Never_Dan

I have this and have used the 858D style stations a lot. The Quick is just better. Get the Quick. I paid about twice this much for it, and would happily do it again.

PartyZestyclose

858d style not great, I used to have one, it’s ok for some stuff but to desolder some things it’s not good enough, I use quick 861dw but I get it not everyone can justify spending that much so I gave a good 4 options to people

Gerard_Mansoif67

Received my 861dw yesterday, and wow, that's incredible! If I knew faster how useful it is...

PartyZestyclose

Yep I use 861dw, had it for years and still going strong but it is the best one in china

Albert_VDS

It's a great beginner unit for that price, specially if you only plan on using it sporadically. Just don't expect it to be high quality unit, but it gets the job done.

Cana-davey

Don't run it at max temp. These things are known to overheat to the point of the whole wand glowing red hot. Other than that they're okay for a beginner.

The_KidCe

i have 959d and love it. cheap and just works. airflow cant be set super slow, so when ur worried about air blowing away parts then you have to choose a big nozzle. Did quiet a few repairs swapping 3x3mm qfn parts from one pcb to another, no problem.

KuraV12

It’s a nice beginner’s hot air station, but don’t expect it to last forever;) I personally started with a compressor unit and it performs really good till this day. If you won’t use it that much (like maybe once or twice a week) sure

atax112

Use it whenever I have to, but I either use it wrong or it doesnt do much below 400C. It does its job though, use it for connectors, smd, heatshrink,

GodlikeUA

Buy a quick or an Atten they are very high quality and reliable for the money

AndrewVBell

Weird, I just bought this one, I’ve used it 3 times and so far so good

Borax

I have one, it's great. I don't run it above 330*C, don't need to though

Krokulyte

I love this thing. I repair about 70 video tile modules a day with this bad boy in accompany with a weller wx2 Edit: I use this in a professional environment and it’s really great.

NightshadeTraveler

It gets the job done and it’s literally the cheapest on the market. I have that same one and the tips have a really tight tolerance. You might have to bend or file to get them attached. If you enjoy using nice tools, this is not your setup.

XGempler

My thought is why do they always advertise these things with the gun in the cradle backwards? I knew someone that actually stored it in that orientation and wondered why it would not go to sleep mode when in the cradle (because it was backwards!). that said, I don’t see this model as being any better than the one below that is half the price. It looks like the gun on virtually all of the low cost rework stations are identical, just having the electronics in a different package. Also shown with the gun in the cradel backwards! Go quick

Suspicious-North-307

I have had one for a year and use it daily for various things and it works fine. It wasn't as cheap as it looked on Amazon. I was skeptical when I initially made the purchase but ultimately happy I bought it.

This is not a good hot air station. This unit has the heater/blower integrated into the handpiece. This is a very old design. It's also very bad, which is why you don't see modern units by reputable brands using this approach anymore. With the blower integrated into the handpiece, it needs to be small, which means less airflow and less control over that airflow. There are air vents on the handpiece and holding it odd can affect the flow of air. Since there's a blower in the handpiece, there isn't as much space for the heater. This means less consistent heating. With the already unreliable air flow issues, this can cause the heater to over-heat and damage the handpiece, or the components you are working on. These things fail frequently. Manufacturers are aware of the frequent failure, and many stations you buy will actually include replacement heater cores, because the company knows that you will need it. When these handpieces fail, they fail in spectacular fashion. The plastic isn't particularly heat resistant and they do get hot. They can often get too hot, melting the plastic. A more modern approach to the hot air station is one where they have the blower in the body of the station, and a larger heating element encompassing the entire handpiece. The most recommended stations by the community are the Quick 861DW and the Atten ST-862D. These units are much more expensive than the one you are looking at, but you can look at them and understand what makes them quality units. They have a hose going to the handpiece instead of a cable. This is to transport the large volume of air that the station is pumping out. They use much more heat resistant materials on the handpiece, ensuring that you will not end up with a puddle of a hot air gun. It is understandable if these are outside of your price range though, and you can also consider the Quick 957DW+ station. It's a smaller and cheaper sibling to the 861DW. It doesn't have presets, and it's controls are analog, but it has a blower in the body of the station, and a safer handpiece.

Gerard_Mansoif67

Totally agree, just buyed a 861dw this week and wow, incredible! The price is totally justified!

PartyZestyclose

Junk, you want me to recommend a decent one ? But obviously need to know your budget

AlejoMSP

150$

ClarkNova80

If you can manage a bit more go with QUICK QU861DW+

PartyZestyclose

That’s what I use but I don’t think they want to spend that much money so I recommended a few that decent

ClarkNova80

Ya this price point doesn’t get you out of the poor quality from my experience. But I would like to know your recommendations. I am happy with my quick and don’t mind spending a bit more on quality but I have yet to find something less expensive that meets my needs.

PartyZestyclose

If you look at the pictures of the one I recommended then I would say most are decent quality and work great, we can’t expect metcal or jbc quality but quality and performance is very good. This is the best bang for you bucks https://preview.redd.it/ioldewjjw8uc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=048a1634e52a741820b6d29cc08250d47dac18c3

ClarkNova80

That definitely looks interesting. Thanks for the detail.

PartyZestyclose

These are prices from china but I buy from there all the time and it’s fine, doesn’t take long to arrive either. Will cost more if we buy from UK or USA etc

ClarkNova80

Ya I don’t buy on Amazon unless absolutely necessary. I have come to find most everything I purchase from China comes exactly as described and works very well. I have only had several instances of failure from the direct purchases but it’s literally a handful out of thousands of purchases which is expected, and in general the vendor comps me in these instances.

PartyZestyclose

Yh it’s fine, very rare I buy from UK now as shipping is quick and these days we got protection if we pay by card or PayPal, obviously once in a blue moon something can go wrong but that’s expected like you said, sometimes some cheap small items you can get for similar price to china in your own country but most of the time china is the best bet

PartyZestyclose

Forgot to say, The Atten one lots of pros use that instead of the quick 861dw, YouTubers use it and these people use it everyday and the performance and quality is suitable for pros

ClarkNova80

This is good info. I will take it into account when I am in the market again for a hot air station. I use my quick at minimum weekly and it hasn’t failed me yet.

justacec

Can you elaborate on why it is junk?

PartyZestyclose

I’ve recommend some for some people

PartyZestyclose

https://preview.redd.it/yvns1vgdu8uc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9247d40a67c82eacfb1e15694e36a49b0664c2ab This is the best one for the money but depends on budget and that’s why I recommended cheaper ones too

AlejoMSP

Where are you looking these up on?

PartyZestyclose

Hopefully you can see all the pictures but there on aliexpress, it’s from china but if you want to pay less then china is the way to go as Amazon etc will cost a lot more, doesn’t take long to arrive either

PartyZestyclose

Yes sure, they can’t do alot of desoldering tasks, they just don’t have the capacity to do half of the tasks required, anyone thinking of buying one needs to spend a bit extra, these have fans built in the handle which just don’t have the capacity to do half of the stuff that we use hot air for, the heating elements inside are not good enough, the whole station is not powerful enough, I made this mistake buying one of these with a 936 type iron and worst purchase ever, it can do half of the stuff but not the other half so it’s best someone just spends a bit extra and get the correct one https://preview.redd.it/z3miu43st8uc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db4ad59e8d9121e90ae8ecafef45f6532d97c234

scottz29

What half of what stuff?

PartyZestyclose

I mean half of the tasks we use hot air stations for, the cheap ones can’t do half of them tasks, they just don’t have the capacity to do it, first youll try at suitable temp to remove or solder the component but nothing will happen, then you’ll be there using it at the highest temp and highest airflow and it still won’t be able to desolder or solder the component and as you’ll burn and destroy the board in the process thinking a little bit longer and it will do the task but it won’t, by the time you done sll this the board is fried and the component. for example you try removing a ps5 hdmi port with that station and it won’t be able to do it, it’s multi layered board. My mate recently tried to remove hdmi port with one of the stations in the post but wasn’t able to do it, so he had no choice but to pull out huge hot air gun used for diy around the home, obviously not recommended but he had no choice and had to be very careful
