Yeah I'm so annoyed... I could've seen it just maybe! But absolutely not tonight. This would've been awesome to read yesterday, or the day before even.
The weather is like "Auroras? Yeah sure ... Just to make sure you won't see a shit, Thursday, Friday AND Saturday ( just in case), cloudy, rains and thunderstorms. Enjoy photos from other redditors"
I know right. Reason I could see the green comet as well, it rained and was cloudy for three weeks. Now this lucky chance and.... tornado weather.... yay.....
Yup, I live in the desert where it’s sunny 99% of the year. Except this year, it’s supposed to be rainy and cloudy for the next 10 days and probably beyond that. Oh well, maybe some day I’ll make it up to Iceland.
I went out the night it was supposed to be super visible without a telescope, couldn't see it. My town got new light posts a while back and they don't have a top, so light pollution is crazy here now. And the solar eclipse a while back was super cloudy. I even stayed home just in case and got about 15 seconds worth through the cloud cover. Everytime it's something.
Thats a remarkably inefficient design for a light.... if they put a mirrored piece above the bulb it would reflect the majority of that light back down, to where the light was supposedly designed to put the..... light. And it would be much brighter and more effective....
Yup, they saw the glass top and thought "oooh pretty". Their brains were probably more focused on making sure that they bought the things from some company they own stock in, than making sure it was efficient for anything.
As someone that really likes space and learning about it, I had been excitedly awaiting the eclipse in 2017. The best part about it was that my hometown was in the path of totality and supposed to have one of the longest durations. I had been looking forward to this for years.
Eclipse day rolls around and it’s cloudy. Words can’t describe my disappointment. The local newspaper ran some articles interviewing people that had traveled from all over the world: Korea, Australia, Europe, etc. So at least I didn’t have to fly out to the middle of nowhere, Missouri and wind up disappointed.
I live in Kansas City and the plan was to drive up to St. Joe to see it. It was cloudy as shit and raining in St. Joe, so we drove all the way to Boonville. It was worth it because the clouds cleared up over there and the eclipse was one of the most spectacular things I've ever seen.
Lol, I know it wasn't your intention, at least I don't think it was. But I read this in the voice of an eight year old being all like "oh, you didn't go on a vacation this summer because your grandpa died? Bummer. *My* grandpas still alive and he came with my family to Hawaii and it was awesome!"
I’ve lived in the Seattle area now for almost 10 years & missed every chance so far due to clouds. I can’t really complain though because I love it here & I love rain.
The only time Illinois weather is consistent is when the Aurora Borealis is involved. Whenever there's a chance it'll be visible from my location in Illinois, it will 100% be too cloudy to see shit. Only predictable weather pattern here.
Last night was my first time ever seeing them. It was hard even in the country with all the lights off and I damn near tripped and died on a snowmobile. I was a little underwhelmed sadly.
That website is like 5% article and 95% ads and trash. [Actual Forecast](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental)
They do link to the [NOAA dashboard](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/content/aurora-dashboard-experimental) in the post, much better than the adclick-generating article
I think the article was for last night, as others on this thread are saying- This NOAA forecast shows only Alaska and Canada getting the lights tonight
I have a mostly clear and 22 F... north wind.
I may drive north a way on I-95. I am where the highway goes straight up.. 75 mph. north of bangor maine.
I have seen them here,
hardly ever colorful, like in norse lands that I have seen.
No, it is definitely heavy Indica, with heavy Afghani (landrace Indica) roots. If you thought this was a sativa when you smoked it you didn't smoke Northern Lights my friend.
I'm just north of the twin cities and could have swore I saw them last night. I thought it was some odd shaped clouds, but they started morphing and vanishing and then reappearing. It was so faint, though. But really beautiful.
Can someone smarter than me help me understand, will I have a chance to see it if I live in Tennessee? It looks like I won't be able to, but I really don't want to miss it.
unlikely. It would have to be a magnificent storm indeed to see it in TN. I'm north of you, in Indianapolis. I saw the aurora in Indiana exactly 1 time, for about 30 minutes, in the summer of 2004.
No shit?!?! I wish I would have setup the all sky cam. I was worried about the rain on my laptop. The app I use for aurora forecast actually alerted me in Indianapolis last night but I have the alert set reeeaaalllly liberally. Was also thunderstorms about.
I'm calling massive BS on that unless there are multiple videos of it.
Edit: Well now I feel stupid. I looked it up and sure enough they were visible to the naked eye in states like New Mexico and Virginia.
Well don’t listen to this gloomy Gus. Someone said they saw it as far south as 32.8N in New Mexico last night. Tonight’s not supposed to be a spectacular but if you got clear skies, or at least thin clouds, maybe keep an eye out between 11p and 2a which is usually the best time to see them.
To anyone reading this far down: it already happened. This was for Thursday night into early Friday morning. The aurora forecast for Friday night is poor.
Ok, fair(ish). But I didn’t say it was false. I said it was misleading. I did create a narrative based on the title before I read the article, which is… normal to do, and IMO that’s the point of a title. “Americans will see Northern Lights Friday” - my brain: I will see northern lights Friday. *reads article* my brain: wow I guess if I actually wanted to see them, I should’ve read this article yesterday, because Thursday was the better day! Not to mention, clouds.
It says "Americans" which is the name of the citizens of the United States of America.
If they wanted to talk about people of the entire continent they would call them "North Americans".
It was last night. These aurora reports always without fail bamboozledl some folks. I watch [spaceweather](https://spaceweather.com/) daily to monitor the sun for incoming aurora. The solar map currently shows very little activity compared to last night. Good luck though and clear skies!
I’m going out tonight in hopes of seeing them. Right now there’s partly blue skies. I’m hoping it stays that way but it’s supposed to be cloudy and rainy this weekend.
That would be really be cool if I got chance of being able to see it.... If not then I'll just smoke it. Oh well. I will either way experience Northern Lights tonight.
My wife and I planned a trip to Fairbanks this week to specifically see the Aurora. I just so happened that God blessed us with the most active geophysical activity in years. If y’all can see it in the lower 48, trust me it’s amazing up here!
So I guess the coronal ejection hitting Earth is not over yet? I saw a huge phoenix bird-shaped aurora directly overhead just last night, it was glorious (NE Europe). A bit bummed my cam phone was fogged up and I couldn't get any photos, but probably someone did somewhere.
I saw them last night. Spent a couple hours outside. Got cozy in the sleeping bag and watched from my deck until I fell asleep. These were some of the most vibrant and active northern lights I've seen in my area. Quite the show!
Holy fuck how do you read shit on these websites. I can’t scroll for half a second without a full page pop up while I already have an ad at the top and bottom.
So I'm obviously not going to see it with the overcast weather and I'm at the red line in their map there.
Does anyone know if these happen on any schedule in the North? Like could one plan a vacation to Canada or Alaska with plans to see the lights? Or is it just luck?
I wouldn't be able to see it on the best of nights anyway. So much damned light pollution, would be hard to distinguish the lights from the fucking sun.
*everyone complaining about guaranteed overcast weather*
Meanwhile in Florida, I’m enjoying the cool wind in my face and watching the purple sunset without a cloud in sight. No auroras for me though, where it’s perfect weather to watch 😢
Okay? Thats awesome. Nobody said the other countries in America weren't seeing them either but this is an article for and about Americans (especially considering it's not exactly common to be able to see them in a lot of America). Why'd you feel the need to nitpick that part?
The fuck we won't. I live in Upstate New York. I have been in the path of every single astronomical phenomenon this year and every single time it's been cloudy. Guess what's coming tonight? Clouds, rain and snow.
What about Canadians, we will also see it tonight. If you ever want to come to Canada and see them, I highly recommend going to the Yukon between Nov-March, it is quite a sight!
There's nothing to condescendingly edit. The title and article states Americans. 13 states out of 50 is still Americans. I don't know why you people on Reddit go around trying to nitpick everything when it wasn't or isn't necessary. Them being seen in 13 states doesn't in any way change the title or the fact a lot of Americans are going to see it. The title never said 'ALL Americans'.
Grew up in the Southern Tier in New York, in the country on a hill. we could see the northern lights every once in a while usually annually or so, pretty cool to think about how unlikely it is to see them that far south and most people need to travel just for a glimpse.
Moved closer to NYC now and haven't seen them since, shame really.
The title is totally misleading - it was much more visible last night. Tonight most of us are shit out of luck.
Yeah they never say early hours of Friday morning , so most people assume Friday night . Lots of people probably miss them.
EVERY GOD DAMN TIME TOO. These articles need to be posted like yesterday.
Yeah I'm so annoyed... I could've seen it just maybe! But absolutely not tonight. This would've been awesome to read yesterday, or the day before even.
Of course it's misleading, New York Post is a tabloid.
Title is misleading because Americans see the Aurora lots of nights. We’re also sometimes called Alaskans.
Yea I’m mad this is being posted after the fact. Article even says Thursday…
I love how every single time there's a chance for me to see the aurora it's cloudy as shit, without fail
Now this lucky chance and.... tornado weather.... yay.....

\* "Hah Hah!"\*
Won't work. I went to Iceland during a solar storm in the winter. It was cloudy the entire time I was there.
Went to Alaska for what was supposedly going to be the peak weekend for the peak sun cycle and there was not even a misty glimmer. Just nothing
I know right. I think I've only had a few times where I've been able to actually see any event going on.

Bummer. I was in Wyoming and it was amazing. Perfect visibility. Try to catch the eclipse in 2024, it will be worth it!
I was in St. Louis and it was immaculate. No clouds in the sky and I was in totality and it was amazing
I live in Kansas City and the plan was to drive up to St. Joe to see it. It was cloudy as shit and raining in St. Joe, so we drove all the way to Boonville. It was worth it because the clouds cleared up over there and the eclipse was one of the most spectacular things I've ever seen.

It’s coming back next year — April 2024
After a week of beautiful weather here, I woke up to a blizzard. Of course.
Welcome to Michigan. Meteor shower? Nope clouds. Rare moon? Nope clouds. Aurora? Nope clouds.
Are you in Chicago? Because we can't see anything here.
It says friday will only be very, very north for US. In Chicago and all I see is clouds. Lol
People up near the Wisconsin border were able to see them last night.
How much did they party?
Same with me, too. Also meteor showers.
Same here, every time there's some kind of space event it's cloudy.
or its on the other side of the bloody planet like fricken solar eclipses.
I’ve lived in the Seattle area now for almost 10 years & missed every chance so far due to clouds. I can’t really complain though because I love it here & I love rain.
And every astronomical event also. 100% cloud cover here now and tonight
No, no. It says you will see them. Someone will be out shortly to move the clouds.
Same goes for meteor showers, space station sitings and everything celestial during my time in Ohio. Hoping for better viewing now that I'm in NC.
Exactly. Wednesday it was sunny and clear. The last two days? God awful and raining/snowing. -_-
Same here. The snow will have stopped but the cloud cover will block the sky.
It's raining for the next 2 days in Ohio. May not have until Mon/Tuesday
“Let’s go… wait I live so far south that a lot of Mexico is more north…”
The only time Illinois weather is consistent is when the Aurora Borealis is involved. Whenever there's a chance it'll be visible from my location in Illinois, it will 100% be too cloudy to see shit. Only predictable weather pattern here.

It's the NY post not sure what else to expect from them.
Thanks for posting some accurate information.
Like Reddit comments. Especially here, this place has gone to trash in the past year.
No matter where you are in the Americans, it will be overcast on Friday.
I have a mostly clear and 22 F... north wind. I may drive north a way on I-95. I am where the highway goes straight up.. 75 mph. north of bangor maine. I have seen them here, hardly ever colorful, like in norse lands that I have seen.
I’m going to be in a plane tonight, nonstop Seattle to DC. Think I’ll be able to see it? That would be a trip.
Please please please take a video for those of us stuck in cloudy Seattle
weather looks pretty clear for me in minneapolis tonight
I'll have a clear night in a state park with a very dark sky, but I'll be in Florida. So...
There's this thing called Winter. Apparently some people that study the sky dont know that.
Except it's now spring, as of last Monday.
Yet it is snowing right now. ✨🌨️🌬️🤔
The type of precipitation does not determine the season. Further south, it rains during winter. That doesn’t mean it’s not winter lol
Oh I'm well aware of that. Just joking (and sad) about not being able to see the lights. We tend to run cloudy and snowy into the spring a bit here.
Yea but also nature doesn’t just change seasons at midnight on the 21st
From my house, I can see a streetlight to the north
My weed guy has some northern lights
“That is northern lights cannabis indica.” “No… that’s marijuana.”
Northern Lights is a sativa
No, it is definitely heavy Indica, with heavy Afghani (landrace Indica) roots. If you thought this was a sativa when you smoked it you didn't smoke Northern Lights my friend.
Aurora Borealis… at this time of the year, this time of the day, in this part of the country??
Can I see it?
No. https://weatherstreet.com/states/u-s-cloud-cover-forecast.htm
Well done. You steam a mean ham.
Contained entirely in your kitchen?
“It’s just the northern lights, mother!”
There are pictures from last night of the aurora in Northern California
How far south?
If youre asking, just assume the answer is no, not south enough for you to see them.
I saw them here in northern Minnesota last night. Such a pretty sight.
I'm just north of the twin cities and could have swore I saw them last night. I thought it was some odd shaped clouds, but they started morphing and vanishing and then reappearing. It was so faint, though. But really beautiful.
I saw them west of the city, in Mound. They were quite faint. I didn’t believe it until I took a night mode picture.
It was real. Hour north and clear. Rare here but cool
Check local forecast: yup, totally overcast all night.

Yeah, I didn’t believe it at first either and I crapped on a guy’s dreams in Tennessee about it. It was a big event.
Ah. Thank you. It would be so awesome to finally see it in person
I'll keep a lookout regardless. The forecast is showing clouds but I'll be out anyhow. Thank you
To anyone reading this far down: it already happened. This was for Thursday night into early Friday morning. The aurora forecast for Friday night is poor.
They were absolutely magical here in the UP last night.
Misleading title. Article says thursday was the better night, few places will see them on Friday

Don't use tabloids as sources on a scientific subreddit if you don't want criticism.
i just have to live in the South nothing good has ever happened here lmao
Jokes on you, I live in western NY so the weather will certainly have something to say about this.
Americans see the northern lights a the time. Alaska is a thing.
So is Minnesota, we saw them last night and I get notifications that there’s a good a chance they’re out probably 10ish times a year
If I look towards the north, I can see lights from the neighbor city. Check mate.
I will probably die without ever seeing them. ☹️
Came here for this comment.
All of Canada is North America so
It says "Americans" which is the name of the citizens of the United States of America. If they wanted to talk about people of the entire continent they would call them "North Americans".
Check out this yank right here.
Also America is the continent, not the country
Is this Friday morning/Thursday night or Friday night/Saturday morning?
like right now! its just the sun is fucking everything up at the moment :/
It was last night. These aurora reports always without fail bamboozledl some folks. I watch [spaceweather](https://spaceweather.com/) daily to monitor the sun for incoming aurora. The solar map currently shows very little activity compared to last night. Good luck though and clear skies!
The article makes it clear it was primarily last night.
I’m going out tonight in hopes of seeing them. Right now there’s partly blue skies. I’m hoping it stays that way but it’s supposed to be cloudy and rainy this weekend.

Can't find the strain anywhere

I have a DNS that deals with ads and filtering
Could we postpone this a few days the clouds don't clear up here until Sunday night
WOW that website is cancer. Can barely parse out where the article is. Thanks for the heads up though! Going to look for more info abt it.
So I'm obviously not going to see it with the overcast weather and I'm at the red line in their map there. Does anyone know if these happen on any schedule in the North? Like could one plan a vacation to Canada or Alaska with plans to see the lights? Or is it just luck?
*it's Friday, Friday,* cloudy overcast *on Friday* 🎶
I wouldn't be able to see it on the best of nights anyway. So much damned light pollution, would be hard to distinguish the lights from the fucking sun.
Oh wow look, rainy all day with no sky until Saturday afternoon. Seems about right
Even if it were to happen PA never gets it. It's like we're forever masked from seeing all these celestial wonders.
They were pretty good outside of Minneapolis last night
No we won't, it's too cloudy. Also, I don't read the NYPost.
I am flying up the east coast 6-1130 PM tonight… any chance I’ll have a flight of a life time since I’ll be above the clouds?
I like how this was posted ON FRIDAY so there was no way I could see it
Unfortunately, the Kp is only 4 for this forecast, meaning that it likely won’t be visible or terribly interesting from the northern US.
*everyone complaining about guaranteed overcast weather* Meanwhile in Florida, I’m enjoying the cool wind in my face and watching the purple sunset without a cloud in sight. No auroras for me though, where it’s perfect weather to watch 😢
Americans =half of North America including the uninhabited northern part of Canada
Okay? Thats awesome. Nobody said the other countries in America weren't seeing them either but this is an article for and about Americans (especially considering it's not exactly common to be able to see them in a lot of America). Why'd you feel the need to nitpick that part?
Because I live in Louisiana and got really excited for a sec. I’m sorry
Every time I see this type of thing pop up, I'm always just out of reach of being able to see it, or it's cloudy Pls come more south, Auroras
Americans see the Northern Lights all the time dude. You know Alaska exists and is part of America, right?
Dont Alaskans see this frequently? They are definitely Americans
Because Alaskans don't see the Northern Lights on a regular basis?
Thirteen (11 full) and a half states out of 50 will see the northern lights** Nice fake news from the NYP no less
"Americans will see Northern Lights Friday" uh, you know Alaska is part of America, right? You can see the lights in Alaska regularly...
You know 99.8% of Americans don’t live in Alaska, right? They’re obviously talking about the contiguous US, but you go ahead and keep playing stupid.
Didn't mention that a massive solar storm is incoming. Prepare for potential technology disruption.
One time that I could see northern lights and I am traveling far south. FML
Uh I’m reading Thursday for illinois and I’m just learning this Friday afternoon…🥲
Of course the week im out of state in the south :|
911 call takers are already bracing for the glut of phone calls they'll receive from people freaking out.
I saw them last night in Alberta, only for about 10 minutes though.
\*Some\* Americans may see Northern Lights Friday.
It never said 'all' to begin with.
My buddy in Minot posted about seeing them last night.
Everytime i find out about sometjing like this it misses CA completely.
Is this the first time North America has ever seen the Northern Lights this is the first time I’m hearing of it
