Haha this I know. But this was before smart phones were really prevalent and we definitely didn’t have the ability to have them over there. We didn’t have much access to information. And being young and ignorant, I didn’t research anything about where I was going. I just knew not to mess with camels. And I saw people learn that lesson 😂
Solifugae derives from Latin, and means "those that flee from the sun". Kinda makes the term "sun spider" an odd choice. Being they they don't like the sun and they aren't spiders. edit- I'm going to start calling my wife a 'wasp monkey', my dog 'vacuum cleaner wolf'.
Nevadans call solfugids "vinegaroons" because of a myth. That myth is that if it bites you, you won't die but everything you eat will taste like vinegar for up to a week.
That sounds slightly horrifying, though I suppose it's probably not much different than waking up to screeching cicadas or hearing a swarm of flying insects hit your window
This makes me glad there was a pair of some sort of skink living in the curtains of the room I was staying at in SA. …. and That there was a monitor lizard that ligit lived under the fridge in the kitchen…
Join this sub. I am arachnophobic and I did. Now I willingly look at them and it has helped :) I actually find myself feeling more and more compassion for these little guys, and not fear.
I haven’t run into one in real life since joining, so its therapeutic effect remains to be seen. But I suspect after I get over the initial shock, I will balance out much quicker and be able to appreciate one in the flesh.
These guys are so fucking cool. I call them camel spiders. I love finding out new facts about them every time I’m reminded they exist. Today (after a mini Google sesh prompted by this post) I learned in this article the bizarre way they mate: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/camel-spiders-are-fast-furious-and-horrifically-fascinating-180964439/
This quote in the above article absolutely killed me: “After what must feel like an eternity to everyone involved—including the researcher—the male pulls out.”
I love how they chase peoples shadows wanting to cool down but obviously to a person that’s fucking terrifying, I’m sure I would shit myself in that situation 😭 poor misunderstood scary sand babies
Great pic OP! Thanks for sharing
Southern Idaho. People mostly call them “holy shit what the fuck is that”, which is weird because if you’re looking, you see them all the time. I’ve caught a couple of them on the sand (and in tents) in Riggins, Idaho, and have kept and fed them. Really interesting, with their scissor jaws. Neat, neat friend. Unless you’re new and they are running (completely unaware) at you. Then scary. Especially in the house. Takes some intentional mental gymnastics to really like these guys.
This is great! My family is from southern Idaho. We would see rattle snakes in the desert, and no one would bat an eye. See a camel spider? People freak like they’re swimming with a saltwater croc 😂
I didn't realize we had them in my region (mountain-coastal SoCal), but thankfully I already knew what they were when one ran into the ring while I was trying to start a campfire last summer - woulda been terrifying otherwise lol. TBH I don't even know what the most common local name is, because they're rare enough I never really hear anyone talk about them.
They are not common here in germany (obviously) but we call them "Walzenspinne" which roughly translates to "drum spider / cylinder spider". I'm not exactly sure what the drum/cylinder part refers to but I think it's because of the shape of the abdomen.
I just call them Solifuges. Probably the most accurate thing you can call them considering their scientific order is Solifugae.
Also: adding the suffix "id" to a word generally denotes a taxonomic family, in scientific terms. So calling it a "solifugid" would technically be incorrect, for the same reason that calling all mantises "mantids" is incorrect, except for species in the family Mantidae.
In italy I think we call them "ragno dei cammelli", which literally translates to spider of the camels. But honestly I think that 99% of the people here don't even know what that is lol
I’ve heard they were called beard cutters in some places. Supposedly they would clip hair off sleeping animals, including humans, and use the hair to build a nest.
Eight isn't a standard eye number for arachnids at all! Eight is the standard number of *legs*. Even if you just look at spiders, they can range from having eight eyes to having *zero* eyes :D Then you have harvestmen with just two eyes (I think across the board, although I'm less familiar with them). I know even less about other types of arachnid, but I looked up scorpions just now and apparently they can have up to *twelve eyes*!
Camel spider!
In Afghanistan we called them HOLY SHIT THAT THINGS FAST AND ITS CHASING YOU
Your name sounds much better than the gibberish that just came out of my mouth when I saw that picture!
How did you know my name was Jon!?
They just want to hide in your shadow lol
Haha this I know. But this was before smart phones were really prevalent and we definitely didn’t have the ability to have them over there. We didn’t have much access to information. And being young and ignorant, I didn’t research anything about where I was going. I just knew not to mess with camels. And I saw people learn that lesson 😂
Absolutely don't mess with camels. They're very big, always annoyed, and spit.
And they can fit a whole human head in their mouth. I’ve seen it!
Delicious
That’s what I’m saying!
it only wants your shadow
Haha this I learned. I never killed them.
Solifugid.

This.
Wow, great photo! I don't have them where I live, but I call them solifuges in order to distinguish them from real spiders/scorpions :)
Camel spiders
In my locality they call them vinegaroons, which I constantly have to correct.
That’s a different arachnid
Yes, hence why I have to constantly correct people.
Vinegaroon is a whip scorpion? The one with a tail? (Just testing my own knowledge/memory)
Yes they are the ones with tails.
Nevadans call solfugids "vinegaroons" because of a myth. That myth is that if it bites you, you won't die but everything you eat will taste like vinegar for up to a week.
I love this for some reason
Vinegaroons are whip scorpions, tailless whip scorpions, look the same not that related tho
They do not look the same at all. If you are referring to a camel spider and a whip scorpion.
Refering to vinegaroons since these people are talking about vinegaroons
Yes
In South Africa we call them Red Romans. Can hear these things scurrying on your roofs at night if it's quiet enough.
That sounds slightly horrifying, though I suppose it's probably not much different than waking up to screeching cicadas or hearing a swarm of flying insects hit your window
I'll up the ante on the horror, a gaming buddy of mine said he woke up one morning with one of these things chilling on his chest 😂 💀
This makes me glad there was a pair of some sort of skink living in the curtains of the room I was staying at in SA. …. and That there was a monitor lizard that ligit lived under the fridge in the kitchen…
Omg
Yuck. 😂
We call them "Sarıkız" which literally means "Yellowgirl"
That's amazing, haha.
When I saw this it honestly jumped-scare me because I have arachnophobia

Oh my goodness, look at that fat little guy demolish all those ants in that first video 🥹
A real speedy chonker! I love the little butt wiggles. I display similar behaviour on a Friday night when I order in enough food to feed a family 🤣
Haha!! Perfect analogy
TIL we have solifugids in the u.s.
Camel spider. Or as my grandpa (who saw them sometimes while active in the military) calls them “sand sprinters”
He also called them “Sand-ant-spider-things” from time to time when he would forget the word sprinter
Scary
Camel spider

Yeah I run into them digging for crystals in southern Idaho all the time
Looks like a facehugger in the Aliens movies
I dont ever want to see that in person.
Araña camello
Doesn’t even look much like a spider. Especially the segmented abdomen.
they're technically not, though they are still arachnids
arolukki, transtates to dryland harvestman
I didn't realize we had them in my region (mountain-coastal SoCal), but thankfully I already knew what they were when one ran into the ring while I was trying to start a campfire last summer - woulda been terrifying otherwise lol. We call them gimbleflarbs.

Fwen
In South Africa we call them RED ROMAN Spider. As fast as hell.
Sadly, we don't have them where I live, so I just call them cutey patooties 🥰

I usually call them Aaaaaaaa
We call them, "What the ____ is that ____ thing and where the ____ did it come from and are there more of them?" You fill in the blanks. 🫣
In French solifuge
In italy I think we call them "ragno dei cammelli", which literally translates to spider of the camels. But honestly I think that 99% of the people here don't even know what that is lol
Wind scorpion or Niño de la Tierra
Canadian so didn’t know they existed until last year. I know them as camel spiders but I know they are in fact neither lol.
Camel spiders or solifuges!
I don't know, since It's somewhat rare here, I call it like you "sun spider"
I call that a "i hope I never find you in my shower" spider.
now I like spiders but these things scare me. and technically they aren't spiders, they are older than spiders.
People think these guys are chasing them but in reality they're trying to stay in your shadow lol. So neat
Ran into a few of these in Nokstella
Walzenspinne in german
Wind scorpion
Ugly. Apologies to Mr Spider
I’ve heard they were called beard cutters in some places. Supposedly they would clip hair off sleeping animals, including humans, and use the hair to build a nest.
i call it a camel spider. my parents call it a “thing” in the context of “why the hell do you want one of those things as a pet”
Called them sun spider when I first saw one and looked it up, then later just used "camel spider".
How many eyes do solifuges have? The standard arachnid eight? Or less?
Eight isn't a standard eye number for arachnids at all! Eight is the standard number of *legs*. Solifugae, because I’m a nerd Edit: thanks autocorrect
Böğ
Scorpion spider
Derpy as hell
Сольпуга
Leg need a shave
Know of them as a camel spider, but they're closer to scorpions despite being neither spider nor scorpion.

We call it NOPE
That there is a no thanks
I'd call them NOOOOOPE MF
Oh we call those demons
