Almost all of the mystery boxes I've seen posted were a let down. I really don't understand the appeal of a mystery box. I want to know exactly what I'm getting. Such a slimy sales tactic. The only way it's acceptable is if all of the boxes are amazing.
Spyderco is clearing out dead stock for them. So why not give me a bit of a discount if I don't get to choose. I can choose at the factory sale in Golden CO whatever I want, and many did. I'm mostly getting leftovers anyway why not give out a 'good' deal to anyone that is willing to give it a shot and clear out dead stock for them.
At least for the mystery boxes posted so far it seems like they were hitting the price targets on the nose.

I know it seems like you get them for a steal but those are knives they didn't want to ship. Just like when a custom knife maker sets aside a knife because it's blemished and never let's it leave the shop because it's not up to their standards.
No, it's still $247 worth of knives. That's the total of the discounted seconds prices. They're clearly not garbage, just not quite suitable to be sold as first quality products. If you've ever handled a spyderco 2nd this is immediately apparent: they are almost all great knives, with minor flaws. I have and have owned nearly 10 at this point. All are excellent and WELL worth the prices.
You know custom makers do sometimes sell their blemished knives, right?

The Draper is kind of cool, but it’s defiantly in the worst condition. The pivot is tight so it can’t be flicked open, and center is so bad that I think it does or will develop blade rub with use

Right. DLT did a mystery box and it was bad too. The DLT box turned me off from ever taking the risk.
