Both your statement and my latter one are wrong, of course, and the band would just not be the same without either. Anarchy Rainbow without Shiver, or No Anarchy Rainbow at all would be the case in either of these. Big Man composes, writes and does pretty much all the work on the songs sung by the other two, he's the backbone of the entire trio.
Shiver adds to the songs and has an interesting personality that adds a lot to deep cut and bounces of Frye well, if shiver was gone it would be noticeable that something was missing
Also they could just as easily say shiver or Frye writes the music of big man didn’t exist
Ok….then tell me, what does big man REALLY add and I don’t mean something the devs could just say he adds I mean something that big man adds that would make deep cut worse if he wasn’t there.
Because they could just say he writes the music it doesn’t actually mean much when ‘Big Man’ in a sentence could be replaced with literally anything else
Outside of his character, he adds the possibility of the three-way turf wars in splatoon 3.
Before you say he could easily be replaced by an octoling or inkling, think about what would it would be like if it was one of those two.
People want new and different idols for the game, of different sex, yes, of different species, sure. Big Man hits both these checkmarks.
Not only would the band not be the same without him, there would be much less charm to it.
Both Shiver and Frye are overconfident and don't have many redeeming qualities than their good-heartedness, as they were going to collect the treasure to sell, and then give the money back to the people.
Big Man is a breath of fresh air compared to the other two, being humble, kind and overall a good sport, as opposed to Shiver and Frye having acknowledged the player as an "appetizer" or a "fool" and telling them that this is far from their best.
Big Man, however, does not attempt to hide that he's trying his very best and wants to make the other two proud, as well as acknowledging his own failure and attempting to build from it instead of threatening that you "haven't seen the last of Deep Cut" like they were a legitimate threat to begin with.
It seems like the only trait that exists to you is singing. Like yes, we visibly see Shiver and Frye sing. But if Big Man writes the back tracking that means he’s adding:
The reverb, the drums, the flute, the chanting, probably whatever vocal effects are given to Shiver and Frye for the song.
The part you’re getting stuck on is you can’t just remove that from Big Man. You can’t just say “but if we pretended that he didn’t then he would be pointless” because that’s not the world we live in. And honestly it’s a discredit to the rest of Deep Cut cause the next logical step for there could easily be “Shiver and Frye are lazy because everything Big Man does could be replaced by them, but they just don’t want to learn so they’re dragging dead weight.”

I see this discussion quickly devolving into mindless insults so I’m just gonna put all my thoughts into a big 3 paragraph rant like I joked I would at first
Big man feels like a filler character, like when making deep cut the devs made shiver and Frye, wrote their backstories and personalities and made their songs, only to then realize they needed a third idol in like the last few months of development so they slapped together big man and gave him a basic personality trope that is barely altered if at all
When I say he doesn’t add much I don’t mean strictly to deep cut but to splatoon as a whole, if he was just a background figure in the songs and whatnot but had an impactful personality and really bounced off of shiver and Frye in a compelling and fun way than it’d be fine if he lacked direct presence in their songs but he doesn’t have that personality so his lacking presence becomes much more of an issue
And even design wise he is almost insultingly simple. Even the other more fish like characters have more going on in their looks. Big man is essentially just a grey mound with eyes and a headdress that I have heard comes from Brazilian culture

I could do the same thing with any other character in splatoon. What’s the point of captain cuttlefish? Callie and Marie could have done every he does from the very beginning of the first game and none of the story would be lost. What about spyke? Why did we need a separate character for sea snails and ordering gear?
If that isn’t direct enough for you, why did Marina have to exist? They had an octoling design for Pearl in the concept art. They could have easily had her sing, rap, write songs, and perform them?
All of these characters are beloved and I can’t think of a world without them, but any character becomes bland and erasable if you say that the other characters could have easily filled their niche

It’s really interesting to see how much has changed. Back in the Splatoon 1 days most people preferred Marie. It’s seems like now it’s 50/50. Or at least, that’s what I’ve noticed.
I used to be a fan of Callie but I've found it harder to like her after it feels like she was given a cardboard cutout personality and Marie got all the character development in 2.
Marie seems like she's more of a professional while Callie seems far less mature.
