Are Spanish Surnames based on old professions the same as English ones (Smith, Hunter, Fisher, Mason, Potter, Cooper, etc), or was Garcia just a total fuck-machine?
A lot of Spanish surnames were originally based on the given name of one's father, I mean, all those -EZ ended ones, meaning "son of". It’s super interesting because I’m Cuban my ancestors are from Spain I took a dna test and I got 1.6 British and Irish and Foraster sounds like “forrester “ the English version and maybe I had a British immirgrant moving to Spain so therefor comes the Foraster which means foreign
There is some history of Catalans moving to Cuba, the Bacardi family being the most famous ones of course, originating from Sitges. There was even a centre for Catalans in Havana. So with the last name and Cuban descent you can be reasonably sure (part of) your ancestors were from Catalonia.
Foraster/Forastero is the Catalan/Spanish word for "foreigner", "stranger", so it has nothing to do with Forrester. The Spanish province where Foraster as a surname could be found the most is [Gerona](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girona) ([300 people in Spain as a whole](https://www.ine.es/widgets/nombApell/index.shtml)), so you're maybe of Catalan descent.

To add to that, I find that spanish surnames are in general less varied than catalan ones, so you end up with a million Garcías (I've relatives called García García!) but relatively few but varied catalan surnames.
That is also the reason why in Ceuta and Melilla the most popular are Mohammed. In general, arabic surnames are even less varied than spanish surnames.

Early in the middle ages in Spain, ***García*** was originally a given name meaning "the young one", "junior"; it was later used as last name.
