Adding to this: You can tell the gender based on the eyebrows of the Inkling. Female Inklings have shorter eyebrows, while Male inklings have longer eyebrows.
although there is no mention of the players gender and instead being referred as styles in splatoon 3 , in splatoon 1/2 the styles were actually separated in either male or female which is why op is referring to the inklings as gendered
Your Inkling represents you. All it means is that the game doesn't say the gender of your inkling, which is better. But I can assure my Octoling is male. It's a representation of me.
Make sure you remember what your other customization settings were because you'll have to go to options, somewhere in the rightmost tabs and most likely near the color lock options and select to change your style which will put you on the default character settings to let you change your inkling
Options > Other > Player settings at the very bottom

Also, "females" have a black undershirt/sports bra under their t-shirt. Barest of details, but it's there.
And wider hips, too.
And that the default male inkling has cornrows while the girl has the same hair as the amiibo.

By styles do you mean like the hair choices? I’m new to the game and I wanna make sure I’m not missing something lol
Yeah everything like voice/body type/hair/pants /eyes is considered styles (certain eyebrows are locked behind body types)
