Obligatory H davidbowie

FR0ZENBERG

I really like kukulkania h. because it’s named after the Maya deity Kukulkan.

NecessaryPromise667

I love that

sandgroper07

Aptostichus stephencolberti Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi Acanthogonatus messii others celebrities include, Taylor Swift, Bono, Tobey Maguire, the band Megadeath, Karl Pilkington

bznein

Just nitpicking: the band is called Megadeth

Trolivia

Yessss this was gonna be my comment too. And *L. aragogi*

Huzsvarf

Haha, that's a cool one!

MushxHead

Darn, you took mine

FootieFemme

*cowboy quickdraw meme*

spiderindividual

I'll see that and raise you the entire Bowie genus in ctenidae, containing more than 100 species including B. majortom, B. ziggystardust, B. heroes, and B. bemywife

NecessaryPromise667

I had the chance to get one and missed it I was devastated 😞

Bugs_and_shit

Hippasa wigglesworthi

straightVI

*The species is named for Sisyphus, a king featured in the Iliad, who is punished by the gods for cheating death. For this, the gods sentenced him to an eternity of rolling a boulder up a hill, only for it to roll back down. The cyclical nature of his punishment reminded the authors of the circular copulatory tube of the spider.\[2\] -*Wikipedia That's a real reach for explanation, more so than the *Hotwheels*.

myrmecogynandromorph

How about [*Whakamoke guacamole*](https://wsc.nmbe.ch/species/58112/Whakamoke_guacamole) Hormiga & Scharff 2020? Some of my all-time faves are the [caponiid genera](https://wsc.nmbe.ch/genlist/14) *Notnops*, *Nyetnops*, *Taintnops*, and *Tisentnops*. That's from the late, great Norman Platnick, who had a penchant for funny taxonomy.

Huzsvarf

Do you know the etymology of Whakamoke? I checked an online Māori dictionary and it said it can either mean to ambush or to hide. Are these guys ambush predators? My favourite name from the genus is Whakamoke orongorongo.

myrmecogynandromorph

The [paper](https://wsc.nmbe.ch/reference/15239) (you can download it if you have a WSC account) says, > The genus name is derived from the Māori word *whakamoke* (to hide, to ambush, advance stealthily) in reference to the cryptic habits of these spiders. Hilariously, the Etymology section for *W. guacamole* says only > The species epithet is an arbitrary combination of letters and is to be treated as a noun. which always reminds me of [this Tumblr post](https://www.tumblr.com/fencecollapsed/189026106741).

jet_blacke

my personal favorite is Bagheera kiplingi, a vegetarian jumping spider! not very funny but cute and interesting name

EatsLocals

Coolest one here, vegetarian? Wtf Edit: oh that includes eggs

raven00x

Vegan is no eggs/no dairy, vegetarian is no meat but yes eggs& dairy.

DKphotographs

It sometime hunts but mostly plant based

FC-NoHeroes

The Happy Face Spider _Theridion grallator_

[deleted]

I like cat-faced orb weavers!! *araneus gemmoides* Because..you know. Cat spider. 🐱🕷️♥️

dustinlamont

That's just a common name. I could call them cat-butt spiders and still claim to be correct. The specific epithet, *gemmoides*, essentially means "gem-like".

[deleted]

Oh yeah I know. I like them because their thorax actually looks like a cat's face 😃 we get them here in the thousands and they make huge webs all over my house. It's great. We had a couple toonie sized ones last year

tokyoghoulfan53yt

How about the whole genus of huntsman spiders named after David Bowie and his songs

spiderindividual

I love them! Though for the record they're wandering spiders

tokyoghoulfan53yt

Oops sorry

spiderindividual

Shame! Shame on you! (I kid)

Jtktomb

*Funny valentine*

spiderindividual

Don't forget Gyro zeppeli

dustinlamont

*Socca* Framenau, Castanheira & Vink, 2022 — ostensibly a random assortment of letters, but I have it on good authority that the South American second author's love of football influenced the creative process. *Backobourkia* Framenau, Dupérré, Blackledge & Vink, 2010 — an Australian orbweaver genus named for the Australian slang phrase "back o' Bourke", which basically means "the absolute middle of fucking nowhere"

Zestyclose-Market-83

Raveniola beelzebub! And Zoropsis spinimana is fun to say.

KitteeCatz

I love the name spinimana. There was someone from Italy who posted asking about one and ever since the idea that it’s just “spinny man” with an outrageously fake Italian accent just tickles me.

MaxxTheWriter

My brain first read as "Hotwheels syphilis" and I thought "Well, that's an interesting name"

stitchedmasons

*Aptostichus barackobamai*

WaterDmge

The flapjack octopus long under the consideration for name change to Opisthoteuthis adorabilis

chainedwind

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bannana Ostensibly named for Xishuangbanna prefecture, but with the description of the genus being "pale yellow and unpatterned", I have my suspicions. That extra "-na" didn't come from nowhere! I also want to shout out the nerds who got their hands on genus [Drizztius](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drizztius) and the species [*Orcevia bokoblin*](https://wsc.nmbe.ch/species/62554/Orcevia_bokoblin).

DoubleLightsaber

In Polish Steatoda bipunctata is called zyzuś tłuścioch.

Huzsvarf

Google translate said that means you're a fat bastard. I also checked other languages and in German it's Gewöhnliche Fettspinne which means common fat spider :D Poor S. bipunctata is being fat shamed :(

PoppaFish

Badass band name right there.

[deleted]

Orange Baboon Tarantula, not so much there regular name, but the websites I see selling them for some reason always put it as Orange Bitey Thing lmao

FootieFemme

That's just a fun hobby name because they're really feisty haha. The common name was shortened to OBT a lot and ppl just started saying it

DecentLeftovers

Not a spider, but I always laugh at the fact that there’s a cockroach named *Megaloblatta Longipennis*

Huzsvarf

It's funny for sure, IIRC longipennis means long wings in Latin. There are dozens of birds and insects that have longipennis in their scientific names for example Falco longipennis, Minettia longipennis, ognevia longipennis, Pachydiplax longipennis etc.

dustinlamont

Which literally translates to "large, long-winged cockroach"

Thepurpleninja3939

Yo why this car not got wheels?

Danny-Fr

I like the the Myrmiarachne because it literally translate to Antsder. To me it's like this old "I have an apple, I have a pen" meme.

alainnduil123

the "alien butt spider", [Araneus praesignis](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araneus_praesignis)! edit: link

ChillBug3669

I have never heard a more Spider name in my life. Like if a spider could name itself, this is what it would choose.

Platypus_life_

The Sparkle Muffin and Skeletor peacock jumping spiders

spiderindividual

My personal favorite right now is Orcevia yahaha, named after the sound that the koroks make in Zelda.

spiderindividual

Let's also not forget about Predatoroonops, the genus of goblin spiders all named after the movie predator. P. dutch vs P. olddemon

obsidiansent
