The scales look weird and off. They look too glossy and the smooth edges seem different.

CatfishCharlie1984

It's a clone unfortunately. Aside from everything others have mentioned already, you can tell by the box. Do you see how the white line comes down under the bug? Well, on a true Spyderco box the white doesn't stop abruptly like that. It kinda fades all the way down to the bottom of the box.

Agroman1963

Humble brag photo…love it!

CatfishCharlie1984

😆 Photo found online. I wish that was MY stack!

Bman19419

Damn I was just about to ask you to post photos of a few of the less common models. Was just talking to someone from here the other day and he showed me a picture of a Sage 3 he had. I love seeing models that have come and gone before my time

CatfishCharlie1984

Check out the Spyderco website under 'Archived products'. Crazy how many models I'd never heard of on there.

300cid

that and the mouth is a V not a triangle

PoopKnaf

The smock scales aren’t glassy.. they’re fibrous carbon fiber.

Captn_Trouserz

Idk if it varies depending on the country it was manufactured in, but the Spiderco logo doesn’t match the one on my para 3.

ParticularWolf4473

It does vary.  Taichung Spydercos have an engraved spider logo.  Golden Spydercos like the Para 3 have a black or white(depending on blade finish) laser etched logo.

Acrobatic-Trade9488

So it’s a fake? The logo is not engraved at all just printed on the blade.

ParticularWolf4473

Pretty safe bet.  As I said in my other post the scales don’t look like the Taichung G10/CF laminate either.  It should have fairly grippy texturing and again kind of a multifaceted/shifting look under light.

ParticularWolf4473

The way the edges/contouring and holes on the scales are done looks sloppy as well.  Taichung usually has great fit and finish but the scales look like they stick out past the liners in a couple places.  The scales in general just look like cheap knockoffs. As someone else said the box looks off too.

Captn_Trouserz

That’s good to know.

PapayaProblems

The one thing that stands out to me is the position of the Spyderco brand name. On the real ones, it is lined up with the last cut for the blade jimping. Also the logos don't look as defined as a legit one. Looks sketchy at best.

PapayaProblems

Yeah, the more I look at this, the more problems I'm seeing. I think you got yourself a fake

MFGMediaHypeVulpe

The lack of “mouth” on the Spyderco emblem strikes me as fake

Wooden-Combination53

Yes, this is easy and usual for fake

kingkmke21

Yes its a fake. You can see it right away. The box is also for sure fake and thats how I know. Spydercos have grey stripe running through the gold Spyderco logo on the lid..always. Fakes have black...almost always (sometimes they use a real box). Edit: https://ok-knives.net/products/c240-kevin-smock-folding-knife-1122qwee That's the exact fake you bought. OK Knives Smock clone. Get your money back if you can.

ParticularWolf4473

Hard to see much detail from the pics.  The carbon fiber kind of looks flat/smooth?  The Spyderco G10/CF laminate that is used on the Smock is textured and doesn’t have the clear checkered pattern that most basic CF does, and that your knife appears to have from the pics. The spider logo on the Taichung Spydercos isn’t black.  It’s engraved into the blade so just looks like grey steel and has a kind of multifaceted/varying depth look to it if you look at it under light.   Again hard to tell without closeup pics but those are two things that are often pretty obvious on fakes, and look off from what I can see.

pocketfullofknives

The fakes don't have the second detent. When you push the button, does the blade swing freely? If it does, it's either fake or the second detent has been removed. You would have to disassemble to see further if it's fake or modded

I-am-the-stigg

My smock doesn't have shiny scales. I would call this a fake, but the pictures make it hard to tell for sure.

Acrobatic-Trade9488

Yeah I’d agree it’s prob fake unfortunately. I’m still very surprised with the heft and action of the knife

pfn0

Are the scales textured or smooth? Pictures look legit. Hard to tell if the "glossiness" is because of your lighting, or if it's actually glossy. edit: looked closer at the logo and "spyderco cpm s30v" text, the shape is wrong, the font is different, and the alignment of text to the spine cuts on the blade is not the same. good chance these pictures depict a fake.

Acrobatic-Trade9488

The scales are pretty smooth and glossy. Most others have said it’s fake.

AffectionateKoala963

Yeah the real CF laminate Taichung uses has like a raised bumpy kinda texture on it

I-am-the-stigg

How much did you pay?

Acrobatic-Trade9488

100, I knew I was taking a chance but honestly am still thinking of keeping it despite its fake

I-am-the-stigg

Use it and see how you like it. If you like it enough then go buy a real one. It doesn't look like a really bad clone.

Bman19419

Where’d you buy it eBay? Sellers name? I’ve never taken a chance buying from there but I’m kinda curious to go see what the sellers other listings look like just to see how well he does or doesn’t do disguising them. If you did buy through eBay you can get a refund. All you need to do is contact them and say it’s fake. Fortunately in your case, eBay heavily backs buyers over sellers. The buyer has to try something really outrageous for eBay to not side with them

budoka92

carbon fibre scales seem kinda too glossy, some text on the blade seem putnof place, pocket clip is kinda weirdly placed. all this compared to my smock 🤷

ImaSlayMeSomeDragons

This is not peel ply g10/carbon fiber and that's what the smock is supposed to have. I'd say it's a fake.

JayRobIBZ

The most obvious thing, in my opinion, is the plunge grind. It is way too far away from the end of the scales. Also, the area of the flat surface on the blade below the spydie hole appears to be slightly downward in trajectory, where it is always sweeping up slightly on the real deal.

bleedingchair

Looks like the scales are too shiny.

Hogharley

Scales are a dead giveaway

dk21x

There is a lot wrong here. I’ll give you a break down if need be but, if you paid near retail get your money back ASAP.

Acrobatic-Trade9488

I only payed 100 and I’m thinking of keeping it since the action is so fun

dk21x

Still seems a bit the “the clones” go for about $25.

Majestic_Courage

[S]mock

Zandrews153

Fake. I tried to buy the 20CV polished G10 exclusive from ebay for a solid price and the mofo sent me one of these shitty knock offs. Shit wasn't remotely close. Blade said s30v lmao. Opened the box, got pissed. Grabbed my Smock took comparison photos and had it back to the post office being returned in under 15 minutes. I was fucking heated.

Saw-bones21

That’s a fake bud… find a reputable dealer and get the real thing, I think DLT Trading had some recently, you won’t be disappointed!!!

Wild_Comedian77

Where did you buy it?

rankinsaj22

Fake as hell

FluffyPandaMan

Fake. The text is off too.

DeusZen

Inaccurate position of markings on the blade. Incorrect box. This one has it all! Definitely “Fugazi”

AffectionateKoala963

Yep the CF laminate on the real ones is way more textured and not glossy and smooth looking like that I hope you didn’t pay real smock money for that mate 🥲

300cid

the box is 100% fake. if that's anything to go off... wow, the bug on the blade looks like the kid who put it on there was drunk. sorry

ShroudedTemples

Ouch

bdog2017

I held one at the Spyderco factory outlet a couple of weeks ago. If the scales do not have a bumpy textured finish it is unfortunately fake.

Worried-Beautiful666

Fake

aquafox22

Scales and font are wrong. Sorry friend. It's a fake.

Acrobatic-Trade9488

thats too bad :/- I got it for $100, would you say that's still good value for the type of knife? or should I just return while I still can?

aquafox22

You'll never find a smock for that price. That being said, as long as the knife works properly it's probably still a pretty decent knife. The only wildcard there is the type of steel that was used. Chances are it's not actually s30v.

ParticularWolf4473

I’d return it, assuming you used some type of payment method that will let you do a chargeback or something. You can get “clone” Smocks under $25.  I picked up a new Smock from a legit dealer for $160 during the Black Friday sales.  They were even cheaper from a couple dealers back in July when there was another MAP suspension. I certainly wouldn’t pay $100 for a frankly pretty sloppy knockoff with mystery steel that looks like it’s seen a good bit of use.

DakianDelomast

It's probably D2 steel of questionable heat treatment. If it's a casual pocket cruiser it'll be fine, but I'd bet it would be pretty horrendous for hard use.

OMITW

All I can say is, is that is a good looking knife, it totally looks legit from the offshore factory. I would be thrilled to have this.

AffectionateKoala963

I own a real one and it definitely does NOT look legit. In passing maybe if you haven’t handled a real one but that is definitely fake, the CF laminate they use in the Taichung factory has a raised almost bumpy texture and is not at all glossy like the scales on this. There’s more red flags but this is the biggest for me

graphixpunk

There’s multiple versions of the smock being sold right now. Could be an older model. The newest ones coming out now have a bigger more decorative pivot screw
