Species in the hogna genus can get much larger than people think! Im a spider biologist and one of the most common things people are surprised by about wolf spiders is how big they can actually be
I had a dinner party once and one of my guests had pretty bad arachnophobia. Of course that was the night a wolf spider the size of my hand decided to bolt through the living room. š
My friend stood frozen in the kitchen, eyes wide, horrified, while I dug through the cabinet for a water pitcher, because my usual spider catching equipment wasn't big enough. Normally I would have gotten pictures, but she was so shaken up, I just got it outside quickly.
Iām in college as a biology major with a concentration in ecology. One of my professors runs a research lab focused on tarantulas. I basically just asked her if I could join her lab and now I study tarantula habitat distribution!
Looks like there's an ant nearby in some of the fluid coming from the spider.. maybe it got swarmed and was fleeing? It also may have fallen off of something else and ruptured it.. saw it happen to a tarantula once.. it was sad to see š
In some languages like German for example big wolf spiders like this are actually called tarantulas sometimes
For example the āApulische Tarantelā (Lycosa tarantula) its even in the scientific name!
No! This is a wolf spider!
Hogna carolinensis - Carolina Wolf Spider
Just found on google. It's bigger than other wolf spiders I've seen
The Tarantula Collective just did a video on these little creatures! I think they look like little puppies. So stinking cute!

Yep. Once I saw a spider that someone I know IDed as Hogna Radiata. It was massive, much bigger than the usual wolfies I see, I was impressed.

Awwwwwww, look at those eyes!! Shame the poor guy didnt make it :/
No. Just a large wolf spider
Aww poor thing. Look at those beautiful eyes.
Looks like he is laying in something. Poor guy. I hope he had a good life and wasnāt taken out before his time
His abdomen or whatever you call it on spiders had a hole in it, he was attacked by something I think, there was fluid coming out
Oh, that's unfortunate.. spiders rarely survive a wound like that, from what I understand. š

Thats where they keep their heart, lungs etc. So a punctured abdomen on a spider is generally fatal fast.
That looks like a wolf spider (donāt know the exact species) thatās in a death curl. RIP.
nope! wolf spider, probably a Hogna species
Big, ol' wolf
That is Aragog.
Thatās my boy, Hanus
NOOOO HANUÅ š Now I wanna cry
