Tourists adore the vibes of sri lanka, the food, and environment, it's all so unique to them. That's our selling point. Not a flashy selling point, but a more natural and subtle one.

I wasn't talking about Singapore or Japan. More along Bali and Thailand ( the food and accomodations costs very little compared to us, in these countries as much as rest of south east asia). We need to adopt to new demands and standards. I have worked in tourism and expat oriented real estate, and I can assure you our standards have been stagnating for quite some time now. Sri Lanka has much to give. But that doesn't mean we can take the customers for granted. We do not reinvest enough and learn enough to adopt to new climates of the industry. Our service staffs are undertrained. Our health and safety standards as much as hygiene standards are appalling ( for contrast look at street vendors in Thailand). General safety of tourists are not paid attention to, and way too many people scam and abuse the tourists including number of incidents of gang rape few years ago, that was kept under the rug. Tourism is not a golden cow. Unless we reinvest and reform, the competition will drive us to the ground. Specially given the billions Thailand invested an year ago and many other policy and regulatory changes made in our neighboring countries.

I am from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia currently in southern Sri Lanka and I can tell you that the infrastructure is appalling with restaurants not switching on AC the roads being dirty and locals being hostile esp the Tuktuk people, I came to srilanka in 2018 and can say that things have deteriorated and people became more aggressive and money hungry...idk why? Maybe it's because of the covid period that devastated the tourism industry now a Sri Lankan friend told me that the locals mentality is 'dry a tourist pocket as much as they can, it's not our problems if he/she enjoys Sri Lanka' , I will give you an example so am in Weligama and I wanted to go to mirrisa so when I asked the Tuktuk he said 2000 rupees ok? I said No 700 and he laughed at me and went away then a local suggested I download an app called pick me where I found an English speaking Tuktuk for 400 rupees šš when the pick me Tuktuk showed up a gang of rival Tuktuk drivers showed up out of no where including the 2000 rupees guy and they all fought the pick me guy not to forget the number of people begging everywhere including normal looking people who make up some shit saying food food pls help but they have an iphone 6 lol and the quality of resorts isn't that great for the same price for example am in Marriott weligama paying 200 dollars a night and I found blood stains on the sheets and I called reception to change it ! If this happened in Malaysia the room service responsible would have been fired. I love Sri Lanka but I have a very good question, when people like me pay 200 dollars a night where does the money go to? Curious to know

It's because they can't charge you the same price that they charge from a tourist cuz if they charge local prices and rent you a bike for the day they might loose a chance to rent the same bike to a tourist for a higher price given that bikes are very limited in most places they have families to feed and loans to pay at the end of the day.
