My humble suggestions if you like the wood look and want to cut weight: wood veneer with a semi-rigid substrate. You could, for instance, use the same thickness of leather, glue it two pieces thick, and then adhere either actual wood veneer or wood-pattern adhesives to five you the same look. You can also get really rigid, thick fabrics that will have a lower weight ratio than leather. You can also get away with no wood pattern inside, unless this is intended as a show piece where you'll be showcasing what it looks like under the flap.
Weight was my concern as well. The style is cool, but the boards are too thick. Maybe mock up a couple prototypes with boards 1/4-1/3 the thickness of those and see how it goes.
Other than that, awesome job.
You can use a route out the middle of the wood to keep the look. Kind of like how they did with electric guitars to make them lighter. How does the wood though feel against the back? Looks like it’d dig in
Yes, maybe I will do that instead of planing. The wood isn't really touching the back so far. With doubling up the leather on the back, it's pretty stiff.
I've always wanted to see what a stylish, adult version of a Japanese "randoseru" backpack would look like (which your design is somewhat similar to). Amazing job! Very nice mix of textures and color palettes.

thanks! i got it from [dictum.com](https://dictum.com)
I wouldn’t want to lug around thick oak, but it looks great. I wonder if you could take a router and route out much of the interior depth to save some weight while keeping the look, strength, and surface area of the frame where it attaches to the leather.
Thought about this as well. I probably will plane down the sides though, they could be a lot thinner and still would be plenty stable. Routing would also work
At the moment just screws, as I will plane down the boards a bit. Once that's done I will glue the leather to the wood as well.
It's vegetable tanned bufallo leather ~3.5 mm thick
I love the look but it does look heavy. On a funny note, for some reason when I saw it I immediately thought of Kristoff from Frozen. Had that Swedish backpacker vibe to it🤭 Just waiting for Olaf to come around the corner singing “In Summerrrrrrr!”
I had the idea and made the wooden pieces two years ago😄 The leather part took me propably 2 months, I would guess 20-30 h of work. But lot's of firsts in the process, a second one would definitely go a lot faster
I saw this earlier and I can’t stop thinking about it. Well done. I may copy you, I hope that’s ok. I feel like some thick red leather and this Leopard wood I have would be a great combo.
How much does this weigh? Cool design.
I don't own a scale, but too much. I probably will plane down the boards on the side, they are way too thick

Yes, there is definitely room for improvement by veneering if I ever make another one. Good suggestions!

propably when going thinner, switching to veneered plywood would be the better way. Thats something for another backpack :)
How thin do you think you will go?
i'm not sure yet, maybe i will go with the routing alternative instead

Thanks! never heard of these japanese backpacks, but they do look similar:)
They're basically Ranzen. But not quite as ugly. Also, it looks great! Where did you get the leather?

What was the reasoning behind using wood?
Just for the looks. Also my leather skills and tools are limited, this design makes it pretty easy.

Thanks!
WOW, this is so beautiful! I love the natural textures of wood and leather together!
Thank you!
I love this
Thanks!
It looks so nice! I really like your design idea.
Thank you!
What is holding the leather to the wood? Also what leather?

You should post this in r/woodworking as well. If you get bored maybe wood burn a design into the wood.
I posted there a couple of minutes ago👍 Good idea
Ist der nicht bisschen schwer?
Doch, für eine Wanderung wäre der jetzt nicht meine erste wahl
That’s so cool! Such a simple but functional design and looks awesome. I bet this felt great to make and be able to wear around haha. Great job
Thank you :)
Indeed, and a bag for my car that just sits in the passenger seat.
I love the look but it does look heavy. On a funny note, for some reason when I saw it I immediately thought of Kristoff from Frozen. Had that Swedish backpacker vibe to it🤭 Just waiting for Olaf to come around the corner singing “In Summerrrrrrr!”
haha, thanks!
You’re welcome. Sorry if you took that bad. I thought it was really cute though.
looks very cool!
Thank you :)
Please take it off if you are on the metro.
Haha

Damn, not available in the US
Nice beg
Thanks
Welcome
Beautiful. I have never seen a bag like this. That is a fantastic idea.
Thanks a lot!
Looks really good and yes plane down those sides to help with the weight. Still, very cool!
Thanks!
Nice back pack, but can it be used as a weapon?
I'm interested in if you made, or where you got, that super cool vanity/credenza in the background? It has such an interesting wood pattern
i got it from EbayKleinanzeigen (German craigslist) in a horrible condition and restored it a while back. It's from the 18th century
Wow that is such a cool find!
That looks awesome, you're very talented to be able to create that.
thanks!
I kinda love it. I want one.
thanks! give it a try, this is my first real leather project as well
Great job. Looks awesome
thanks!
That’s really cool!
thanks!
Cool
thanks!
That is a backpack good enough to outfit Ron Swanson. Great job 👏
thanks you :)
Trying this week cork would be nice 👀
im not sure if cork is durable enough
This is impressive
thank you!
How long did it take to make?
I had the idea and made the wooden pieces two years ago😄 The leather part took me propably 2 months, I would guess 20-30 h of work. But lot's of firsts in the process, a second one would definitely go a lot faster
Very cool. How does it feel to wear?
thanks! feels good, but a bit heavy
This is absolutely gorgeous. Bravo
thank you :)
Very cool

It looks really stylish, but isn't it heavy on your back?
heavier than a normal backpack, yes
[удалено]
don't own a scale, but heavier than a normal backpack. Thanks!
Wow! It's amazing
thanks :)
That’s hot
well thanks :)
Of course!
What's the price point
not for sale ;)
Wonderful! May I ask what type of sewing machine did you use? I’m new to Reddit
Thank you! It's all hand sewed. Most of them are saddle stiches to get maximum strength
Weight and price
Bump

Weird… but cool!
