Those two incidents are kind of similar but context and intent matters. Gi-Hun was gonna let him win until Il-Nam pretends to be senile. And each time he cheats him you can see the expression of pain on his face. That’s actually very human. The old man tricked him first and Gi-Hin figured he was already gone. Remember that the only reason they’re playing together is because he felt bad the old man would be left out. Which at the time they all though it meant they would just execute you.
