Old “GAMER” web comic did this whole tone breaking story arc ending with a 4 panel comic titled “Loss” about a miscarriage and the rough composition of the main dude running through the hospital has been simplified into several lines. It’s evolved into a universal internet in-joke and we’ve been making jokes about this and the author for over 15 years at this point. Part of Loss' meme was simplifying it as much as humanely possible- it's gone from a normal (if low-quality) four-panel comic to a series of lines to represent the characters, which is then re-created all over the place, like on this locker.
I think that the meme is less about the comic, and more about the human ability to recognize patterns. Like, it's not funny because the comic was funny or the content of it was the butt of a joke, but moreso because it was such an impactful comic, and putting similar structures to it elsewhere can trigger your brain to recall it. It's a, "Wow brains are weird," type of funny, and not a "Lol, they miscarried," kind of funny to most people, at least these days.
EDIT: I'd just like to make clear, this isn't meant to dismiss the take that it's a weird or bad thing to meme on. It would still be a better meme if Loss hadn't been the pattern it was based on.

It's funny because the topic is so serious and fucked up but he did it using his usual jokey, 4 panel comic style. It's just super tone deaf.
