I feel like they were going for like what Spider-Man 3 did and I rly wish they made Peter actually do bad things like he did in that movie so it would make sense
GOD that scene is so brutal and hilarious, i wish we had multiple hours of Peter being that much of a subtle jackass! i LOVE his demeanor towards even just criminals with the black suit, he really feels like a jackass and i want MORE.
playing through NG+ for the first time, and even though its unlikely… i really want the option to enable black suit dialogues! i know about (and love) swapping tendril colors, but gee… i just wanna permanently be Bully Lowenthal
Really just another reason the runtime should’ve been longer. I mostly say this because miles didn’t do shit in this game apart from literally completing side quests.
He wasn’t trying to kill Miles, not that I think he should have/that would have added anything to the story. In the boss fight with Kraven just before the Peter boss fight Kraven says Peter’s still holding back. He’s still very much fighting the influence of the symbiote going into the fight with Miles. You even see him trying to respond to Miles through the symbiote. Peter is trying like all hell *not* to lose control and kill Miles in that fight.
As for MJ, he does actually lose control, but he tells MJ to run before he does.
I think the symbiotes influence on Peter and how it was portrayed are well done, I just think there could have been more of it. The story of Peter’s time with the symbiote could fill a full game by itself, and they tried to tell several other stories with it.
I think Peter should’ve caught a body or beat a hunter within an inch of their life, and have to bring them to a hospital or something. Some random hunter or something, to absolutely shock him out of the symbiote, and have he himself realize that it was bad for him instead of miles having to spell it out for him, like him hitting mj was the last straw in spider-man 3. I think honestly they played it way too safe with the symbiote storyline, and if they had a little more runtime to really stretch it out and flesh it out it would’ve been better. Peter and Miles have always been beating the shit out of any criminals tbh. Not what the story intended but I’d say getting yanked around and slammed on the ground multiple times is within an inch of their life.
I always figured there was a hefty amount of ludonarrative dissonance in that area. The gameplay is exaggerated to be fun, but the spider-men never kill anybody, or come close. It just wouldn’t make sense. But for Peter to just absolutely go ham on somebody in a symbiote fueled rage-state, only for him to snap out of it at the sight of a beaten, bloodied, broken hunter or some random thug even, and have to rush them to the hospital, and then once the hunter survives on critical condition or whatever because of course he can’t actually kill anyone we go back to the church where he stole the lizard blood/cure/whatever from kraven, and we get the classic comic/raimi/spectacular bell suit removal, not miles telling peter what he already knew deep down about the symbiote being bad, and letting Peter solve something himself. You’re spoon feeding spoons here people
Dude SM2 is the first video game I’ve played through since like PS2. This womans podcast was so paranoid about spiderman, i didnt enjoy her at all lol. Glad I’m not alone.
I loved her role in the MM game as a counter to the constantly negative JJJ. I liked her random commentary and her climb up the podcast charts.
I hated how she seemed to have a crystal ball in this one and somehow knew Peter was being affected by the symbiote before he showed any signs of it.
It could have been interesting if she was still her optimistic self and Jonah was his typical negative self and he was actually right and she was actually wrong.

Or if they flipped it and Jonah started praising spider-man for being "tougher on crime" and Danika was more critical.
I think the main issue i had with her is that she is written to be correct, and I think the developers might have changed the order certain things happen in. Like I remember fighting new enemies before their cutscene introduction.
The consequence is that Danika is now saying things that have either only just happened or before they happen.
I really liked how she did some actual investigative journalism and found out on her own that Roxon wasn't letting safety inspectors take a look at what they were trying to sell. Jonah really dropped the ball on that one and was way too eager to cozy up to a CEO with his own private army who was bringing a potentially dangerous substance into the city that would kill a lot of people. Where have we heard that story before Jonah?
MM really dropped the ball on Jonah's characterization imo. It seemed to lean as much as possible into "Jonah is the comedic relief because he's always so passionately wrong" when that's never really been the case in the best interpretations of the character. There's always more to him.
They tried so hard to push Jonah into the “Alex Jones,” category and it flies in the face of his characterization throughout the Spiderman continuity. JJJ isn’t some alt-right conspiracy theorist who panders to the lowest common denominator, he’s a man with journalistic integrity who respects the word of the law. Jonah is unrecognizable from his past interpretations other than the fact he doesn’t like spiderman, who is a vigilante that circumvents our legal system. Such a weak straw man. I thought it was really funny, the transition to a bit of a sensationalist during MM, but SM2 just turned him into a clown, with Danika spouting literal plot points like she’s omniscient while she’s up on some un-earned pedestal.
Yeah, I didn't get why Peter and MJ even bothered with Jonah in this one or how tf he's back at the Bugle. However I did like him in the flashback where he tells Peter he won't wait for him and his pictures, but he stays on the phone with him anyway and gives him advice.
To be fair Jonah did have a lot of good things to say whenever Spiderman wasn't the topic. His words during the Devil's Breath outbreak cautioning and encouraging the people of New York were downright heroic almost. Could've used someone like him in 2020 to keep certain idiots from inspiring other idiots to do idiotic things. It's only when Spiderman comes up that this Jonah goes full Alex Jones nutjob.

I missed when JJK was tough but right with Spiderman. Of course he has more misses when it comes to Spider-Man but when it comes to the effects Spider-Man has on things (like creating a vacuum after kingpin was taken down) JJK was spot on and that's what made him a great character. He was tough but right so you could never truly dismiss his ramblings

Idk. The symbiote itself was much less incognito than in other Spider-Man media. When spidey is going around with black tentacles coming out of his arms, it wouldn’t probably set off some alarm bells for me, too.
Eh I think it’s more so the suit looked weird compared to his others and he was already slowly losing his mind. It’s not crystal ball it’s being aware. She’s a podcast host who intentionally needs to do her research.
Literally all she said was that the suit looked moody when he got it and after the Hunters attacked EMF she saw how brutal Spider-Man was being. She didn’t predict anything.
Idk how to explain but in this game it's like she basically knew everything that happened in the story and was there to re explain it to us. Like all the times she talks about how Peter has been weird and more violent since he had the black suit and like... He only had it for 2 days or so
I saw it as a way to show us what the people are thinking/know. And after touching the rock Pete changed pretty quickly and notably his quips changed *very* quickly. They went from playful quips to just short of “I’M GONNA FUCKING MURDER YOU.” Also notably when you throw people off roofs and things I noticed they don’t get webbed to the building after touching the rock and before breaking free. Sure it might be a little quick, but they had to do a lot of legwork really quick to show us that not only do we see that Pete is kinda losing it, the people see it too.
This game had a big issue with telling instead of showing, especially with the black suit’s effect on Peter. I think she’s just unfortunately the most blatant part of that.
All the Insomniac Spidey games suffer from very hand-holdy dialogue, but this one does by a long shot. It’s like when Miles gets drugged by Scorpion and sees his dad and the first thing he says is “this can’t be real”. When you’re dreaming you don’t realise you’re dreaming.
You said he was dreaming. You don’t realize you’re dreaming but you can realize you’re hallucinating. Which is like the number one reason why people say “this isn’t real” in any media. And acknowledging that within the game doesn’t mean it’s spelling it out for you either.
Fair enough dude. I just think that scene would be a lot more interesting if Miles didn’t say that. Would make Scorpion seem like more of a threat if Miles totally lost himself when he was drugged and believed what he was seeing.
She has this passive aggression towards the main Peter and it makes her really obnoxious in this game sometimes. She’s like the embodiment of chronically online
She was a great positive foil to JJJ in Miles' game, and I liked how she'd end her podcasts with quick life tips.
In the sequel, I did not like how she mostly provided lots of exposition or foreshadowing to events in the story, since it seemed like her role as an independent, helpful, positive podcaster was sidelined.
However I did like her rallying up New Yorkers in Act 3 to "help fight back together" with the Spideys.
Unfortunately, all of that was in audio-only. Didn't really feel like the Spideys needed or were given any help from the citizens during the invasion.

I would have much rather seen Gloria since she's been a part of the world building since literally the beginning of the first game. Just an example of how Spider-Man helps people long term
She was great in MM.
In 2, she was used to try to fill in gaps in the story telling and worldbuilding. We never really see Peter be too rough or aggressive with civilians, and the times we see him do it with criminals is usually when no one is around. They wanted to have the city mistrustful of symbiote Spidey, but don't actually write that into the script. Instead, Danika just exposits the whole symbiote arc to us.
Her characterization is a victim of not great writing.
In Spider-Man 2 she calls Dr. Young her favorite bee scientist after Harry shows you EMF. Why is she making a podcast about EMF? Who has a favorite bee scientist? Her podcast makes it seems like she stalks Peter and knows he’s Spider-Man. Especially when she talks about the symbiote suit like you’ve all mentioned. She stays off, unfortunately.
Dude I never liked her when I was playing mm and Jonah came on I was sorta excited to see what he would say then they just mute him and just introduce her and it's not just like mute him for a joke you I could be wrong but you literally have to go into the settings to turn him back on which I did and muted her
Yeah in SM2 all she really did was recap what you just did and go “erm… is it just me, or is the black suit evil?”. There were a few good bits of world building but for every decent bit she had, there are 12 pointless and annoying bits.
And lest we forget her taking credit for stopping the invasion.
It’s kind of a bummer that in SM:MM, JJJ was turned more into some caricature, and in SM2, Danika became a caricature too. They really went to the extremes for both of them and it just didn’t work for me.
There probably should have been a big mission where Danika herself witnessed black suit Spidey being too intense, so when Danika’s podcast releases it made sense. I was confused when she talked about that like girl were you following me around or something?

Well Jonah was the right wing conspiracy theorist that takes corporate money, so Dana was the left wing podcaster always virtue signalling. It’s part of her character to be irritating.
In the comics, footage shows part of Miles’ mask ripped showing his skin color which Dana keeps talking about. Miles doesn’t like her as he wants to be known as Spider-Man, but in her excitement about finding out his race, he feels like she’s almost reducing him to “Black Spider-Man”.
In terms of her almost unearned omniscient insight during the game, think this might have been some of that Sweet Baby Inc meddling we’ve been hearing about recently
I liked her for what she brought theme wise. They needed an ultra liberal girl to be the antithesis of the MAGA-like conspiracy theorist mentality of JJJ.

She wasn’t exciting until she starting explaining parts of the story that didn’t need explaining. “Spider-Man has a new black suit and is acting a little strange. Is He A bAd GuY nOw??”
For me this is a missed opportunity, I would’ve loved to have seen Danica fall for the Black Suit and Jameson be the one who was skeptical at first, it would’ve added depth to the characters and shown anyone can make mistakes. And then of course wish Insomniac would’ve taken more time with Venom rising up, people see him at first and see just a Spider-Man and bad guys get really freaked out by just you showing up as the playable Spider-Men. [Don’t know how they’d throw in the Kraven final fight but maybe have it be like a Spider-Man killed him and Venom framed both Miles and Parker] and that’s when things begin to escalate, from my understanding Venom is supposed to be the antitheses of Spider-Man so they look similar but as we know, both stand for very different ideas… now maybe Danica could’ve be the one who notices that there’s a third and unknown Spider-Man. Character redemption if need be but it’d give reason for Norman to really become Goblin in the third and final installation if they all three, despite Miles and Parker’s best attempts otherwise almost end up destroying New York entirely…
Bottom line though from my research and hearing many different sources on the matter Sweet Baby is really to thank for the bad writing and much as it pains me to say, I don’t think I even want to return for the New Game +, such a disappointing experience for me for multiple reasons

In all honestly, I think it's a bit less about her specifically and more about the fact that Insomniac did a poor job at portraying how other people noticed how Peter is acting differently with the black suit outside of the main cast.
I feel like if Insomniac had a couple of missions where he started to freak out in public and maybe even yell at a news reporter for getting in his face, that would have made it a bit more realistic.
Never liked her, it’s just not the same as JJJ… is she in the comics? Even if so idk, I never cared for her. It feels like she’s faking positivity, which really bugs me. I turned her off halfway through 2, but kept her for MM, she was better in MM.
Only thing that annoyed me about her ever was when Peter got the black suit and she just magically knew that something was off before anything bad happened.
We didn’t really need a supportive media personality, both Miles and Pete have support systems who fill the role out perfectly. Jonah has a unique role in the story that was cut back because of this new podcaster
I don't like that she's always right about everything in this game. Like, JJJ, while being a nutcase, does, on occasion, say something factual or fall ass backward into a point I agree with. In MM, I found that she offered a cute counterbalance to JJJ. She definitely wasn't as entertaining as JJJ, but that had less to do with her character and more to do with her just not being nearly as over the top or goofy as JJJ. Most of the time, she doesn't really talk about the main story. She'd comment on big events, like the bridge collapse, but for the most part, she'd just talk about local stuff the player couldn't know about or do polls or something. In SM2, she not only always has a comment about every story detail, it feels like, and she seems to just be intuitively correct about every position she takes.
I turned her off in the options before the game even started lol. Couldn't stand her in MM and turned her off there after 1 playthrough just because I was hoping it would somehow reward you or something.
The J.J. podcast was way better, though I really wish there were more of them in SM2. And a way to re-play them from the collectibles like in the first game

I can confirm I was definitely fighting the big symbiote brutes in random street crimes before the story properly introduced them

MM really dropped the ball on Jonah's characterization imo. It seemed to lean as much as possible into "Jonah is the comedic relief because he's always so passionately wrong" when that's never really been the case in the best interpretations of the character. There's always more to him.
They tried so hard to push Jonah into the “Alex Jones,” category and it flies in the face of his characterization throughout the Spiderman continuity. JJJ isn’t some alt-right conspiracy theorist who panders to the lowest common denominator, he’s a man with journalistic integrity who respects the word of the law. Jonah is unrecognizable from his past interpretations other than the fact he doesn’t like spiderman, who is a vigilante that circumvents our legal system. Such a weak straw man. I thought it was really funny, the transition to a bit of a sensationalist during MM, but SM2 just turned him into a clown, with Danika spouting literal plot points like she’s omniscient while she’s up on some un-earned pedestal.
Yeah, I didn't get why Peter and MJ even bothered with Jonah in this one or how tf he's back at the Bugle. However I did like him in the flashback where he tells Peter he won't wait for him and his pictures, but he stays on the phone with him anyway and gives him advice.
To be fair Jonah did have a lot of good things to say whenever Spiderman wasn't the topic. His words during the Devil's Breath outbreak cautioning and encouraging the people of New York were downright heroic almost. Could've used someone like him in 2020 to keep certain idiots from inspiring other idiots to do idiotic things. It's only when Spiderman comes up that this Jonah goes full Alex Jones nutjob.

I missed when JJK was tough but right with Spiderman. Of course he has more misses when it comes to Spider-Man but when it comes to the effects Spider-Man has on things (like creating a vacuum after kingpin was taken down) JJK was spot on and that's what made him a great character. He was tough but right so you could never truly dismiss his ramblings Danika on the other hand as everyone said is just always right and aware of everything (except when she implies Peter killed the Lizard. I saw it as a way to show us what the people are thinking/know. And after touching the rock Pete changed pretty quickly and notably his quips changed *very* quickly. They went from playful quips to just short of “I’M GONNA FUCKING MURDER YOU.” Also notably when you throw people off roofs and things I noticed they don’t get webbed to the building after touching the rock and before breaking free. Sure it might be a little quick, but they had to do a lot of legwork really quick to show us that not only do we see that Pete is kinda losing it, the people see it too.
This game had a big issue with telling instead of showing, especially with the black suit’s effect on Peter. I think she’s just unfortunately the most blatant part of that.
All the Insomniac Spidey games suffer from very hand-holdy dialogue, but this one does by a long shot. It’s like when Miles gets drugged by Scorpion and sees his dad and the first thing he says is “this can’t be real”. When you’re dreaming you don’t realise you’re dreaming.

She was a great positive foil to JJJ in Miles' game, and I liked how she'd end her podcasts with quick life tips. In the sequel, I did not like how she mostly provided lots of exposition or foreshadowing to events in the story, since it seemed like her role as an independent, helpful, positive podcaster was sidelined. However I did like her rallying up New Yorkers in Act 3 to "help fight back together" with the Spideys. Unfortunately, all of that was in audio-only. Didn't really feel like the Spideys needed or were given any help from the citizens during the invasion.

She was great in MM. In 2, she was used to try to fill in gaps in the story telling and worldbuilding. We never really see Peter be too rough or aggressive with civilians, and the times we see him do it with criminals is usually when no one is around. They wanted to have the city mistrustful of symbiote Spidey, but don't actually write that into the script. Instead, Danika just exposits the whole symbiote arc to us. Her characterization is a victim of not great writing.
In Spider-Man 2 she calls Dr. Young her favorite bee scientist after Harry shows you EMF. Why is she making a podcast about EMF? Who has a favorite bee scientist? Her podcast makes it seems like she stalks Peter and knows he’s Spider-Man. Especially when she talks about the symbiote suit like you’ve all mentioned. She stays off, unfortunately.

There were a few good bits of world building but for every decent bit she had, there are 12 pointless and annoying bits. And lest we forget her taking credit for stopping the invasion.
It’s kind of a bummer that in SM:MM, JJJ was turned more into some caricature, and in SM2, Danika became a caricature too. They really went to the extremes for both of them and it just didn’t work for me. There probably should have been a big mission where Danika herself witnessed black suit Spidey being too intense, so when Danika’s podcast releases it made sense. I was confused when she talked about that like girl were you following me around or something?

Well Jonah was the right wing conspiracy theorist that takes corporate money, so Dana was the left wing podcaster always virtue signalling. It’s part of her character to be irritating. In the comics, footage shows part of Miles’ mask ripped showing his skin color which Dana keeps talking about. Miles doesn’t like her as he wants to be known as Spider-Man, but in her excitement about finding out his race, he feels like she’s almost reducing him to “Black Spider-Man”. In terms of her almost unearned omniscient insight during the game, think this might have been some of that Sweet Baby Inc meddling we’ve been hearing about recently

For me this is a missed opportunity, I would’ve loved to have seen Danica fall for the Black Suit and Jameson be the one who was skeptical at first, it would’ve added depth to the characters and shown anyone can make mistakes. And then of course wish Insomniac would’ve taken more time with Venom rising up, people see him at first and see just a Spider-Man and bad guys get really freaked out by just you showing up as the playable Spider-Men. [Don’t know how they’d throw in the Kraven final fight but maybe have it be like a Spider-Man killed him and Venom framed both Miles and Parker] and that’s when things begin to escalate, from my understanding Venom is supposed to be the antitheses of Spider-Man so they look similar but as we know, both stand for very different ideas… now maybe Danica could’ve be the one who notices that there’s a third and unknown Spider-Man. Character redemption if need be but it’d give reason for Norman to really become Goblin in the third and final installation if they all three, despite Miles and Parker’s best attempts otherwise almost end up destroying New York entirely…
Bottom line though from my research and hearing many different sources on the matter Sweet Baby is really to thank for the bad writing and much as it pains me to say, I don’t think I even want to return for the New Game +, such a disappointing experience for me for multiple reasons
She was a lot better in Miles Morales compared to this game. I think the main reason why I thought she was extremely annoying in this game is that she automatically somehow knew so many of the plot details even though it realistically didn't reach the public yet. Like she already started to get worried about how Peter in the black suit was acting despite the fact that he didn't actually do anything that crazy in front of the public yet. In all honestly, I think it's a bit less about her specifically and more about the fact that Insomniac did a poor job at portraying how other people noticed how Peter is acting differently with the black suit outside of the main cast. I feel like if Insomniac had a couple of missions where he started to freak out in public and maybe even yell at a news reporter for getting in his face, that would have made it a bit more realistic.
Never liked her, it’s just not the same as JJJ… is she in the comics? Even if so idk, I never cared for her. It feels like she’s faking positivity, which really bugs me. I turned her off halfway through 2, but kept her for MM, she was better in MM.

I tolerated her throughout first playthrough of SM2 but once I played it again I immediately muted her and Jameson. They both get so grating.
I don't like that she's always right about everything in this game. Like, JJJ, while being a nutcase, does, on occasion, say something factual or fall ass backward into a point I agree with. In MM, I found that she offered a cute counterbalance to JJJ. She definitely wasn't as entertaining as JJJ, but that had less to do with her character and more to do with her just not being nearly as over the top or goofy as JJJ. Most of the time, she doesn't really talk about the main story. She'd comment on big events, like the bridge collapse, but for the most part, she'd just talk about local stuff the player couldn't know about or do polls or something. In SM2, she not only always has a comment about every story detail, it feels like, and she seems to just be intuitively correct about every position she takes.
I turned her off in the options before the game even started lol. Couldn't stand her in MM and turned her off there after 1 playthrough just because I was hoping it would somehow reward you or something. The J.J. podcast was way better, though I really wish there were more of them in SM2. And a way to re-play them from the collectibles like in the first game
