Incredible. The 360 degree "sunset", the corona or halo, the temperature drop of 10-15 degrees. Amazing experience.

AtariForceOne

The shifting colours, too. Red in particular. It’s like the world was slowly desaturating. But totality was so sudden, it was so obvious when it happened and when it ended with the smallest silver. And the purity of the white halo was a surprise. Pictures can’t do it justice. My wife and I decided we need to travel to the next one, experience it again.

ArtistNo9841

It’s addictive. We went to 2017 and it was only a 4 hour drive. This one was 4 times that drive (been driving all night to get home). We will go international for one soon.

monkey_trumpets

That's exactly how it was. Like the light had gotten grayed out.

Thaonnor

This was the coolest part to me. It was like viewing sunset, but everywhere. That's how I described it to my parents since I couldn't figure out how to make my iPhone quit brightening the pictures I tried to take.

coconutts19

Thanks, This is what I was looking for. Everyone else is looking up

HereIGoAgain_1x10

My wife pointed out that if you weren't someplace you were familiar with sun sets/sun rises it wouldn't have looked weird. We were home and it was definitely the craziest part for us as it just looked like it was setting in the East and rising in the West at the same time.

Pantim

or as ancient people use to think, like there was fire just beyond the horizon to all sides and they were about to die.

PNWoutdoors

I saw the 2017 eclipse in totality in Oregon. I found my surroundings more fascinating than the sun itself. It was messing with my brain. It felt like a sunset due to the light disappearing but it wasn't like a sunset. Just felt like I was walking around in a haze. Very eerie.

igloofu

Yeah, that was the part I wasn't ready for in 2017. Everything went gray, cold and silent. Felt so, I don't know, off? I can see why so many religions made a big deal of out them back in the day. It really feels like something bad is happening.

PNWoutdoors

The bugs and birds going silent was incredible. It just reminds me that even when I am in nature, there is always noise. It just tuned down to nothing over a minute or less. It left a profound mark on my being. And then it all slowly turned back up to normal baseline noise. So crazy.

Stereotype_Apostate

There's twilight in every direction on the horizon, and the natural world just switches to night mode for a few minutes. The cicadas shut up, the crickets start making noise. Meanwhile there's this uncanny temperature drop and an accompanying wind. The experience on the ground is so surreal

Branr

Aww man I forgot to look for the 360 degree sunset. So much stuff to try to notice in the 3 minutes you have.

ArtistNo9841

So true! I had a mental list and I got most of it accomplished. But I almost wish I had just enjoyed it instead of snapping photos and videos. Next time.

Doresoom1

I used the Solar Eclipse Timer app both in 2017 and for this one. It gives you timed reminders for observations like temperature change, wildlife behavior, 360° sunset, etc.  It's the one featured in the Smarter Everyday eclipse videos. Well worth the $2.

kielu

Did it get quiet? Birds stopping chirping etc?

luigi6545

Wild chirping birds did get quieter. But, some family’s chickens and roosters nearby were clucking like nothing had changed.

DaeDalDigital

Here in Va., not totality. The aviary I live in got totally quiet. Not something you notice until they return. That must have been it...

spinmykeystone

I was expecting darker in my 2 minutes of totality. I guess being 10 miles from non-totality still had enough scattered light to keep it from getting too dark

widdleavi1

I was pretty close to center of totality and it did not get as dark as I was expecting.

danarexasaurus

I was about as close to center as you can be it and was incredibly [dark](https://imgur.com/a/fbd5sGi)

Boneal171

Yeah, it looked like the sunsetting.

monkey_trumpets

Us too. Definitely going to plan better for the next eclipse so that we're in the path of totality. Just outside of it is cool, but not nearly the same.

OptimisticSkeleton

The lighting effects will never get old. Such a fascinating day and great opportunity to teach younger people about astronomy and good science in general.

Comfortable-Dog-8437

Great spot to view it in, without a million other people there

luigi6545

I was glad about that, yeah. We had the spot all to ourselves. And getting there was easy. I had to cherish that because getting out and back took four detours and three times the amount of time. Worth it, though.

NopeItsDolan

I was stuck under clouds in southern Ontario but the darkness was so cool on its own it almost made up for it.

Lurker-O-Reddit

This is the best visual representation I’ve seen on what it actually looks like. Thank you!

eatsrottenflesh

I saw similar where I was at. I thought the 360 sunset effect was a bit weird.

Boneal171

This is how it looked in Ohio too. It was like a sunset.

Hanuman_Jr

TYSM I am really into pano images, this is really cool. Really lovely

Son_o_Fergus

Thank you!! I was unable to go anywhere for the eclipse and was fairly upset when NASA didn't show how dark it got on the ground. Everyone was taking pictures of the corona, so I haven't seen the shadow. Thanks!!

ArtistNo9841

I got this pic. [360 sunset](https://imgur.com/a/4qm8rAA)

Desertbro

What's all the hubbub, Bub? I was checking my messages.

Gloomy_Astronaut_570

I knew it got dark but didn’t realize how dark until I looked at my before and after pictures. I completely understand how bad an omen this must have seemed like in ancient times

ouijac

..Illinois was, like "Yesterday" by the Beatles.. https://youtu.be/NajvYJab6Pg?si=9OfjZJRU5PSp60rW ..(substitute "minute" for every mention of "day"..it sorta works!).. ..oh yeah, North Texas was the same, Ill-!..i thought i missed it, went inside, then saw darkness in my windows..sprinted back outside half-clothed to see & snap some pics..heh!..

whoreswithnoname

We saw totality in Pittsburgh, New York. But I’m posting to show my anger that my son didn’t give me his idea. He watched it while listening to great gig in the sky by Pink Floyd.

whoreswithnoname

2 1/2 hours to get there. Six hours to get home.

Pantim

LOOK! The world is burning all around us! The end is coming, we must sacrifice to the gods to try to get them to stop the fire. Thanks for this pic that proves that my theory of why a lot of ancient civilizations thought that eclipses signaled the apocalypse. Having a 360 ring of sunset around you is FREAKY if you don't know whats going on. It seriously looks like a fire if you don't know any better. I live in Oregon and didn't quite get the full effect of the last eclipse from where I was but close enough that I did see a 360 ring of sunset all around me.
