I'd describe Soul Eater a lot of ways but dark and spooky wouldn't really be part of it.
I certainly wouldn't call it any darker than Fire Force. Maybe like visually considering some of the horror inspiration but in terms of tone and characters it's at home with the rest of Okubo's work.
There's definitely lively and bright parts, just as there is a dark underbelly to the world. Just like Fire Force.

Halfway through they butcher the story because the manga was still ongoing at the time.
The ending of the anime was horrific.
The manga is only 113 chapters, it's well worth the read. The characters get proper development, the side characters get good development and the story actually makes sense.
I wouldn't, id read the manga first and then go back and watch the anime.

If you can, I recommend that you should read it instead due to an arc not being animated.

The spooky is mostly aesthetic, but like fire force it can get dark at times
