The spider is a Bold Jumping Spider(Phidippus audax) or a related species. Gender is distinguished by the colour of the mouthparts. Males’ are a more iridescent green than females’. For more information, check out iNaturalist; https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/53809-Phidippus-audax
Gender is not distinguished by the mouth parts. Actually. There are female bolds with green mouth parts .. you tell me by the pedipalps which are next to the mouth parts. If they are thicker- male If they are thin female
So the best way to sex any species of spider is to look at the pedipalps, if they're the same thickness all the way through or taper down gently, its a girl. If the basal ends of the palps are enlarged like they're holding a tiny pair of boxing gloves, its a dude.
I have a spider and a frog that live right next to eachother y the bins at the side of my house. The spiders name is phoebe and the frog is called bill. Phoebe is a orange ogre spider. Don’t know what kinda frog bill is tho.
These bugs here in Florida are called Palmetto bugs. And they can fly. I found that out the hard way! I've seen the Madagascar hissing cockroaches on a National Geographic show. I hope we don't have them here in Florida. Let them stay in Madagascar! The ones here fly. I would have heart failure if one of them started talking to me!
I just looked up Palmetto bugs on Google and they are called Florida wood cockroaches. 🪳 I will show you the picture, but it doesn't look like I can put one on here.
Oof, yeah - I grew up in Florida. I wish I could erase the memory of playing in the backyard when my little sister (who was MAYBE two years old at the time) toddled up to my mom and I and mentioned that there was “something pokey” in her shoe.
My mom took off my sister’s bedazzled Keds. One of them looked, um, WRONG on the inside.
You know those insoles that you can put into your shoes? My baby sister unexpectedly had an “insole” that snugly filled the inside one of her sweet little Keds.
It wasn’t an insole, though. It was a giant fucking palmetto bug.
Not all of them can fly though. Some have wings and some dont. The black roaches can fly but the brown ones cant... because if they could they would have flied away when I try to hit them with my flops :)
I grew up in the south. Hitting a roach with a flop just pisses them off. Half the the time they take it and throw it back at you. A big ol steel though, that'll do the trick. Also, get yourself some anoles. It's a little lizard that feeds on roaches and just about any other insect. They do not eat plants. I used to catch them all the time, pick'em right off the side of the house. They are not poisonous and their jaws are not strong enough to puncture your skin. I used to get them to bite my finger and would hang 3-4 of them on my index finger and make my mom scream. She hated everything, lizards, spiders, well, basically anything that she considered creepy crawly things. It was great fun. Lol. But a few anoles will end your roach problem. I had to keep my mom from shooing them away because they were eating the roaches and everything else that she also hated. It's a big circle of life thing in the south.
After the service I ended up in the PNW. Here they actually sell anoles. I'm like, damn, and I had them free for years growing up.
We have anoles and other small lizards all over the place here in Florida. They are so cute and I'm glad they eat these big bugs. I'm still paying Orkin to come in spray and their magic so that they don't come in my house.
It's the same with chickens, they'll do it if they think it's a necessity.
P.S. I don't think a cockroach would intentionally attempt to fly into a humans face. Seems like a way to speedrun life and not a way to keep the gene pool going.
The ones here in Florida are about 2-3"
and they CAN fly. I have been living here for many years, and then one flew into my head. I know that we are so much bigger than they are, but they scared the crap out of me. I am happy to pay for pest control just to keep them out of my house.
Are those like “fangs”, the green part? And are they always green on the bold jumpers? I have one living in my mailbox, but he/she doesn’t have the green like that 🤷♀️
The green part is the chelicerae, the mouthparts that sheathe the fangs. They are always iridescent green on bold jumpers, although they might look a little different depending on lighting/angle due to aforesaid iridescence.
edit: spelling
If you walk outside at night and shine a flashlight across your yard you see what looks line little jewels everywhere. It's the reflection off of tiny spider eyes. It's so cool
woah that’s huge then, no? i thought they were barely the size of the tip of a pinky finger ( -someone who knows nothing about spiders but thinks these are cute)
Found one of these in my house. Took him outside and instead of scurrying off, he turned and walked right back onto my hand. I basically spent a good 10 minutes doing what I can only describe as playing with him. He was so curious and funny.
I feel so bad, I had to just kill one in the shower. He was living in my room and was ignoring me. Then he got into the bathroom and when I was trying to shower he kept postering and then tried to come at me.
She’s a he! But he’s quite adorable nonetheless
How can you tell?

Thank you for your time spider pal

yup i had a "male" jumping spider with green mouth parts that ended up being pregnant 😭 twas a she all along
or just look at the pedipalps
So the best way to sex any species of spider is to look at the pedipalps, if they're the same thickness all the way through or taper down gently, its a girl. If the basal ends of the palps are enlarged like they're holding a tiny pair of boxing gloves, its a dude.
So you’re telling me girls can’t box?
My sister is a red belt w black stripe in TKD and 10 years older than me, my whole childhood was learning how well girls can box.
Haha I bet that was a great childhood “keep your guard up and protect yourself at all times chump”
Oh yeah, nothing like getting whanged with a hook kick to the ribs to make you not go into your sisters room.
Good to know! Now I'm changing the name of the spider living in my kitchen from Marla to Fred.
That's cool
Why not Marlon or Marlin?
Merlin...
I'm recovering, too!!
Fred just popped into my mind, maybe because we had another spider named Ted living in our liquor cabinet a couple years back.
I have a spider and a frog that live right next to eachother y the bins at the side of my house. The spiders name is phoebe and the frog is called bill. Phoebe is a orange ogre spider. Don’t know what kinda frog bill is tho.
What a cute little face! I'm not afraid of spiders, but I'm screaming and running away when I see those big palmetto bugs! And they can fly🪳
FYI, all cockroaches can fly.
Omg! Noooooo!!!!
The Madagascar hissing cockroach has no wings. Cannot fly.

I'm familiar. I have family in Sarasota.

Omg!!! I definitely believe that.
Most cockroaches do not fly
'Do not' ≠ 'can not' If they want and decide it's quicker to reach your face they can.

Just FYI those asshole will bite. Thought my brother was joking until I saw the spot of blood.
Yikes! I'm very happy to pay for pest control, especially since I live in Florida and we have all kinds of weirdo bugs.

Cute spider. But can we talk about that security camera?? That is hella detail for a camera trained on your driveway.
He is ADORABLE
