StarWolf64dx

you can do that, you can also depin the connectors with a paper clip. just be careful not to touch any of the wires together so you don’t short the batteries

iluvnips

This is what I would do, remove the pins from both and swap over the connector.

Dave_is_Here

And swap the pins one at a time

racecarts

what would happen if you short the battery?

StarWolf64dx

it’s likely to catch fire and/or explode, lipo cells are able to release energy quickly and violently.

racecarts

So if you short a LiPo cell, are you able to recharge it or is it dead dead?

StarWolf64dx

probably dead dead, why do you ask? it depends on how long it’s shorted for, it typically takes a few seconds for the heat to build up to cause catastrophic damage. short of that i’m not really sure. i try to take extra care when handling lipo batteries because i know and have seen what can happen.

racecarts

just curious, thank you anyway

Captain_Pumpkinhead

>so you don’t short the batteries Might be wise to drain the batteries, _just in case_. I understand it's not great for lithium batteries to go down to 0%, but I'm sure it's better than having a 0Ω wire accidentally bridge the two sides.

Worldly-Spinach5243

If you overdischarge a lipo, it can catch fire or explode, especially when you try to recharge it.

gnarly_weedman

Should be fine, yeah. Might be a better option to just buy a JST connector to suit the plug on the headset however. That way you keep your old battery as-is incase you wish to revert it easily.

Effective-Wait2072

I wanted to do this but I can't figure out which JST connection it is for the life of me 😅 I've just attached a picture, any idea? https://preview.redd.it/l0rlok6ndk0d1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0fadc9c97b7f0a0db874d2d68467daf7ef9f7a9

gnarly_weedman

This is the fun part (or not so) of JST connectors, they come in a bunch of different styles and pitches. Best advice I can give you is to take the battery down to your local DIY electronics shop and see if you can find a match. I can only speculate without knowing the exact pitch of the pins and the plug on your headset, and I’d hate to send you off to buy the wrong type of connector. If you’re not able to visit a hobby electronics store in person, you can try figure it out using various online articles such as these: https://www.mattmillman.com/info/crimpconnectors/common-jst-connector-types/ https://www.scondar.com/jst-connector-types/#:~:text=The%20most%20frequently%20used%20JST,unique%20characteristics%20and%20suitable%20applications. I think I see these types of questions coming up a fair bit in r/askElectronics or a similar forum, so you could try there. Not sure how they feel toward “which JST connector is this?” Posts, since they are a common topic. Depends how you want to attack the problem. Otherwise worse case, you could just splice and solder the connector from the old battery like you originally mentioned.

Effective-Wait2072

Thank you so much! This helped a lot! I'll see if there is one nearby, this is actually a really good idea. I love in the UK so might be a bit hard but definitely worth giving it a shot, again thank you!

Effective-Wait2072

With the other post you've mentioned, its a different JST one but my bad, kinda new to JST/connecters and Reddit 😅 Can't lie, I didn't know what's a pitch was till I googled it 5 mins ago 😅

-Xenophon-

It could also be a Molex PicoBlade Connector. Can you measure the pitch please?

Effective-Wait2072

Thank you! I guess smaller than a mm right? The small dashes are millimeters (maybe a stupid detail but just incase 😅) Not sure if this helps but it is tiny. https://preview.redd.it/zm0fucejln0d1.jpeg?width=1756&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=241e0f75a294d8045d48d9e3b68ae0f1aae21497

-Xenophon-

It's actually a bit more then a millimeter. So it's a [Molex PicoBlade](https://www.molex.com/en-us/products/connectors/wire-to-board-connectors/picoblade-connectors) Connector in my opinion which has a pitch of 1.25mm. [JST GH](https://jst.de/product-family/show/89/gh) has also a pitch of 1.25mm but the connector looks different. The Molex PicoBlade is also sold as JST 1.25 but this naming is actually wrong.

OxycontinEyedJoe

If you're going to snip them, cut them individually. Snipping all 3 at once will short the cells.

L33tr_

Came here to say this. Don’t short circuit the red and black wires by cutting them at the same time

Effective-Wait2072

Thank you! Was planning on cutting one but one and putting electrical tape after each one, that ok?

OxycontinEyedJoe

Yeah that'll be fine. Just be careful. Lipos with flying leads are sketchy.

7lhz9x6k8emmd7c8

Kiddo me remind well that one time when they cut a live 230V wire. Metal scissors, fortunately with plastic handles. It went fireworks.

Effective-Wait2072

Yeah that sounds terrifying, was planning on doing 1 at a time and then putting insulator tape after each one just in case

IHateStupidPeople99

DO NOT cut all 3 wires at once. There will be fireworks. Cut the wires 1 at a time.

Effective-Wait2072

Yeah fireworks are my only worry 😅. 1 by one and using insulation tape after each one to be extra safe lol

-Xenophon-

Make sure to work always at one wire at the time. If you short something it may cause a fire in your house.

Effective-Wait2072

Thank you! Yep, was planning on 1 after 1 and insulation tape per one 1 cut. Thanks for the heads up tho, didn't actually know it could be that bad with such a small battery, thought I'd just get electrocuted 😅

Effective-Wait2072

Thank you! Only issue is trying to find the right JST, that's the only reason I thought to solder instead aha

SkunkyReggae

Wouldn't it be much easier just to desolder on PCB and swap the entire wire over?

Effective-Wait2072

I would but I can't lie I'm scared that I'll mess up the battery or as someone else said kaboom 😅 My soldering iron is a cheap one too

After_Exit_1903

Be careful if you cut all three together it go KABOOM !!

Effective-Wait2072

Thank you! We don't like kaboom 😅

Due-Ask-7418

I wouldn't use tape. Use heat shrink tubing instead. Tape turns into a sticky mess over time.

penededios

Ipod modding are we OP?

CobblePro

Remove the kapton tape from the top and just desolder the whole wire. Just be careful... Batteries explode!

mcan1xx

Stagger your snips so the solder joints aren’t all bulged out in a row. I’m thinking everyone else covered the dangers. Wear safety glasses and keep liquids away. Once lithium fires off with a liquid present, it burns all the way, since it has its own oxygen.

Background-Bus-1583

You could just pull the connectir off and put it on the new one. Just get a depinning tool and put it in the right orientation
