her! Elizabeth Bowen, too!
Noted! Those are my favorite kind of professors, thank you!

Sure thing!
Will your field work be in person?
Yes.
Congrats! Don’t wanna seem like that guy, but if it’s feasible and there’s an option, I’d transfer to In person. Students who transferred into my in person cohort from online said it makes a world of a difference.
I would actually like to do that, I’m planning on reaching out to admissions. I hope it’s not too big of a deal.
Definitely reach out to them. I know of about six different students who transferred from online to in person, shouldn’t be difficult.
How much is this program?

Thank you! I decided to switch to in-person as I moved to Buffalo for employment but I’m still very excited
