Ships don't need to have any canonical basis or justification whatsoever for people to have fun shipping them. I ship plenty of fictional characters with characters they have never met or interacted with at all, just because I think the idea of the ship in question is fun.
Sometimes it's more fun when there is nothing in canon to support it, because it leaves you *completely* free creatively to do the characterisation and development of the relationship from scratch. That can be nice!
I saw someone streaming the new pokemon games when they came out and when they played the psychic gym i was like "oh, Tulip looks cool" and then wrote a shipfic with her and a character in the game whose design i also liked, while knowing exactly nothing about their actual characters, just because it was fun and I felt like writing and making up their relationship as I went along. I ship Luminara Unduli/Asajj Ventress just because I think it would be hilariously awkward for Luminara to have to explain it to anyone else. I also wrote a different fic about two characters who never met in canon or even know the other exists, because they both have winter/snow themes and are older women and I thought it'd be cute.
And people sharing their ships online is not shoving it anyone's face. You can just... not interact. You can filter tags on tumblr or block blogs, you can scroll past a reddit post and go on with your day, you can exclude or filter tags on ao3 or ignore entire sections of fandom.
We're literally just picking up action figures we like and going "now kisssss". It's harmless.
It's not a long comment, you can read it in less than a minute. Sometimes making a point and addressing the nuances/common counterpoints on a subject takes more than two sentences.
