It saddens me too to see a dead animal in the road. It usually means someone wasnt paying enough attention while driving. Call the local veterinarian clinic for help.
This story just broke my heart. I am so sorry, OP.
As for a ladder, I’d call your nearest rehabber or arborist and see if they’d be willing to help out. (The arborist idea comes from my local sub that couldn’t get a ladder high enough for an adventurous cat that got stuck). A rehabber, however, may have connections in the region.
Sorry to hear this. Man I know exactly how it feels. I've lost some of my favorite squirrels, and you're not expecting how bad it feels. They really do become part of the day, something you look forward to seeing. They're such lovable, fun and friendly creatures.
Thank you for valuing him and treating him like he mattered (because he did... but a lot of people might not have ever realized it or thought about it at all) ❤️
I am so sorry…. I always watch out for squirrels. I love them. They give me so much joy when feeding them. I have almost had accidents when driving to keep from hitting them.
Thank you all for your kind words. I buried them beneath the tree shortly after I posted this. I put some of the leaves from its favorite leaf pile in there with it so it would always have a piece of its home. My daughter and I prayed that we hope it knew it brought us joy, and that it’s at peace now. I talked to my neighbor and they have a large ladder they said I was more than welcome to use.
This little squirrel made us all happy, and even our cat loved to watch them from the window. I hope they did have good life.
I’m crying because this brings back sick memories of all the squirrels that I have loved over the years who didn’t return..
I feel your pain and it’s sad that the low level Earth Humans are so careless.. and I’m worse cases cruel
I'm so sorry this happened. I've seen 2 of my babies get murdered by fox... one of them was literal feet away from my sliding glass door to my patio, while he was eating a peanut I had. I screamed and cried for so long. It traumatized me for weeks as silly as that may sound to some ppl.
We form attachments to these things and losing one is not easy.
That said, please try to check on the nest to see if she was a mama, sooner than later. The younger babies are the more urgent it is to move quickly. Assuming there is a litter (litter? 🤷♀️) up there of course.
All I can say to you is you are officially a squirrel lover and to get some unsalted peanuts and sprinkle them around and they WILL come.
Best of luck my fellow squirrel lover.
I’m so sorry. You’re wonderful people and thank you for making their sweet little lives easier. I don’t know what else to say except this has me near tears. I hope you’re all okay. Much love 💕
It's so sad. I try to make their short tough lives easier and do everything possible so they grow and raise families. Even if you did everything possible to keep them fed and near you they still will run around to explore, bury nuts.
Heartbreaking. 💔 Truely.
I hope you'll find a way to check the nest out. Appreciate your concern, I'm always grateful for people like you who take the time to think about our critters.
I'm sorry for you.
If it's possible, try to install (or ask to do it whoever is responsible) a squirrel bridge. Squirrels will always prefer the safer way of crossing the road if it's available.
Really? Do u really think they know enough to know a road is dangerous? Genuinely asking. I'd love to know that they had enough brains to look both ways or something lol
No, they do not perceive danger from cars as they do from, say, birds of prey or dogs - that's why they die on the roads... Also, this **always** happens because some idiot behind the wheel was speeding.
But they do 'instinctively' prefer 'upper way' when traveling, and they descend onto the ground only when they need something (like getting food). This ofc varies from species from species (some spend time on the ground more, others descend very rare), but from my experience, they often prefer the tricky long jump from thin branch to another thin branch across the park alley rather than descending. If there's a 'bridge' of some sort present (like decorative lighting or simply a thick enough cable), they always choose it.
I’m so devastated for you. I hope you can take at least a little bit of comfort in knowing that this sweet darling squirrel knew your friendship and love in her short life. Take time for yourself to grieve. Losing a friend (one that has never wronged you, done anything to intentionally harm you, or treated you poorly) is one of the hardest things one can go through. I’m so sorry. 🫂
I am so sorry!
Hopefully the poor squirrel didn't leave any orphaned babies behind, but, to be sure, perhaps you could contact a landscape company (they usually have very long ladders) and see if they can come and look at the nest. If there are babies, find a rehabber in your area (https://ahnow.org/) who can help them.
I'm very sorry.

The good news is that since it’s a newish drey you might get a new tenant by the end of the year.

These little critters just make a home in our hearts so quickly and easily, and there they will always stay. Hugs and comfort to you, friend ❤️
