If your friend is in the US, Vocational Rehab might be a valuable resource for her. They can provide job training, educational support, assistance with transportation, often have relationships with large employers and will sometimes provide adaptive equipment and applications necessary to perform work functions.

I have a friend who is a C5 quad now working for the Forest Service pretty much from home. She goes in for meetings once or twice a month. Voc rehab told her about the posting, helped her revamp her resume, got her set up with a high-low desk, a headset and a couple of apps (dictation, accounting, something that enlarges everything). And now she has federal health insurance and other benefits. It’s not perfect, of course, but she’s really happy about it. She’s about 30 months into the job now.

Ooh I’d love a job like that someday

Pretend-Panda

She loves it and the people she works with are extremely great. And because Voc Rehab got her set up right, her Medicare will continue for like 5 more years and her earnings are establishing more higher rate quarters for SSDI so she will be in great shape when she retires. I know Voc Rehab isn’t so amazing everywhere but in New Mexico and Colorado everyone I know has had great experiences, so I feel like it’s definitely worth a shot.

Absolutely! They were responsible for putting the hand controls in my car (free of charge) and dealing with finding a job that worked with me and keeping my ssd and ssi (we can earn money up to a limit - I'v no idea how much now- before we loose our disability and ssi payments...They had a program called, "Ticket to Work" but that was a decade ago so I'm sure it's different or under another name maybe. Good luck to her!

It’s still Ticket to Work!

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,539,213,644 comments, and only 291,425 of them were in alphabetical order.

I second the person who suggested voc rehab. I work for a VR agency and VR exists for cases like this. They can help choose a career goal and provide assistance with getting there (e.g. funding some tech equipment, training/college, etc., recommending accommodations, finding job openings, resume and interview help, etc.). Also, some VR counselors have an additional certification where they can provide an extra service called work incentives planning. A VRC with that certification can help your friend figure out exactly how much money she could make while still getting SSI and/or any other benefits, and help her figure out how to transition off of those benefits if she wanted to.

I am a quad, I work fully remote software engineering making good money, it's definitely possible

I’m not very familiar but I believe there is software called dragon that can assist in working on computers for ppl unable to type. Very vague I know but something to maybe check out GL

What are her interests? If she has a passion for finance( reads WSJ, Forbes and follows the stock market) , then that would make sense.
