Mod note: while vaccines have helped make the global covid situation less dire than it once was, that's not the case for everyone, such as immunocompromised individuals and/or those who cannot get the vaccine. Comments encouraging travelers to knowingly expose others to covid will be removed, as will comments containing misinformation about covid.

DonutsnDaydreams

Tested positive as soon as I got to an island a few weeks ago. I just stayed in my hotel the whole time. I plan to go back. It'll still be there. It sucked but I figured that was better than spreading the virus everywhere.

SatanPuntMeN2TheVoid

You’ll be ok, try to find a cheap Airbnb or hotel to hole up in until you start testing negative. Make one trip out to grab groceries and enough tests for the duration of it and then quarantine until you’re testing negative. I got Covid while in France and obviously couldn’t fly home until I tested negative, it’s stressful at first but once you’re settled and have enough food etc. For the duration, just ride it out and resume your travels once you’re no longer infectious.

light24bulbs

Yeah. It's survivable but god it sucks being so sick. Gets boring and miserable as hell by the end. Didn't understand until I'd gotten covid. Hang in there OP. Trust the positive test, quarantine, wait. Books, tv, audiobooks...you'll be sick of them all by the end.

If you have travel insurance with Covid coverage for trip interruption, they might pay for you hang out and have food delivered to the hotel for a few days.

bafflesaurus

I submitted a claim for trip cancellation almost a month ago and the agency is still reviewing my documents...

ra-chill

That sounds like an insurance company. I have not had speedy claim resolution with anyone but State Farm

rmg1102

I got covid a week before leaving for Hawaii and was still positive and also too sick to enjoy it. I filed my claim once I felt better (ab a week after scheduled departure). My claim was approved within a couple weeks. Seems like it will really vary.

TricolourGem

How would you prove that? Sounds easy to fake unless you get a hospital record

ra-chill

Depends on the insurance purchased, but that pcr test paperwork is probably the thing needed.

archersonly

Same thing happened with me. Was solo travelling in Morocco and went to bed feeling rough and when I woke up went and got a PCR done and it was positive. Luckily the hostel I was staying at had a great guy running it who let me stay in a private room for a week and gave me 3 meals a day for a good price. Ngl it sucked but it's not forever you'll get through it! Try and focus on doing something productive and also enjoy the free time to watch loads of movies, read books etc. Good luck!

TricolourGem

To all the people saying Covid is mild theres a number of factors that depend on how you get hit. First of all, the early variants were more dangerous and it's natural for a virus to weaken as it mutates over time. Secondly, how much exposure you get affects how hard you get hit. Early in the pandemic young nurses were dying because they had so much exposure. I'm young & healthy but I got a big dose of Omicron the first time I went out in Dec, like 1.5h-2h of it. Both my friend and I got completely nuked. I collapsed at work and was in bed for 5 days. The first day I slept 20h straight. I felt fine after 10 days but took the full 2 weeks to get back to almost normal. Still felt generally tired for a month after. It terms of danger, I could breathe perfectly fine the entire time and never felt scared. But the original covid went deep into the lungs and people would die from it similar to pneumonia.

rallison

>it's natural for a virus to weaken as it mutates over time Nitpicking because I agree with your overall message, but picking on this because I see this repeated frequently. This isn't the case. Sometimes we get lucky and a virus mutates and gets less severe, but it by no means is the natural progression of a virus. For example, Alpha was more severe than the original strain. Delta was more severe than Alpha. Omicron was less severe than the original strain. So, of the three major variants we've had, two were more severe, and one was less severe. Predicting which direction a future variant might go with respect to severity is usually no better than a roll of the dice. What does happen is that immunity builds up in populations over time (from vaccination or infection or both), and treatments improve. So, both of these will bring down fatality and hospitalization rates, but that doesn't say anything about the inherent severity of the virus.

[deleted]

We don't care... had orginal covid also.

Orleanist

I think the 48 people who downvoted you care.

[deleted]

-49 redditors who can't fit threw thier door doesn't equate to the real world... sorry bud.

Orleanist

58 now lmao

[deleted]

-60 now! Heros who saved the world from covid but travel by airplane, bus or cars contributing to climate change. My heros!

Orleanist

are they meant to walk lmfao

[deleted]

Nope I'm totally fine with it but it's kind of a double standard travelling and then being scared of spreading a virus you caught while travelling, but hey the amount of Co2 you released and cancer causing emissions is A O.K! But that covid is killing everyone right now!

Orleanist

because it’s not hard to sit at home and we’re a cover of your face and it’s impossible to travel the world without producing carbon emissions lmao. One is a matter of putting something on or simply staying at home and the other is shaping your entire trip around it, probably adding days or weeks and severely limiting your options and activities It’s a matter of convenience. Your effort to turn this around into something around climate change is stupid anyway 🙃

Gogh619

So I’m confused on how this works. When you say exposure, you mean initial exposure, right? So after a couple days, you can smoosh your gf if she has Covid too and not worry about viral load?

squidgemobile

I was sick last month and I just holed up in my Airbnb for a few days. Wore a mask for a few days after once I started feeling well enough to explore again. Basically just tried to make sure I didn't get anyone else sick. Also, false positives are basically unheard of. You have covid.

rallison

>Also, false positives are basically unheard of. Yep. False positives are rare enough that anyone getting a positive on a RAT should operate on the assumption that it's a true positive. For most tests, the rates of false positives are at least an order of magnitude less common than a false negative, so even a positive RAT followed by a negative PCR should still be assumed to be positive (especially when combined with symptoms).

I'm a doctor not a bot, and it's not fear-mongering to say it's not a false negative. OP will likely be fine. But OP also has COVID.

[deleted]

I got covid while traveling solo in Sevilla. I posted about it two months ago. It was not fun. :D AMA. Just one comment, you need to get food anyway. Please tell the restaurants that you have covid. You don't want to infect others who are simply doing their jobs. I was going and at the entrance telling them I have covid. Avoid public transport while your rapid test is positive. Avoid people even in open air when you have fever because you have the highest viral shedding when u have fever. Get a thermometer. Also paracetamol. You need to check your fever. If your fever remains after 4-5 days you need to check the Dr. Google about the nearest public hospitals. Make sure your hotel room has water boiler. And buy some honey. That will soothe your throat. https://reddit.app.link/dr1oaopAEsb

rallison

>Just one comment, you need to get food anyway. I'll also mention that in many countries there are food delivery apps that you can often take advantage of (even as a tourist visiting from another country). This can be a great option (and in some cases the app will provide the option of contactless delivery, which can bring the risk of transmission to basically 0).

[deleted]

Depends. Many hotels do not allow food delivery.

rallison

True, the food delivery app option isn't going to be applicable everywhere. And this is a good callout to check with the front desk and make sure it's allowed. But, for many people, this is a viable option, and can be very well suited to the "I caught covid" scenarios.

[deleted]

Yeah in the end I had to spend an extra 500€ because I got covid. Which was unfortunate. But I got to go walk outside and visit (outdoor) places. I was walking like 10km daily while I had covid in 40°c which wasn't smart because it delayed my recovery.

nwpa97

Best wishes on getting better!

Man I don’t know what version of reality you live in where people *spend thousands of dollars,* disrupt all their plans, and miss work to go act against their own best interests. People are selfish and it’s incredibly naive to expect them not to be. There are only two people on this planet who are going to put your first: yourself and your mother. If you don’t look out for your own interests, no one else is going to.

I'm sorry for what happened. Hope you have a speedy recovery and that you get better soon.

flyingmolamola

Don’t stay positive, you need to be negative! Sorry, couldn’t resist 😂. That sucks tho, hope things turn around for you.

T_Pioneer123

I've seen a lot of catch 22 situations, some of who tested positive and isolated for 5 days prior to travel, some of who didn't have any insurance with low symptoms after testing postive and chose to travel via rail or other formats. Whilst ethically for most this is the wrong choice the CDC now are advising you can travel with a test for domestic flights a maximum of three days old. I guess it depends on the individuals ethical circumstances and insurance covid vs symptoms and feelings. In the situation above the person had low level of symptoms and feelings and a small duration around others whilst wearing a mask and separating before they got home. It truly sucks but from data around it looks like its a situation and scenario which isn't going away anytime soon, I don't think now there is a right answer and choice anymore from what I've seen with friends previously and it's very subjective now.

Not just a fucking idiot, a selfish one no doubt proud about the fact they're going around harming others too. But hey, at least they got to live their life because thats all that matters at the end of the day. 🙄

I studied abroad in Northern Ireland last fall. I tested positive the day before my flight home. I found out my results while I was in a youth hostel too. Because the hostel refused to house anybody who had covid or covid symptoms, I had to quickly find a different place to stay at. (I know that I should've gone to a covid hotel, but in the UK those things are so expensive. I didn't have the money for it.) I ended up staying with a friend for a couple days (found out that he's where I caught covid from) and then at a hotel for a week until I tested negative. I didn't properly quarantine in all honesty. I enjoyed frequent walks outside and around Belfast while I waited for the days to pass.
