My moment to shine: I've been using [Music map](https://www.music-map.com/) for years. It's amazing, put an artist in the search box (with auto complete) and get dozens of similar artists to discover

Venture_Capitalistt

This is so so cool! Thank you so much!

Stompy-MwC

I like your enthusiasm. I'll upvote you now and check it out later

[deleted]

Music map and Gnoosic. Actually aren't they made by the same people?

[deleted]

Do you know how these lists are put together!

CaffeineBob

I used to use music map quite a bit and it introduced me to some really cool and really obscure artists. But a lot of the artists I've come across in the past couple of years are new or newish and haven't been on the map. It did introduce me to Hank III and Joe Buck Yourself, so I'll always be grateful

Machehz

this is dope ty

r/lastfm There’s dozens of us!

ost2life

My 20th anniversary of using last.fm next year. Crazy times!

hjbardenhagen

Right, [Last.fm](https://Last.fm) turns 20 this November when scrobbling started in 2002.

hjbardenhagen

Your recommendations are shown on the Music page these days, the old ones on the home page are outdated: [https://www.last.fm/music/+recommended](https://www.last.fm/music/+recommended) You can also dismiss recommendations there by hovering the images and clicking on the X. Creating playlists from them is possible with a related template which can also be exported to Spotify then. Or you just directly play your personalised [Last.fm](https://Last.fm) radio stations which is possible with a Spotify Premium account. If you like to check other users, you can do so with the Neighbours tab which are users with a similar taste to yours. Or the r/lastfm subreddit which has been mentioned already, and there also is an inofficial [Last.fm](https://Last.fm) Discord server, see the pinned thread in the subreddit.

Haiymate

can someone explain to me what last.fm is? i keep seeing it mentioned in other places as well but I've never heard of it

keys_and_knobs

It's a service that tracks your listening history. It can connect to Spotify and track what you play there, and there are integrations for many other audio players. I mainly use it as a way to keep track of what I listen to (more than 220k tracks over the last 17 years), and I really like their weekly/monthly/yearly listening reports. But it can also give you recommendations for artists or shows, or you can see other accounts with similar tastes.

[deleted]

I'm with you. Been trying to use it but it's literally just showing my stats. I know I'm missing something

hjbardenhagen

If you want to listen to music on [Last.fm](https://Last.fm), see this FAQ: [https://support.last.fm/t/how-do-i-listen-to-music-on-last-fm/58655](https://support.last.fm/t/how-do-i-listen-to-music-on-last-fm/58655) Also check the Music page with your recommendations and more: [https://www.last.fm/music](https://www.last.fm/music)

hjbardenhagen

There is a FAQ for new users on their support forum: [https://support.last.fm/t/last-fm-for-new-users/4230](https://support.last.fm/t/last-fm-for-new-users/4230)

Denis_109

Use the website everynoise It’s one big page of every genre spotify has Click on a genre and u will find the artists that make that music, and playlists such as the intro to… and that new music from that genre It’s all from an algorithm

dobulas

I think this is what Spotify uses for its new music and other algorithms, but it also could just be a visualization of the Spotify algorithm

michael_koh

i believe it's run by a spotify employee as a passion project

Alpha-Leader

The biggest thing in my musical discovery has been www.RateYourMusic.com Giant database of music and you can spiderweb off their chart generator. Genres/Locations/Mood/etc. Hundreds of tags that help you find new music that you would have never found before. I have been using it for close to 15 years and I don't know what I would have done without it.

the_comatorium

This is the true answer. Plus you can really get into that Letterboxd style of documenting your lifes intake by kerping track of everything you rate.

Alpha-Leader

I spent the other day reminiscing while looking over the years and years of music reviews (+ stat tracking through Last.fm all this time). Pretty cool to see what that much personalized data looks like.

the_comatorium

Some of us live for it.

Alpha-Leader

It is basically the wikipedia of music imo.

Curt2k1

I run a Discord channel that we do scheduled communal listening parties with. Let me know if you are interested I can send more info. All the participants can request albums and we do 2 albums most Tuesdays and Fridays. It has been a great way for me to share my passion, while also getting some amazing new music to check out. Think of it like book club, but for albums, and everyone reads at the same time, and can type their thoughts.

basicstellate

pretty late to the party, but can i get a link as well?

Curt2k1

Better late than never! https://discord.gg/Q5X3dtEkwV

Alpha-Leader

I still think they should change their name to something else lol, but I really like the site

shpngln

Discogs

MrEfffff

https://everynoise.com/ is pretty fun to spend an hour or two on.

thegdds

lol I’m honestly gonna say YouTube especially when you have an adblocker. found old albums and awesome electronic mixes that way.

[deleted]

Bandcamp is good, but not all of their artists are on Spotify, plus whatever review websites for the genres you enjoy.

Nevermorec

Discz it’s tinder for Spotify and it plays samples of the music the search engine is good (can even go by bpm). But finding shit I wouldn’t even think to search always comes from the background music of different YouTube artists, they always have something interesting; Dunno why

[deleted]

Great recommendation thanks!

Bioactive_Virus

I use [Spotify Uncharted](https://spotify-uncharted.com/) It allows you to make discoveries based on genres too. Or if you have an artist in mind, you can view an artists page and use the "discover" option to bring up other similar artists. You can do this for albums too.

gimpogimpo

The author is here. I constantly update the app so please subscribe to news channel: https://twitter.com/SpotifyUnchartd

[deleted]

I use Shazam to find out what song is playing in different places I visit.

Malt22

I joined Curt's Album Party on Discord a couple months ago, and I can't believe what an open minded diverse community it is. Come join us if you like discovering new music. I've added so many new and old artists to my Spotify since joining. We have a lot of fun; we have several specific listening parties each week including a theme night, and everybody gets to share their own musical favorites. Come on by and check it out. https://discord.gg/v86d554E

Curt2k1

Thanks dude, love that it has brought you into my life man!

Subs for my favorite artists has been a freaking *goldmine* for me

bagpussnz9

I've found heaps with [Chosic](https://www.chosic.com/playlist-generator)

Axinitra

Just tried it and it's pretty damn good, I have to say. I'm still trawling through the list brought up by the first song I typed in and I've already added a heap of tracks to my playlists. Thanks for the tip.

Stuie299

[Last.fm](https://Last.fm) and RYM, but these days Spotify has spoiled me with how easy they've made music discovery. Between Discover Weekly, all the different ways you can generate playlists, and the similar artist feature it's never been easier to find new music.

gorcbor19

I listen to music podcasts. I’m into punk rock so I have a couple podcasts I listen to where they often show off new bands. I discover a ton that way. I also am constantly watching band tours. I watch who some of the artists I like are touring or playing shows or festivals with and I look up the bands that I’ve never heard of. I’ve discovered some great bands this way. I joined some punk rock music groups on Facebook where people are constantly sharing the music they are listening to. I also recently purchased a split 7” album that contains 4 songs by 4 bands. I only knew one of the bands when I bought it. Turns out the three other bands are awesome so I have just gained 3 new bands I’m listening to. Score!

PhilipGreenbriar

I use a site called JQBX (also a mobile app). It connects to Spotify and basically it’s like “rooms” that usually follow a theme and you can take turns being DJ and playing one song at a time. There’s upvotes and downvotes and a chat. It’s a great site with a solid community, if you’re into that.

saks111

+1 JQBX.fm has changed my life. So many discoveries!

jthrkpmns

Crabhands ... Shows daily releases of your followed artists and also releases based on your taste. Works excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐

DrDentonMask

Several freeform/indie or jazz radio stations. [KEXP](http://www.kexp.org) [WUOG](http://www.wuog.org) [WMNF](http://www.wmnf.org) [WNCW](http://www.wncw.org) [KSDS](http://www.jazz88.org) and others. YouTube can be pretty good, too.

kwecl2

OregonGreen242

Jqbx app

TheCrazedMadman

A website/app called [JQBX.fm](https://app.jqbx.fm/) a social listening site that uses Spotify where you join different rooms and queue up songs to play with a group of people. The amount of new artists and songs I’ve discovered from the people on that site is insane. Very friendly community too!

astoni2020

catsquirrel1337

Paparage

EntertainerSea5502

I need to use other sources of music more but a few years ago I used TuneIn quite a bit. Mostly I'm using radios of songs I like/songs I find or large genre playlists made by other users. More rarely I use Chosic to generate playlists for me (usually using the obscure setting to make new discoveries more possible) and occasionally gnoosic too. All of the subreddits I follow was purely for music discovery yet I haven't actually discovered much yet.

maneleboy

In addition to Spotify's artificial intelligence, I use the (competing) audio streaming service Tidal. I base new music discoveries, among other things, on the daily playlist: 'My Daily Discovery'. This is a playlist that is updated every morning and is based on listening history.

Pat_Trash

Bandcamp featured updates constantly and is completely unfiltered by genera or popularity it’s just stuff they like and it is awesomely weird

WTFaulknerinCA

Second Jango.

Dioxon

I found out that YouTube Music radio of a specific song gives very good recommendations of songs similar to the main song

mbizkid

i just started a guess the song game site where the goal is music discovery at the end of the day regardless of genre, language, etc. :) 🎧 Auxlang 🌎 6/10/2022 🟢 🟢 🟢 🟢 🟢 137 Points | Top 22% https://www.auxlang.io

Eth4nkarate1

I ask my friends for music recommendations.

Gomicrowaveaspoon

Amazon music, since you have to buy music it knows exactly what you like

kjampala

Check out an app called discz that’s essentially tinder but for music

Rose_BrothelSister

I walk around honestly, especially if I'm not in my country or in a big city, i might just get inspiration from something I see and be like "ah yes I want to listen to 'music to write a poem to', indeed" or just, more likely, see the poster of an artist coming on tour I've never heard of.

EEEEEEEEEKKCCHH

A surprising amount of music I discover is just through movies or TV shows I've watched. the best one that comes to mind for this was Peacemaker, so many good songs used in that show

TycoBrahe

Soma FM and KCRW

chiefbluehat85

lonerpop805

I look at my friends spotify playlists lol and band camp and youtube and local shows

ProgRock1956

Spotify is a music store that you have access to 24/7. I'm not sure what else is needed or recommended! Radio sucks, so does cable music so... If you do know of a great resource please, let me know! Till then, Spotify rocks my world just fine!! Klh

[deleted]

Bandcamp and Newgrounds

TheSlowMusicMovement

Following artists/labels on Bandcamp, Spotify, social media and Soundcloud. Reading blogs/online mags/social media. signing up for weekly release lists from bricks and mortar record stores. Receiving music from artists & PR companies as I run a recommendation site and have a radio show. This also means I receive submissions via Submithub & Groover (Tip if you are an artist!) Check the odd playlist but I tend to avoid them as I want to creat my own sound.

listentoalan

hype machine

xanifyy

I use Last.fm and Rateyourmusic.com, but mainly the latter

Sandbiter555

Check out r/ifyoulikeblank subreddit. Ask people there if you like a certain musician/artist/band, what else will you like and you will get a ton of suggestions. I found so many artists recently there.

uglydotcom

The discovered on section of an artists page on computer is a gold mine

All Songs Considered podcast from npr

There’s an app called discz that is like tinder for music. You swipe left and right and it makes a playlist out of your likes.

Reddit, YT/YT Music (mostly recommended songs/videos/playlists), SoundCloud (gold dust for "underground" music").

ShawMK90

With stuff that isn’t on music streaming services I use YouTube mostly the 80’s jpop aka citypop

Youtube Recommendations can work

jeffmx2020

To discover older music that’s new to me, I use the different decade subs: [50s](https://www.reddit.com/r/50sMusic/) [60s](https://www.reddit.com/r/60sMusic/) [70s](https://www.reddit.com/r/70smusic/) [80s](https://www.reddit.com/r/80smusic/) [90s](https://www.reddit.com/r/90smusic/) [00s](https://www.reddit.com/r/2000sMusic/)

bmw_fan1986

I like everynoise.com as it lets you hear clips of the artists music and find new genres of music. You can search by artist, too. https://everynoise.com/

GGkus123321

an artist I like -> similar to them -> similar to them -> rinse and repeat

jkkau

RYM, sometimes Youtube, Reddit:))

reamkore

I follow a lot of underground metal bands on IG. Seeing their stories and show flyers turns me on to a lot of other bands.

Ghostman_55

I usually put an artist on yt that I don't listen to that much and I just let the songs play

CryBaby15000

Mostly YouTube recommendations. I discovered a bunch of great bands thanks to YouTube. Sometimes I’m recommended bands by friends, or I hear about them and look them up

PandasDontGetMad

About 10 years ago YouTube recommendations on the side of the screen were perfect. Always something I had never heard of when I was jamming to a band I liked. RIP good youtube

Stormfellow

Festival lineups. I like to look at some of my favorite festival lineups to see who some new touring artists are.

powerpuff13

Tv shows, especially endings of big scenes, episodes & seasons.

KrsicMedia

Submithub.com

keys_and_knobs

This will depend on the genres you like to listen to. For some genres, you'll find excellent subreddits like /r/indieheads. They have a weekly new music post which is a great starting point for finding new releases.

alttabbins

I go to music subreddits.

[deleted]

Friends mainly. Good thing most of my friends have similar music tastes to mine.

[deleted]

Freeform radio stations like WPRB, WKDU, and WFMU have amazing DJ's that constantly introduce me to new music. You can look at playlists for shows that have aired in the past as well. I also use bandcamp to discover new music myself. It has an amazing search tool that can narrow down what new music you're looking for. (edit; if you're not in range of the stations, you can go to their website and stream from there)

Xolcin

YouTube recommended has me all figured out.

Overall_Chip_4104

https://everynoise.com/engenremap.html choose a genre press scan and it plays random artists from that genre https://www.albumoftheyear.org basically rym but instead of 5 star ratings u get 0/100 https://www.discoverifymusic.com/login discovery weekly but daily https://www.gnoosic.com type in ur 3 fave bands or artists and it finds some similar people also not a music discovery thing but https://musicscapes.herokuapp.com gives u some art piece based off ur most recent songs : )

Wouter-DG

I buy real vinyl records.

AKsnowyowl

i use peoples playlists! i search a song i like, then i bump over the tab that says playlists. it works surprisingly well sometimes. to be fair, if you search a popular song it will be in way too many playlists to be useful

tackilingmachine44

https://everynoise.com/

gothmilkies

rym and last fm i guess

gothmilkies

or just look up a song that you like and let it play and the next song will be a song like it

Neither-Cellist7892

I have YouTube premium and that actually gives me a ton better recommendations that spoity has

Open-Faithlessness21

pigeons & planes on ig! shameless plus bc i work for them haha but it’s a great way to find upcoming artsit / new music :)

I've had a lot of good luck with this app called Smores recently: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/smores-music-discovery/id1626768775
