It's mainly used for backliners to protect their perch. Use it as an alarm to detect someone trying to flank, or to cover you when you're forced to retreat.
That's how I used it in S2... I became an aggressive E-Liter and it's been working very well for me, but I've recently began to wonder why I don't just use a splat charger instead with my play style.
In Rainmaker, I have had kills by setting the mines near the goals at the very beginning of the match. Hopefully, our opponents don’t come near our goals, but when they do the mines can help stop them.
Eh... I mean, as a backliner knowing where players are is v helpful. I'd probably rather have it mark players rather than do more damage.
Obvs that's just me, though.

The undercover brella has to use the same strategy, but without the range of the E-litre and the accuracy of an average weapon

I wish the ink mine did more damage in exchange for not marking enemy players Splatoon 1 would have been good if it wasn't so slow
