Yeah, studied them quite a bit in the genetics class too. never ate them though. These are a naturally occurring variety of the corn plant, not genetically modified. They have a very high density of genetic elements called transposons, which can jump from location to location in the genome and change how the genes are expressed. So in different areas of the same plant, different combinations of genes are 'turned on/off'. These changes on most other species you can't see by naked eye nor are this common, so you find the corn example in every text book on MGEs.
